Angel Olsen is a master in the art of surprise. A chameleon at heart, she’s presented album after album that has exceeded expectations and dodged typecasting. At one moment a sparse folk artist, at the next a garage rocker and then an alt-country gal and on and on it’s gone. Most record collectors scoff at compilations, but Phases makes complete sense with a songwriter like Olsen. If we’re getting a collection of unreleased songs that have been written over the last couple of years, we’re in for an eclectic treat. Instabuy for sure.
