Short songs jammed-packed with rust-belt racket and release...brown paper bag confessions lifted to the streetlight...inner city anthems to chase the priest from the confessional booth. Preacher gone to town. Sisters clutch their beads. Kick the asphalt-stained ice-pack from the fender, pass me a square and snap off the filter. The rust-bucket winter beater still kicks over. It sounds like BillMike crammed a lifetime of experiences into a pair of old tube socks and proceeds to hit you over the head with it. Cleveland, Ohio songwriter/multi-instrumentalist William H. Michael--also known as BillMike or WH Michael--returns with Jazz Destroyer, a raw and genre-blurring new album arriving via Big Neck Records, further cementing his place in the city's long tradition of fiercely independent music. A longtime fixture of the regional underground, Michael first made his mark through projects like Al & the Coholics, Forgotten Souls of Antiquity, and MK Ultras before branching into solo work that channels equal parts punk urgency and melodic introspection. His collaborative orbit has included connections to cult songwriter Bill Fox--a fellow Cleveland artist revered for his lo-fi brilliance and work with The Mice--highlighting Michael's roots in a lineage of idiosyncratic, homegrown songcraft. With Jazz Destroyer, he pushes that legacy forward, fusing jagged rock structures with experimental textures in a way that feels both confrontational and unmistakably rust belt in nature.
