While they visit their punk pasts late in the set, this also seems a departure from their hardcore pasts (although I admitted know nothing about those pasts), mixing within songs and moving between cuts with rock-based soundscapes and songs that drive forward through the heavy melancholy with drumming and electric-guitar rhythms, recalling some of the so-called post punk and neo-psychedelic outfits of the 1980s, the ones that clearly had some connection with different years of the 1960s (surf, garage, freak out, psychedelic pop, acid rock), but also were clearly helping define some dominant elements of rock in the 1980s, offering pop songs wrapped in some more raw and menacing elements. Of course, people with a better knowledge of the shoegazing bands that grew out of all that in the last 30 years can likely make other comparisons. If you like those bands, you'll want to listen to all of this album. While the sounds throughout have plenty of commonalities to create an effective cohesiveness, this also winds through different moods and tempos like a drive down a road that moves along rivers and ridges, through cities at night, towns in the twilight. -- winch
