While Cathy had recently joined the band in 1985 (and her drumming is an integral part of the sound, as founding member Steve Lucas reports: "Cathy's inspired groove set the tone"), much of the material for this second album had been forming and road tested on stages for 5 years, and you can hear that experience here in these songs, nearly a decade of loss and gains, cold floors and warm beers, torn clothes and broken bottles, madness and happiness, the songs often sounding like pushing off and trying to find a footing, stepping into shadows and gripping the chain links, hanging over the edge and staring down the abyss, embracing the darkness and making it your friend whether it likes it or not, and when it comes down to it, it's a load of fun, welcomes you to the house party (at your house no less) with huge rhythms punched home with horns and then turns out the lights and trashes the house as only this band can do (a little like how Killer opened in 1971 with the horn charts of “Under My Wheels,” and then…), and the idea of the record, as the title informs, was to bring the live experience of this band into your home. And they certainly pulled that off. Cathy's drumming not only set the tone for the songs, but also helps launch the album, the first side featuring so much focus on rhythm courtesy of Ian and Cathy, and that remains throughout, the rhythm lifting the songs and pushing them through, but Lucas' vocals and guitar rip into the songs and pull you in (what an insanely perfect trio), and by the time we arrive at "Degenerate Boy," the show has clearly taken on a life of its own, and the idea of bringing the live experience into your home has clearly been realized as Lucas seems to be rolling his shoulder around the mike stand, snaking up close, leaning off the stage and snarling in your face, pulling you in and pushing you away, Ian and Cathy booming the basement and Lucas upstairs ripping open the attic, the menace of his delivery just growing as the set progresses, the second side picking up right where "Degenerate Boy" left off, the ragged focus like a frayed noose around your neck as the music grabs you by the collarbone and pushes you to the floor. But while clearly exploring the darkness of loneliness and loss, it still sounds more like yanking the blankets from the windows and letting some beams dance across the floor, dropping the door and cleaning the cobwebs from the attic, prying open the chest and letting everything out, including that last junk. While fellow Green Noise record store clerk Joel Jett always tried to tell me how great this record was, I might've missed out, and that nearly scares me because I've been listening to this over and over these past few weeks, and it's an important part of me now and an essential part of the decade in Australia, just gets better with every listen, just fucking genius in my humble opinion.  X-Aspirations (1980) was truly one of punk's finest moments, so it was a hard act to follow, but to miss this second set is to miss an integral part of their offerings. Record includes photocopied insert with photos and testimony from Steve Lucas: "X birthed itself into the Australian music scene on the 23rd of October 1977...Ian Rilen and Ian Krahe with Steve Cafiero and Steve Lucas...recorded studio E.P. Hate City (AKA Home Is Where The Floor Is) in 1978. The band was really taking off when Ian Krahe died, tragically, of a heroin overdose after a gig at The Bondi Lifesaver… we found it impossible to replace Ian Krahe both emotionally and musically.  Some time in 1979, it was decided that I should take up the guitar...under the guidance of the legendary Lobby Loyde, recorded X-Aspirations in 3 and a half hours. The band continued sporadically, traveling between Sydney and Melbourne until 1983 when Steve Cafiero decided to focus on his family life. Cathy had only recently joined X when we were doing a gig at Chasers on Chapel Street, and as we were stumbling off the stage, were approached with undiluted enthusiasm, by a fellow called Jex (Olympic Sideburns)...and asked if we wanted to make a record...with Lobby Loyde once again at the helm...we were housed in the classic St Kilda pub gig, The Prince Of Wales. It was all very rock and roll. We pulled apart the beds, put the mattresses on the floor and moved in and reduced it to a slum.  As usual, everything was done off the cuff...one-take wonders that included false starts...The idea was to get a spontaneous performance and to keep it as live sounding as possible.  We recorded during the day and we’d go out and gigging until the wee hours...Most of the songs were regulars in X sets when Steve Caferio was still in the band. Cathy's inspired groove set the tone, and Ian and I followed suit..Songwriting was always very spontaneous...Lobby insisted on recording my vocals for "Degenerate" and "Moving On." He waited to catch them until X had done some really late-night gigs and then summoned me first thing in the morning. He’d make me sing and scream over and over again until my throat was completely shredded and I could taste blood. I couldn’t talk by the end of it. It hurt so much! To this day my throat tightens in sympathy when I hear those two songs. Because of that extremity, people initially assumed Ian sang "Dont Cry No Tears"...Ian did take the lead vocally in two of the songs...Ian had a totally different vocal delivery... I miss it.  It was a wonderful moment in time. X was a really tight unit. We were a tribe – a family. Rough, raw and unpolished performance was what we were all about. We wanted an album you could play at home that felt live. That’s why we called it At Home With You.
