While the band were writing the album they became fascinated by the Mars One program- a global project which aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars.Applicants are offered a one way ticket- never to see earth again. This fascinated Holly and David who drew parallels between this mission and their own isolation as a band.Continuing the heaviness of " This is Eggland" "I am Moron" brings more depth to their sound bringing with it a mix of heavy psych, pop and strangeness. Some songs flicker between an earthly realism and the otherworldly loneliness of a one way space mission. While in contrast, Insect Repellent launches a gonzo-style attack against the middle classes and Bearpit questions the essence of working class freedom. With no booking agent, manager, record label or publisher The Lovely Eggs are truly independent. And support for them is snowballing. They are selling out bigger and bigger venues and more eggheads are joining them in their crusade against bullshit. The Lovely Eggs say it how it is. They've never been afraid to swim against the current and now they've got an army of fans behind them.Don't miss out on the most collectible record of the year! What struck me about this was not the representation of death in a macabre/morbid way, but rather that very sense of ephemerality and impermanence. Reading an article about the history of ephemera in art led me to the concept of vanitas, and I wanted to find a way to pivot that in a more, well, hopeful direction. But these paintings force us to bear witness to the contrasts of life, death, and impermanence, and if 2020 has taught me about anything, it is this concept of “bearing witness” both on a personal and political level. This year has been an ongoing series of mental health highs and lows while just as an individual I try to reckon on a daily basis with the transformation, pain, growing awareness, and, hopefully, growing empathy we are experiencing. Everyone has encountered loss this year—many have suffered a great deal of loss—but no one who is at least conscious is immune to this time of change. And thus, as a psychiatrist friend put it, we must bear witness. Part of that bearing witness for me on a personal level has been trying to step away from my familiar sense of self—both the parts I might feel good about and definitely the parts I abhor or want to change. I came back to Nashville during the shutdown in March to be close to my parents. And in that space of isolation, I have been trying to get back to some of the sonic building blocks that made me want to start making music in the first place. Listening to a lot of old cassettes, slightly warped records, nature recordings, southern Protestant hymns of childhood, homemade music—sounds that sort of inhabit a kind of “smallness” and intimacy. Sounds that do, in fact, decay—the beautiful saturated analog reality that is alive around us. I spend a lot of evenings listening to AM radio as the static starts to give way to a swirl of radio stations from near and far. The sun retreats, the crickets and cicadas crescendo. When I was working with Kelly Reichardt on the score for her film First Cow, she challenged me to confront some of my own melodic and compositional tendencies towards, as she put it, sentimentality: “Don’t tell people how to feel with this. Be open to the moment.” I feel like the way Kelly incorporates sound into her films makes her as much a sound artist as a master filmmaker; every sonic decision in her films is deliberate—radio broadcasts, passing noises, hushed dialogue, etc. With these new songs, I really just wanted to create a sort of mood board for where my head and soul have been at the last few months. Part of ephemera to me is in what Kelly told me: “Be open to the moment” because the moment changes. The sound dissolves into another sound, the image into another image. Time passing, transience, change. Although “static” means lacking movement, static sonically is almost the literal opposite: it is transience, noise, change."

—William Tyler

Recorded and produced by William Tyler except “Four Corners” by Scott Hirsch
Mixed and mastered by Loney Hutchins
Synthesizer on “Pisces Backroads” by Scott Hirsch
All music © 2020 William Tyler / Spooky Buffalo Music (ASCAP)

Noctorum is a collaboration between former Church guitarist Marty Willson-Piper and producer/engineer Dare Mason.

Debuting in the early 2000s, the project has resulted in several expansive baroque pop and space rock albums. The duo grew up together in the borough of Wirral, near Liverpool, and long shared a love of '60s psych-rock, '70s glam rock, space rock, and sundry other experimental pop genres. Originally a trio comprising John Mulligan (bass), Dix (drums) and Luke (guitar), Fashion issued three diverse singles on their own label, spurred on by the do-it-yourself attitudes in the wake of punk. After November 1978’s ‘Steady Eddie Steady’ came ‘Citinite’ in June and then Perfect Product, an impressive debut album. ‘Silver Blades’ followed in March 1980, ensuring a contract with Arista Records. Now swelled to a six-piece with Martin Stoker (ex-Dance; Bureau) on drums, vocalist Tony (ex-Neon Hearts) and main songwriter De Harriss, many predicted that their resultant singles would break the band on the back of the futurist scene of the early 80s. ‘Street Player - Mechanik’ in March 1982, ‘Love Shadow’ in August and later, ‘Eye Talk’ in January 1984, all scraped the lower reaches of the chart, but failed to establish the band in the public eye. Despite this, Fashion enjoyed a strong undercurrent of support, reflected in a UK Top 10 album, Fabrique, in June 1982. However, interest gradually waned, the band moved to Epic, and Twilight Of The Idols, issued exactly two years later, was not as warmly received."

"Product Perfect. Fashion's seminal album. A raw punk-ska-dub rhythm section meets Tubeway Army played at half speed. The bass and synths are DaDa. The drumming is tribal. The guitar delivers angst in spite of its reggae influences. Their nonsensical arrangements could only make sense within the dark green, dank, and sordid mixture of these things. You need to hear the vocals for yourself. I can't describe them. Fashion toured with the Police on their second trip to the US, U2 toured with them just as Boy was released, as did the B52's, Joy Division, and John Cooper Clarke. A quintessential almost-was, an overlooked treasure. And then, just like that, this magical incarnation was over. Luke left, and Fashion became a different band. To this day, Product Perfect is a little known masterpiece that makes sense of the cultural and stylistic collisions from that era"

Sad and Lonely Review by Richie Unterberger: It comes as little surprise to hear that Albert Washington's 1973 album, Sad and Lonely, combines blues and soul, much as his slightly earlier sides for Fraternity did. The only difference is that the music sounded a little bit more polished, in an early-'70s sort of way. It was perhaps also tweaked a bit by being recorded in Memphis, some of the arrangements including backing by the Memphis Horns and backup vocals by the woman singers the Girls. "You're Messing Up My Mind" bears the heavy influence of James Brown's funk, and there are echoes of the Memphis soul of the likes of Otis Redding here and there. But for the most part it's a more relaxed endeavor, "My Mother's Prayer" making the artist's gospel leanings most explicit. Indeed, the album probably came along a few years too early for Washington to fully benefit from it -- his somewhat laid-back blues-soul fusion wasn't terribly widespread at the time, but would become more commonplace in blues music in the final decades of the 20th century.\
A. It's very rushed: a merry rave-up without being rampaging. While songs like "The Seventeen Forever" had the pace of L.A. punk, the band clearly didn't have an interest in the skull-bludgeoning impact, though Quercio brings in some fun snarl on "Grimly Forming." A slew of the songs had already been attempted in earlier versions, giving the group a chance to punch them up and around a bit for these takes. "She Turns to Flowers," "Going Home," and "Happen Happened" all benefit in turn, finding Quercio in at once strong and light voice -- his best area contemporary might have been Peter Case, though Quercio has a dreamier, wistful feeling in his vocals in contrast. Like many psych revival records, it's interesting to hear both the similarities and differences with the past -- while Quercio clearly knows his trippy guitar tricks, Troy Howell's drums kick through just a little more strongly in a clearer mix than many '60s forebears tried. The keyboards throughout from Quercio and Gregg Gutierrez add extra giddy fuel and flavor, a welcome merriment.

In the spring and summer of 1999, Satan’s Pilgrims were awaiting the release of their self-titled fifth album. Often described as a garage rock act, Royal Trux were an unravelling surge of ideas, influences, mangled theories and out-there meandering, setting the blueprint for lo-fi indie amid their intricate reflections on their self-destructive lifestyle. “Their music was wild and their lives even wilder.” The Guardian // “A chop-shop approach to pop history.” Pitchfork.

(This is a 2024 Record Store Day release)

20th anniversary deluxe edition, 45 RPM. 2xLP.

Gospel and soul legend Mavis Staples makes her Alligator debut with an inspired mixture of spiritual fervor, funky soul rhythms and rootsy acoustic instrumentation.

Have A Little Faith by Mavis Staples

The remarkable third act of Mavis Staples’ legendary career has seen the gospel, soul, and civil-rights icon embraced by new generations of fans through her collaborations with the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Run The Jewels, Neko Case, and Justin Vernon.
