Old records are like seeing old friends, wrap your arms around it and hold it close, which is just as great I think, just a different kind of good-time animal, but I live to find the new punk records that give me that injection, that feeling I can feel not only when I'm listening to it, but even when just thinking about listening to it, like just before I play it...and while this Marked Men record is an old record, it somehow gives me that new-music injection, and that's some amazing junk. Since their debut album came out on Rip Off in 2002 (reissued in 2008 on Dirtnap!), the Marked Men have established themselves as one of the best, most distinctive, compelling, and instantly recognizable punk bands of the 2000's. They're also one of the more influential. You can pop the needle on "Ghosts" for 5 seconds and instantly be left without a doubt as to whom you are listening. It ain't pop-punk. It ain't power-pop. It ain't KBD or '77 style punk. Marked Men sound like absolutely no one but themselves. To End All Worth, the band’s debut album, is the culmination of years of basement-forged craftsmanship, when few were listening but the rats in the walls. The hard work the band put in hammering out these songs has manifested in a record that is beautiful and lasting, as sure of itself in its instrumentals as it is neurotically self-critical in its lyrics. This is a style of melodic punk rarely played anymore—raw, imperfect, threadbare, dizzying, sincere—passed over in favor of the fest-ready, social-media savvy, astroturfed pseudo-grunge that passes for “indie punk” these days. The politics on To End All Worth are deeply rooted in interconnected, intersectional experiences, and grapple with the personal pain of gender issues, race, class, and family— but you wouldn’t know it if you weren’t paying attention. Nervebreakers are a Texas punk band considered by many to be the first of their kind in the southwest. Like many others of this genre, they started out as a high school garage band doing sixties / early seventies cover songs. What made them unique was their range of material; from the music of the English Invasion to Yummy Yummy bubble gum as well as songs from punk pioneers MC-5 to true blue country artists like George Jones. The array of influence from all those cover songs melded into a two guitar, bass and drum sonic assault with a wild child vocalist up front. The members of the band began writing some of their own songs.

"On July 24, 1977 the Ramones first blitzkrieged Dallas at The Electric Ballroom, Nervebreakers opened. In 1978 they opened for the Sex Pistols at The Longhorn Ballroom. In 1979 when the Clash were calling here at Dallas’ Palladium, Nervebreakers let them know they weren’t in London anymore. Like a who’s who of punk rock history, our guys held their own as the Texas band to see. Nervebreakers weren’t just playing, they were the real deal. Home grown - born and raised. Texas proud and ready to kill. In the pre - D.I.Y. days of 1978 they self-released the EP “Politics” featuring “My Girlfriend is a Rock”. ”Girlfriend” became a hit in San Francisco, Sacramento and Boston and was later covered by the Angry Samoans and Wool - among others. This song (and the US invasion of Iraq) inspired sixteen year old punk upstarts, Spector 45, to put their spin on the song as “My Girlfriend’s in Iraq” in 2003. Other 7 inch gems that followed include “Hijack the Radio” b/w “Why Am I So Flipped” The black and blue vinyl “Girls, Girls, Girls, Girls, Girls” b/w a cover of the obscure Rolling Stones song “I’d much Rather be with the Boys”. The band also contributed two songs “So Sorry” (as the Barry Kooda Combo) and “I Love Your Neurosis” to the local punk rock compilation “Are We Too Late for the Trend” put out by ESR. Other acts featured on this late seventies Dallas area time capsule include the Telefones, The Vomit Pigs, The Skuds and Superman’s Girlfriend.

"Despite being recognized as the biggest and baddest of them all locally, they were also huge fans of Texas predecessors such as the 13th Floor Elevators. This eventually led to the band contacting Psychedelic rock pioneer Roky Erickson. Roky had just walked out of a mental institution so they offered to open shows for him and provide the legendary musician with a backup group. The result helped Roky back in the public eye. And “Roky Erickson and the Nervebreakers Live at the Palladium in 1979” was issued on the French label New Rose Records. On listening to level of musicianship and vocal prowess shown on their debut, you can only assume this group young blood’s signed a deal with the devil on their journey to the desert.

The album was recorded at the legendary Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California and like all great rock and roll it oozes the vibe and attitude heard on the record.

As Dave Catching says:
“Let it puncture your heart, bleed through your body and electrify your soul.
Because this … THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL.”

Produced by Dave Catching & Sky Valley Mistress
Recorded at Rancho de la Luna, Joshua Tree, California
Mixed by Starsky
Mastered by Pete Maher

. Limited first edition in yellow vinyl.

Soft Palms is the brainchild of Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and husband/musician Scott Montoya. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together scrappy dream pop and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons.

Soft Palms by Soft Palms

“My goal was to create something that sounded like a mental hug, a sonic embrace,” says Julia Kugel (The Coathangers/White Woods) about the self-titled debut album by Long Beach duo Soft Palms. “Everything can feel so wild and out of control, we really wanted to create something you could sink into and use to calm those emotions.” To achieve this goal, Kugel and her husband and partner Scott Montoya threaded together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sublime journey towards brighter horizons. Though the album’s eight songs were written in fits and starts over the course of nearly a decade, Soft Palms ultimately came together over a two-year period as an extension of Kugel and Montoya’s broader musical ventures. Together they book the Happy Sundays music festival, run the non-profit Studios for Schools, and organize the events calendar Long Beach POP—all in an effort to celebrate, promote, and produce art and music through community and positivity. In the moments when the wife-and-husband team aren’t elevating and empowering other artists, they’ve channeled their passion into Soft Palms. Album opener “Baddy” sets the tone for the album by laying down a simple guitar line with a grandiose vocal melody run through Phil Spector’s wall-of-sound production. The vibe continues through “Rainbow” where Kugel’s lilting voice floats against a backdrop of hypnotic upbeat instrumentation and Montoya’s dubbed out studio effects. The album continues to be a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies—from the heavenly country waltz and cosmic slide guitar on “Oh Then Then” to the gentle fingerpicked guitar and string swells of the closing ballad “Not Love.” The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya's unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA). But more than anything, Soft Palms captures Kugel and Montoya’s unflappable positivity and energy and serves as yet another outlet for their ongoing work to make the world a bit brighter.

LIMITED TO 1,500 COPIES WORLDWIDE
LIMITED TO 1,100 COPIES IN NORTH AMERICA. A collection of singles and compilation tracks from queercore legends Team Dresch released between 1994 and 2000. From that moment, DW and a constantly evolving troupe of friends and co-conspirators have forged a persistent trail of albums and EP’s on a number of interesting small labels such as RIP Society, Upset The Rhythm, Blackest Ever Black, Syncro-System, Adagio 830 and now the London-based Tough Love Records, who have also released many of David’s eponymous pop records. DW has also found time to play in a number of other interesting outfits, such as Rank/Xerox, Lace Curtain, Liberation, Scythe, Total Control and Burning Sensation over the years.

‘Pacific Kiss’ was primarily recorded in a dingy but comfortable practice space in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The core of the record is DW, bassist Max Schneider-Schumacher, drummer Dylan Stjepovic and keyboard wiz Joey Fishman. Additional fairy dust was sprinkled by Amber Gempton and Raven Mahon (vocals), Jef Brown (saxophone) and Mikey Young, who found time to contribute some off the wall guitar solos during the mixing process. ‘Pacific Kiss’ is a record for those astral voyages into the spheres conducted from bedrooms, kitchens, grassy fields and open car windows.

credits

PDX PUNK!

Shit Week by Shitty Weekend.

"Debut LP from Shitty Weekend, Portland’s most smart-mouthed DIY shredders. All tracks completely remastered. Contains every studio recording of the first lineup of Fashion including US singles and unreleased tracks. Liner notes from lead singer/guitarist Luke Sky... Fashion Music was formed originally in Birmingham, England, in 1978, when they also founded their own Fashion Music label; from this point forward, the band was generally (though not completely consistently) identified as Fashion, as distinct from the name of their self-owned label. Fashion released their first two singles ("Steady Eddie Steady" and "Citinite") as independent issues on the UK in November 1978 and June 1979 respectively. The group was quickly picked up by I.R.S., who put out a third single in the US in September 1979, "The Innocent". Their sound was varied, playing punk, post-punk and indie repertoire, although Mulligan at that time also had a synthesizer which later characterized the future synthpop years of the band. Still signed to I.R.S., in 1979 they recorded and released their first album, Product Perfect. All three members were credited as having written the songs collectively. They toured the UK with U2, both the UK and US with The Police, and opened for The B-52's on their first British tour. In March 1980, no longer associated with I.R.S., Fashion released their "Silver Blades" single, again on their own Fashion Music label. Later in 1980 they also released one more song, "Let Go", on a Birmingham bands compilation called Bouncing in the Red (EMI). In June 1980, after a last gig in London with U2, Luke James left the band.

"This band from Birmingham, England, blended offbeat funk with an independent spirit that seemed destined to ensure them commercial success. Originally a trio comprising John Mulligan (bass), Dix (drums) and Luke (guitar), Fashion issued three diverse singles on their own label, spurred on by the do-it-yourself attitudes in the wake of punk. After November 1978’s ‘Steady Eddie Steady’ came ‘Citinite’ in June and then Perfect Product, an impressive debut album. ‘Silver Blades’ followed in March 1980, ensuring a contract with Arista Records. Now swelled to a six-piece with Martin Stoker (ex-Dance; Bureau) on drums, vocalist Tony (ex-Neon Hearts) and main songwriter De Harriss, many predicted that their resultant singles would break the band on the back of the futurist scene of the early 80s. ‘Street Player - Mechanik’ in March 1982, ‘Love Shadow’ in August and later, ‘Eye Talk’ in January 1984, all scraped the lower reaches of the chart, but failed to establish the band in the public eye. Despite this, Fashion enjoyed a strong undercurrent of support, reflected in a UK Top 10 album, Fabrique, in June 1982. However, interest gradually waned, the band moved to Epic, and Twilight Of The Idols, issued exactly two years later, was not as warmly received."

"

There’s a mystery to Vanishing Twin – from their name to the multitude of sounds that inhabit their music. Bombing melodies into the stone-age with its needle-inthe-red, anti-production approach, Proof of Youth lurches from bubblegum pop to white noise in a heartbeat. The album brings a gang of glorious misfits to the party - including Public Enemy legend Chuck D, the original Double Dutch Divas, Maryland’s pint sized Rapper’s Delight Club, Marina from Bonde Do Role, Amsterdam based Solex and Washington DC’s Frederick Douglas All Star Cheer Team. Songs on Proof of Youth include Grip Like A Vice which sees b-girls slaying the fellas with brass blasts, a clap machine, a pound shop keyboard and a ton of feedback. Doing it Right sounds like a marching band fully cranked through a Marshall stack. Keys to the City is epic widescreen Ennio Morricone transplanted to 70’s Brooklyn. Titanic Vandalism slams blaxploitation boogie against guitar crunch with some heavyweight vocal sparring from the ladyeez. Patricia’s Moving Picture is a sun soaked bus journey through a musical instrument shop. Unlike Electric Guitar One, EG2: Dowsing Voice features vocal improvisation, unconventional singing and extended vocal techniques free from lyrics - like the throat singing on "In the Cave..." which is meant to be the voices of crones gathering in a rhythmic and physical ritual. Rundle was led to these voices by unseen forces along with the immense impact of the Welsh water: ocean, rivers springs and wells that gave the album its extended title Dowsing Voice. While there is some focus on vocal and story here, her textural and even bombastic guitar improvisations are featured throughout the album. Body/Head is the duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace. Nace has charted an iconoclastic trajectory as a freewheeling improviser and composer on his own and in group settings. Gordon, best known as a member of Sonic Youth, was always active outside that band during its existence and continues to expand her tireless horizons since its dissolution. To put it plain, on Body/Dilloway/Head there are guitars and vocals and magnetic tape and amplification. These elements interact with the aid of effects machines. But the technical aspects of how it was crafted matter not a whit. Plus, any attempt to describe the nature of this particular collaboration is fraught. It’s impossible to say where lines might get drawn, because there simply aren’t any. Even the boundaries between processing and playing are erased. Every time it sounds like Aaron Dilloway processing Body/Head, you blink or turn your head and it sounds like Body/Head playing Aaron Dilloway. You can sift back through the tributaries of this formidable collective discography and be just as flummoxed. The similarities and the distinctions are endless. It’s impossible to tell where one stops and the other starts. The shifts in the pieces can seem to come out of nowhere. Over and over one gets the sense that the music is trying to wake itself from a dream. Gordon and Nace’s guitars churn against Dilloway’s serpentine loops and squealing treatments. The components entwine like brambles, crawling and building, moving even when seeming to rest. It starts with a low hum and some garbled murmurings. Birth should have been like that, you might find yourself thinking. It threatens to start. It halts. It holds. It hovers. It lurches. Dilloway’s hand looms large, and after a while, the familiar pulse of Nace and Gordon’s guitars enters, and as soon as you start to orient yourself, you’re lost again. The atmospheres melt into one another. The piece arcs slowly. Plateaus and vistas. This is the side-long lead-off, “Body/Erase.” Flip the record over. “Goin’ Down” is almost plaintive in feel, yet mathematical in structure. There’s something about the way it occurs in time. There’s a place somewhere in the brain (mine, at least) where the wide open vistas of desert highways and the compulsive interior pressure of insomniac experience meet and twirl and dance and laugh and shudder. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, familiar and strange, terrifying and comforting, but it’s the only place I’ve ever been that seems like a deity might be nearby, so it’s cool to find a track that evokes that. “Secret Cuts” starts off like a sentient machine breathing heavily in the summer heat, and then begins to subsume itself many times over. Fragments of Gordon’s vocals flutter in and out, traversing blurred clouds. Amp noise gurgles. Guitar loops stutter. The piece builds to a shimmering mirage, then nose-dives into still black waters and shorts out like a downed power line. If disquieting drama appeals to you, the notion has perhaps here reached its sonic peak. One of this music’s many pleasures is the inability to identify specific emotions within it, despite the undeniable emotional responses it elicits. Their only US chart entry was ‘I Believe In Miracles,’ a funky slice of bubblegum soul with a catchy, sing-along chorus released on the Prophesy label that briefly saw them make the lower reaches of the R&B charts in September 1973. Even though the sisters ceased performing together in 1975, their greatest tune, ‘I Believe In Miracles’ began to live a charmed life. In 1988, the song was resurrected as part of the UK ‘Rare Groove’ scene which resulted in it denting the bottom end of the UK pop charts (it peaked at No. 72). British vocal group, The Pasadenas, cut their own version of the tune in 1989, and a year later, Public Enemy sampled ‘Miracles’ for their track, ’Can’t Do Nuttin’ For Ya Man.’

W/ download that included 14 bonus tracks
Icky Mettle (Reissue) by Archers of Loaf

Icky Mettle Review by Gregory Heaney

Raw, swirling, and remarkably brash, Archers of Loaf’s debut, Icky Mettle, helped to establish the North Carolina band as a force to be reckoned with in the pantheon of '90s indie rock. This tension is held up throughout the entire album as both sides of Archers of Loaf’s dual nature fight for supremacy in a battle that would leave a permanent mark on the indie rock landscape.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/1427/products/R-10759440-1503815114-8664_jpeg_a90fd77e-31d6-4b56-9eb5-d438c372c5e6.jpg?v=1656917568
archers-of-loaf-white-trash-heroes-deluxe-remaster-white-vinyl-new-lp
Archers Of Loaf ‎– White Trash Heroes (Deluxe Remaster) [WHITE VINYL] – New LP
download includes album + 13 bonus tracks. gatefold.

White Trash Heroes Review

by Peter J. The opening, "Fashion Bleeds," is the closest the band comes to its days of yore, with a chugging drumbeat and vocalist Eric Bachman's strained vocals leading the way. The presence of a keyboard that soon starts to drift in sets the tone for the rest of the record, a dark and moody venture with some unexpected styles emanating from the group.
White Trash Heroes (Deluxe Remaster) by Archers of Loaf
They still get raucous and loud on occasion, but sometimes they mask it under a wave of distorted sounds or in the guise of a slowed-down dirge. The closing title track is also of note, in that its sinister keyboard and drum machine sounds, along with Bachmann's oddly throaty and melodic vocals, are exactly what the singer went on to do with his next group, Crooked Fingers. In fact, White Trash Heroes sounds more like a mix of the two groups than an actual Archers record, a fact that anyone familiar with the latter group will certainly realize to be a good thing. This is certainly not the simple and sloppy indie rock outfit that churned out short poppy hits in the mid-'90s, but the band clearly developed into something equally astounding and, with a few listens, the emotion and craftsmanship of these songs prove to be a truly impressive feat.
