Snappy Little Numbers
LIMITED EDITION OF 30. 25 sold in preorder. The remaining 5 exclusively for Green Noise customers. Limited edition 12" LPs on mixed color vinyl with a bonus silkscreened & hand numbered art print.
While Lawson doesn't really sound like any of the following (and others can likely find some more recent comparisons), he somewhat recalls artists such as Neil Young, Todd Rundgren, Ray Davies, Harry Nilsson, Jorma Kaukonen and Skip Spence who all had a folk and/or singer-songwriter quality to at least some of their material but also included sonic explosions and moved comfortably between tempos. Like those artists, melancholy runs through this set by Lawson, and the tension underneath rises with increased tempos and movement from intentional statements to abandonment, much of this coming from a folk tradition but the distinctive electric-guitar parts of the spontaneous combustion sounding like a fuzzy mix of freakout of the mid-60s, acid-rock of the late 60s and head rock of the early 70s. While this clearly comes from the innards of the artist and likely moves through the result of his own experiences and observations (and sounds a lot like that cloud-burst photo on the sleeve), this in many ways
harks back to a post-Dylan era 50 years ago. While Green Noise doesn't carry every release from Snappy Little Numbers that doesn't fit our punk focus, we were proud to offer this limited edition from this artist. -- winch (green noise records)
