Pere Ubu's first self-released singles are an essential part of the story...any story about underground music of the universe, featuring Crocus Behemoth and Peter Laughner, housing cuts "30 Seconds Over Tokyo," "Final Solution,"...nearly deadpan while also completely impassioned menace, caged restraint gritting its teeth in the darkness at the back corner of the cell, rolling its shoulders and foaming at the mouth, gnawing through the rust on the iron bars..the punk animal before it was yoked to guidelines...maybe snatching up some chunks of flesh from the Stooges and Velvet Underground...maybe some morsels from folks like Syd Barrett, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, and/or Roky Erickson...probably not aware of Suicide, Talking Heads and Television in 1975 (but maybe some of those NYC bands became aware and influenced by this band)...Pere Ubu likely keenly aware of other Cleveland bands like Mirrors and Electric Eels (and maybe Sonic's Rendezvous Band from Michigan). Someone once cleverly said that when Rocket from the Tombs splintered into Dead Boys and Pere Ubu, the former declared fuck art let's rock, and the latter saying fuck rock, let's art, but these early singles by Pere Ubu seem as much about rock menace as art expression...showing where they were headed with their coming albums but also clearly an extension of RFTT...morphing into its own thing. -- winch
