If you're looking for an introduction to this Memphis artist, you can not go wrong here. Here we got JPK and the band in fine form, the music moving like a pendulum in a groove, relaxed yet always on cue, serious but fun, tight but shaking like hiphuggers on hips, slinking and shuffling between styles but sounding especially cohesive in the live setting, the Orbison influence becoming especially pronounced here, and maybe Albert King on that explosive version of "The Rhythm of the City," keeping the songs short and focused, but releasing the tension at the tailend of a few cuts, JPK and the band ready to get back to it after a long COVID quarantine, using horns and always a backbeat to punch it home, the whole history of Memphis showing in the songs but never sounding like a museum piece, exploring timeless themes but as the title suggests and title cuts clearly tells us, also coming from the world of today, "Some people say that some of us don't count / They wanna build a wall to keep us out...I don't want to live In a World Like That," JPK and the band really shining in the live setting, the music inviting like a dance partner stepping across the wooden floor, taking you by the hand, twirling you around and pulling you in. -- winch (green noise)
