"In 1954, she began her solo career in ranchera music with the recording of a single containing the ranchera songs "Puñalada trapera" by Tomás Méndez and "Maldición ranchera" by José Alfredo Jiménez . This record became her first hit and was the first she recorded for RCA Records Mexicana , with whom she was an exclusive artist for over a decade. She gained further fame when her music began to be played on Mexico's main radio station, XEW . That same year, she appeared in the film El charro inmortal (1954). A year later, in 1955, she ventured into voice acting , providing the singing voice for the Argentine-Mexican actress Rosita Quintana in the film A los cuatro vientos . The song that made Amalia famous was "Amarga Navidad" by José Alfredo Jiménez , which became the song with which many have identified her since she recorded it. Amalia later recalled that thanks to the great success of that performance, she finally achieved recognition as a singer: “Bitter Christmas” was a complete success. People would find me in the street and chase me down for an autograph; they wanted to touch me, to feel if I was really me. The key is that it’s a song that reaches the very depths of the soul; it touches the most intimate and profound fibers of the human being.  In 1958, she appeared in the films Fiesta en el corazón and Una cita de amor ; the latter was screened at the Berlin Film Festival that year. By 1959, she had landed her first leading role as an actress, starring in the production Yo... el aventurero (1959). In the 1960s, he continued to participate in film with movies such as Los laureles and ¿Dónde estás, corazón?, both from 1961. She was admired by the American actor Rock Hudson , whom she met personally in 1960, and who commented that for him there were only two musical performers, her and the French singer Édith Piaf.  On June 11, 2001, Mendoza died in Mexico City at the age of 77."
