Synthesizing a variety of heavy music influences into their own distinct musical identity, the band easily shifts from barn-burning punk to mid-tempo, hyper-distorted bass destruction all while maintaining a cohesive sound. Red Fang create gigantic rock songs that are easy to listen to (not easy listening, mind you) and qualify the simultaneous usage of both the thinking and the banging head, which are usually mutually exclusive. Their instrumentation is fluid and effortless, and the vocals are delivered melodically and forcefully, with enough rasp and effect saturation to fit nicely within the music. Agnello and Crutchfield worked together for most of December, along with the band: sister Allison Crutchfield on keyboards and percussion, Katherine Simonetti on bass, and Ashley Arnwine on drums; Katie Harkin, touring guitarist with Sleater-Kinney, also contributed lead guitar. The title track remixes A Productive Cough’s hardest-rocking selection, foregrounding its ominous strings and swelling organ and featuring a soulful new lead vocal from frequent +@ special-teams captain MATT "MONEY" MILLER, while “Only a Hobo” plucks an oft-forgotten gem from the dusty corners of the Bob Dylan songbook to paint a grim portrait of hopes dashed and potential squandered. Eeriest of all is “A Letter Home,” which, across nearly 17 minutes and more than 1,200 words, drags the listener along for a harrowing descent into the darkness and proves definitively that this ceremony is no mere monster mash. Brisbane (via Melbourne), Australia-based quartet Thigh Master are back with the long awaited second album Now For Example—the follow up to their debut Early Times. Following a string of sold-out singles as well as tours of U.S., Japan and Europe, the guitar-pop-guardians of the Brisbane underground deliver this latest, a twelve song hook-laden exertion, filled with imperious string bends and riffage framing witty tales of lethargic social observation, concocted by band leader Matthew Ford. Now For Example sees the most compelling and virtuosic combination of Thigh Master members to date, with Innez Tulloch (guitar / keys), Dusty Anastassiou (drums) and Daniel Ford (bass) contributing heavily to its foundations and creating a bulk of their parts off-the-cuff during recording sessions, which took place in various houses between Melbourne and Brisbane. The intervals of ragged, jangly guitar riffs interspersed with waves of distorted sonic mischief recall the late ’80s / early ’90s Flying Nun sound of The Clean, Bats and 3Ds.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/1427/products/Thigh_Master_cc490214-d149-4b6c-a15b-8aaed624bead.jpg?v=1572559638
aquarian-blood-a-love-that-leads-to-war-new-lp
Aquarian Blood - A Love That Leads to War [GOLD VINYL] - New LP

Gold vinyl

A Love That Leads To War by Aquarian Blood

A Love That Leads To War is a clear departure in style and mood for Memphis Tennessee’s Aquarian Blood. The band’s 2017’s debut LP on Goner Records, Last Nite In Paradise, is a chaotic punk epic rising and falling like the soundtrack to a paranoid nightmare. As a live act, the six-piece band’s sonic atrocity left clubs and house shows around Memphis on life support. The band’s follow up Goner release, A Love That Leads To War, is a more intimate offering of fifteen tracks. Indirectly sparked when full-band drummer Bill Curry was temporarily lost due to a broken arm, Aquarian Blood began playing out in February 2018 as the scaled-down, four-piece incarnation. This more personal album was written, recorded and (almost entirely) performed by founding husband/wife duo J.B. Horrell (Ex-Cult) and NOTS alum Laurel Horrell.

Just grazing the surface of the album can draw a line backwards from the acoustic entirety of A Love That Leads To War to Aquarian Blood’s unsettling past. The opening track “There’s A World” is a finger-picked fever dream nailing the rarified “beauty jumps into bed w/ horror” sweet spot so squarely one can’t believe it’s not a cover of some hippy hangover perfection dating back to the Nixon administration. It’s no first-song/best-song hat trick, but rather a deft setup of the next 39 minutes. “No Place I Know” “In the Water,” and “Their Dream” would fit in well in the shimmier side of the Shimmy Disc catalog, and “Thought of Her” is reminiscent of Damon and Naomi. Taken as a whole, though, this album retains the unsettling feel of the best atmospheric 60s loner psych better than any of the above, and the occasional addition of swirly moog and staccato drum pad beats keep it from slipping into nostalgia. Add the soul and swagger of a juke joint with the electricity coursing through a basement DIY show, and you’d begin to approach the experience of seeing this foursome live. The well-paced, multi-faceted set showcases a band dedicated to sonic exploration. “Don’t Need It,” which opens with a muscular swing and tight guitar lines, builds into a monster finish with a nasty corkscrew of a guitar line. “Sun,” a brawny thrasher, courses with huge, raw voltage riffs. “Chandelier,” a mid-tempo burner and vocal workout by Haynes, goes from croon to a crescendo that would shake any crystals hanging from the rafters.

Shared history in the city’s music scene brought the Seratones together a few years ago. All four had played together with one or another in various local punk bands, bonding through all-ages basement shows, gigs at skate parks and BBQ joints, and late nights listening to jazz and blues records. In a city of multiple genres, no fixed musical identity and a flood of cover bands, these adventurous musicians carved out their own path, personifying the do-it-yourself ethos. The group was quickly recognized after forming, winning the Louisiana Music Prize in 2013.

“Shreveport is always shifting its identity,” says Haynes. “You can do a lot of different things when it seems like every band is its own genre.”

Seratones’s music, created with collaborative songwriting and spontaneous creativity, is certainly their own, due perhaps in part to Shreveport’s unique sonic geography. The city sits at a nexus roughly equidistant from Memphis soul, Mississippi Delta Blues, and New Orleans jazz, with Texas swing located just over the nearby state border. The band’s sound draws from those touch points and more, ranging from Black Sabbath to Kind of Blue. They’ll happily connect the dots between Ornette Coleman and Jello Biafra.

Seratones have different names for the amalgamation of styles found on their debut: Their own “expression of freedom,” music that’s “all about waking people up,” a safe space to feel what you want. That’s from the opening verse to Era Bleak’s theme song, which also happens to open up their debut album - it’s as accurate a summary of 2020 as you’re likely to find, made all the more emphatic by a frantic spasm of nervy guitar jerks and a 100mph rhythm section that knows the best way to get you there. Whether you’re looking for a soundtrack or antidote to - or even simply a distraction from - the horrors of the age, this record has most assuredly got your back.

Comprising members of Dark/Light, Piss Test and other punk/post-punk outfits who really should be filling out your record shelves right now, Era Bleak are one of those bands where every ingredient is key. If you really wanted to, you could draw comparisons with present-day heroes like Nots, Nylex or White Lung, but this Portland, Oregon quartet are comfortably and confidently ploughing their own furrow, pulling as many tricks from 1980s hardcore as they do from the awkward crunch of the weirdos who defined the Ron Johnson label. It’s a helluva racket, and it’ll make you feel like dancing drunk at a foam party inside a vat of toxic waste. (For clarity, OF FUCKING COURSE that’s a good thing).

Maybe you’ll feel energised as singer Candy yells, ‘We’ve all got something to say / We’ve all got nothing to say’ on the vapid-slogan-bashing ‘Opinions’. Maybe you’ll want to punch the air with a bulldozer when ‘Mind Control Tower’ reaches its gloriously Adolescents-esque coda. Maybe the pulverising crunch of ‘Burning Sky’ will cause your adrenaline to surge like a blindfold slalom down a vertical drop straight into a pool of lava. Ultimately, this record gathers ten tracks’ worth of thrills, spills and hundred-dollar bills, and the results make for one of the finest punk records of the year.

In all likelihood, you’ll know some dipshits who greeted the sinister rise of the right-wing in recent years with glib remarks like, ‘At least the punk songs will be good.’ At the time, you were correct to roll your eyes in response before returning to the serious business of plotting to overthrow the government - there were and are more important things at stake. That record, In Person at PJ's, was cut in 1965 prior to the band's big 1966 hit "Dirty Water" and prior to the band having much in the way of original material, either; they were just a covers band cranking away on their home turf. Sundazed's archival 2015 release, Live On Tour 1966!, is a different beast, finding the band taking "Dirty Water" out on tour and playing at Hill Auditorium in the college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan during October of 1966. The Standells still rely on covers to fill out their nearly 35-minute set -- they smother on the organ for a slow-grooving "Please Please Please" and steer Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour" toward a hopping frat beat; they also debut a version of the Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" which would later pop up on their second album, The Hot Ones! -- but this is firmly grounded in the greasy, garagey stomp heard on "Dirty Water" and "Some Times Good Guys Don't Wear Black." These two hits naturally close out the group's ten-track set; both are played with a trebly gusto that doesn't feel as heavy or trashy as the original singles, but part of the appeal of this set is its lightness. The Standells do rock hard, as evidenced on their questioning originals "Why Did You Hurt Me?" and "Why Pick on Me?" but Live On Tour 1966! is distinguished by their good humor: how the group ribs the college crowd about the Wolverines playing Minnesota, how the band cornily introduces a tune by saying "for this song we got an Oscar…Mayer wiener," and how they interject dirty jokes into "Gloria" ("it looks like Jayne Mansfield with a hernia," "she takes out her false teeth and gums me to death"). Everything the Standells do in this concert is in good fun and, accordingly, the album is a bit of a party too.

The Standells’ amazing string of punkish, tough-guy anthems, like “Dirty Water” and “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White,” define the legacy of mid-sixties garage rock like nothing else. With the success of these records came ‘66 tours with the Rolling Stones and Beach Boys. From all reports, the Standells proved a superb live act. But for decades, their on-stage reputation rested on an earlier, Pre-Tower label live album documenting the Standells in an unrecognizably clean-cut night club incarnation. But there’s a happy ending to this story. It turns out the Standells were in fact recorded at their peak, LIVE ON TOUR-1966! At last, here’s the whole knock-out live act from the year the Standells stormed the charts. All the ‘66 hits are here including “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White,” “Why Pick On Me?” and of course, “Dirty Water” (in tremendous versions, all of them). Fan faves are also on board, like the fuzzed-out “Mr. Nobody” and stomping “Why Did You Hurt Me.” Highlights also include high energy covers of “Midnight Hour” and “Please, Please, Please,” to name just a few of these crowd-pleasers, showcasing the Standells’ R&B roots updated with ‘66 sheen. Hearing the Standells’ road-tested, extended take on “Gloria” is not to be missed, either! Rescued from a professionally recorded concert at the University of Michigan, the Standells are captured in astonishingly clean sound that rivals their legendary studio recordings.
