Dead Moon were (and still are) an integral part so many things—always good things—and when I listen to them do covers, part of me sees them as back-street professors teaching us the lessons on the history of American music…likely often showing us the music they grew up with…music the world grew up with (and it wasn’t until I listened to The Rats that I caught some hints of a Buddy Holly influence…I have nothing but praise for Buddy Holly…over the decades, I’ve come to recognize the immense influence he had on music in the 1960s and over the decades that followed, with power pop, punk, new wave, folk rock, hillbilly rock, indie rock, grunge, indie pop…I can’t sing his praise’s enough, but when I think of some of the music that was twice removed from him, something was lost…the flame dimmed or even doused out…music three times removed from the foreword charging fiery and flame of Bo Diddley….fortunately in the 1960s we had bands like the Who and the Stooges to embrace that beat and turn the flame back up…Dead Moon taking that fire and blazing through the final decade of the 20th century and into the one where we reside today. Dead Moon gave us so much, the music of course, but also a reminder of how it’s done and what it’s all about.
