while the albums were out at the time of the shows I witnessed, most dead moon songs I first learned from the stage rather than on record...but by 2004 I'd been witnessing their shows for years...and working at Green Noise a few years...and the songs on Dead Ahead were probably a mix—ones I'd heard both on record and at shows, and while I was witnessing Dead Moon on the stage when Destination X and Trash & Burn were released, I just didn't know much about their album output at that time, and Dead Ahead was probably the only new Dead Moon release I really witnessed hit the streets. while many threads hold the dead moon catalog together, the albums they offered like banner flags strung out along a taut rope, each flag with the moon shining against the coffin-black background, candles stuffed in whiskey bottles along the fence, dripping wax that runs together and cakes the railing...holding on can be a real bear…but each album houses its own sound, offers its own shades of gray and flame...perhaps none more than this final studio offering...it peers deeply into the eye sockets of the skull...grabs hold and bottles the years and decades, the late autumn wind that shakes the scarecrow on its stick...chews the tar of the asphalt...the leather cracked deeply...the mix of melancholy and determination so present that it reaches into your chest and yanks out your heart...but also grabs hold of your shoulders, holds you up...breathing secrets in your ear. — winch
