Razorcake #130, featuring Pódium, Marissa Paternoster (Screaming Females), Insect Surfers, and Patrick O’Neil.

when I was a kid, I used to get skateboarder magazine, something like that (before they rooked me and in the middle of my subscription changed the magazine to thrasher magazine...I was so ticked about that because it was somehow connecting skateboarding to music and clothes and junk, what the shit!?  I felt like killing them dead and socking them in the eye for doing that) but that skateboarder magazine, I'd rip into it in the yard and page through the whole thing at least once before even going inside and sitting down on the davenport with it (but not thrasher, that I sent back and told them to give me my money back)...and then in the early 1980s I'd get this photocopied magazine that the writers would sent me for free or 25 cents or donation, and it was like part two to my education about music (the first was listening to underground rock on WIDR and writing names on the wall of my bedroom and then trying to find the names at the record store, which usually I couldn't find, and sometimes I could but had learned I'd misspelled the name of the band...all these bands from Ohio, Boston, New York... who just made me so happy because they were so different and/or so cool) and the magazine (zine I'm sure) I got in the 1980s was a direct extension of that, and the descriptions and reviews were nonsensical or weird and seemed cryptic and helped show me that this underground rock thing had never stopped and it had kind of fused with punk rock it seemed and I thought that was so cool, like it had gone under all that new wave crap that was an candy-ass extension of the mid-70s underground rock, and it just made me so fucking happy to find that the underground was still there, and I knew somewhere out there, there were still weird people like me that not only didn't hate bands with names like Pere Ubu, but like me they fucking loved it, I almost cry now thinking about how that made me feel, and I was so poor by that time, a teenager single parent and that magazine meant so much to me and like skateboarder magazine just a few years earlier, I'd scour through that zine standing up in the yard before even making it to the house...and I just realized all that and remembered all that because I just did the same thing with Razorcake #130 with Podium on the cover, ripped open the envelope at the mailbox and then paged through it on the warm hood of my car on this cool evening of the last day of summer.  -- winch
