Amram, David ‎– No More Walls – Used LP

Regular price $ 2.00 $ 0.00

sleeve and vinyl: VG (some wear, nothing extreme).

AllMusic Review by The "walls" referred to in this album's title are the artificial boundaries between jazz, classical and World Music. David Amram (heard here on piano, French horn, guitar, flutes and percussion) has long been a pioneer in crossing between genres. With altoist Jerry Dodgion, baritonist Pepper Adams, and an oversized rhythm section, plus an oud, viola, dumbeg and five percussionists (including Candido), Amram performs seven of his diverse compositions, two of which also have vocalists. Intriguing music.

Flying Fish revisits 1971 double album (originally released on RCA Red Seal), just releasing the last two sides without the classical focus on the first two sides, the title likely referring to the breaking down of walls between genres, here the influences are plentiful, African, middle eastern, Latin America, folk musicians such as Woody Guthrie and Dylan and the more innovative musicians of the previous decades, especially those who incorporated world influences--from Yusef Lateef in the 50s to fusion and ECM artists in the 1970s.  This is mostly instrumental but features two cuts with female vocalists,"Pull My Daisy" featuring words by Kerouac-Ginsberg and rather dated and annoying, but "São Paulo" featuring some haunting vocals.  This album likely contains some of Amram's more enjoyable material, his working with Mingus and Monk likely having a big influence on him.  Side One is pretty enjoyable throughout.
