Glamour Machine, The – S/T [DETROIT 2023] - New LP
Green Noise is always proud to offer albums by members of the Green Noise community, this band featuring seasoned bassist Jason Bowes (Culture Bandits, Jeremy Porter & The Tucos, The Hoolapoppers, The Offramps), guitars and vocals of both Jonathan Epstein and Charlie McCutcheon (I-Crime, Rogue Satellites)...the band coming out of the Detroit rock n roll tradition that was so prevalent when I was growing up on the mitten in the 1970s...Michigan bands who focused on a continuation of the rock n roll sounds of the past...who weren't trying too hard to recreate the past but also didn't give two shits about popular fads in music--except of course the underground rock and glam rock of the era, which took a lot of cues from the Detroit practice of looking to the past (while ironically creating the future). This band includes keyboards (piano, organ and probably synthesizer), horns (trumpet and sax) and the Glamourettes (three female background singers), but keeps it simple and aimed on the songs, offering quite a bit of variety but focusing on the ballads and mid-tempos numbers that often seem mostly influenced by 1960 - 1980s...maybe the band themselves would call out influences from the 1980s and 1990s, but to me, the songs sound influenced by the more lowkey material of the following artists: English bands such as Mott the Hoople, David Bowie and T. Rex; Michigan outfits such as the band Detroit, Suzi Quatro, Alice Cooper, and The Rockets; and East Coast artists folks such as Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman. -- winch
