Kool and the Gang ‎– S/T [Kool-Aid Vinyl. Funk 1969] - LP

Regular price $ 26.00 $ 0.00

While this New Jersey outfit would hit it huge a decade after this album, they'd been a band since 1964, and this instrumental LP from 1969 or 1970 (probably recorded in the former, released in the latter) shows this horn-driven funk band in action, hitting it with both power and soul.  This is far from the sound that would show up in 1979.

"The 1970 debut album from Kool and the Gang scored a couple of hits with 'The Gangs Back Again' and the title cut, but more importantly, it heralded the arrival of what was to become a juggernaut on the R&B scene. This all-instrumental record is years away from the commercial successes of 'Jungle Boogie' and 'Celebration,' and a few light years away stylistically, too. But that unique mixture of jazz, funk, and R&B punctuated by those tremendous horn arrangements (and some great drum breaks) that characterizes Kool and the Gang at its best is here in full force. That's why original copies of this record go for a 'kool' sum. For its first U.S. vinyl reissue in decades, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this R&B masterpiece, we've pressed up 1250 copies in 'Kool-Aid' vinyl' a funk classic. R.I.P. AllMusic Review by JT Griffith

Kool & the Gang's funky debut was an unexpected hit, with a first single (self-titled) climbing both the pop and R&B charts. Subsequent singles -- "The Gang's Back Again," "Let the Music Take Your Mind," and "Funky Man," -- followed the first into the charts, and there were plenty of other standout tracks: "Raw Hamburger," "Chocolate Buttermilk," and "Kool's Back Again." Though barely over a half an hour long, Kool and the Gang is a blast of a record containing strong elements that would become the band's trademarks: smooth melodies, suave rhythms, and brassy horns. This is one of Kool & the Gang's jazzier albums and a strong debut worth checking out.
