all thoroughly enjoyable...modal, hard bop, groove soul jazz...everyone working hard to drive it along, run it down and punch it home...guitar and three horn players...opening with the title track and the marathon workout "Shaker Heights" (Amy) that nearly fills the rest of the side and closing with "Enojo" (Amy) which focuses on piano, horns and percussion and shows some heavy latin influences...the flip side starting with another take of the title track, leading to some variations and a more reflective closing, the one vocal cut featuring Eva Harris singing Percy Mayfield's 'Please Send Me Someone to Love" and ending the set with "Old Devil Moon," "a hang-loose devilish Latin-boppy" closer. Likely under-appreciated because of all the competition from this era, and maybe because it doesn't stick close enough to one genre, this one is waiting to be rediscovered. -- winch (green noise)
