I listen to so many records looking for the good ones to tell you about, and this sometimes causes me worry and wonder if someday that love thump in my heart will still always come when I discover one of these records that I can't wait to tell you about...but as long as bands like this London outfit keep making albums like this one, I've got nothing to worry about, this London outfit showing different moods and tempos but focusing on the two-stroke punk-rock pop explosives, kick starts and kicks you in the heart and never lets up, timeless tunes for the people of the world, the melancholy moods and the motorbike jump up and need to escape from isolation and find a hand to hold clearly coming from the 2020s, the contrasting emotions stirred together like oil and gas and the confidence and uneasiness that we all felt in adolescence and again last year...like so many kick records, scooping up the best of the past and cooking up something new, the ingredients appearing to come from 1963 to 1979, UK punk outfits that influenced other bands on the Dirtnap roster, the best of power pop of the 1970s, and clearly stretching that arm of influences all the way back to British Invasion bands like the Kinks, The Beatles, the Hollies, the Zombies, and the Small Faces. In the end, it's just another essential listen from the unstoppable Dirtnap Records. -- winch (green noise)
‘Punch Drunk’ is the second album from London-based trio More Kicks, on Dirtnap Records (USA) and Stardumb Records (EU). The band’s self-titled debut album was a concise and ragged lesson in pop songwriting dripping in melody, cynicism and energy. ‘Punch Drunk’ marks a new era for the band. Heavier, more expansive, more twists and turns. It veers from sparkling harmonies to fearsome riffing in the blink of eye, with never a second wasted. As with the first record, it was recorded live on to 2” tape. It’s bottled lightning and the sound of a band firing on all cylinders.James Sullivan (Sulli) – vox/guitar; Kris Hood – drums; Paolo Mantovani – bass/vox have cooked up a rare alchemy. T
A More Kicks song can touch on classic 60s garage, 70s NYC rock and roll, jagged 90s guitar pop – all wrapped in a razor sharp bundle. A glance backwards and a decisive step forwards.
“When the world collapsed in 2020, I realised more than ever how much I rely on music and More Kicks,” says Sulli. “This album became a total obsession and a lifeline. Stuck in one place, the songs all came from heartbreak, frustration, anger, hope. It feels like a unique set of circumstances that produced this record and I’m really proud of what we’ve done.”
