This year Matador’s Revisionist History series concludes with Bailter Space’s ‘Wammo’, now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Formed in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1987 as Nelsh Bailter Space, the band’s musical family tree touches on some of the nation’s most revered weirdo luminaries – including Flying Nun mainstays like the Skeptics, the Clean, and the Gordons.

Bailter Space (aka bailterspace) embraced chaos, but celebrated precision, finding melody amid networks of brooding noise and feedback. After relocating to New York City, the band – who by then included Alister Parker, John Halvorsen, and Brent McLachlan – arrived on Matador in in time for the US release of ‘Robot World’ (1993). ‘Wammo’ was the trio’s third and final full-length with the label (their fifth album overall) and was among its most tuneful efforts (relatively speaking!).

At the time, music scribes were a bit puzzled by the record’s “accessibility.” In the rear view, though, we can recognize ‘Wammo’ for the perfectly melancholy and drone-laced brain-zap that it is.

Flying Nun Records and Bailter Space are proud to announce the vinyl reissue of their 1995 album Wammo, out on translucent orange vinyl on 12th February 2021,.

Wammo’s original session reels were dug up, baked, transferred and remastered for a refreshed vinyl reissue — the first time back on vinyl in 25 years.
Noise rock band originally founded in 1986 in Christchurch, New Zealand by Hamish Kilgour and Alister Parker. The band started with the name 'Nelsh Bailter Space' but became 'Bailter Space' in early 1988.

Since 1987, Bailter Space have released some of the most compelling and innovative albums, EPs and singles of the late post-punk era. Revered as one of the loudest and most intense live bands of all-time, Bailter Space befittingly left behind their previous modus operandi of multi-layering and tracking, and instead recorded the takes live in studio; the result was Wammo, which was welcomed into our CD collections in 1995

released February 12, 2021
