This terrific LP shows "growth" in all the best ways. Without abandoning its signature honeyed melodies and high-spirited candy pop style, the band has made a more mature and consistent album that's definitely its best to date. Songs like "Make Up Your Mind" and the gorgeous "Love You To Pieces" are steeped in the timeless traditions of Brill Building and British Invasion pop, yet feel entirely fresh in the year 2013. Produced by the Marked Men's Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke, Bras is a major departure from the '77 pop/punk feel of 2011's terrific Kings of the Weekend. This time the band brings a tougher, harder-edged sound and takes on a wider variety of musical styles. While still very much in the classic vein of Texan garage/punk, Bad Sports are also bringing to mind the heyday of New York City punk. With hints of Dead Boys snarl, Dictators thump, and even some artier Lou Reed/Television leanings, this record finds the trio refining its songwriting chops and rocking harder than ever. The album's got a little bit of everything - from booming Cheap Trick style power pop to straight-up catchy garage punk to grimy proto-punk not far removed from Orville's other band OBN IIIs. And while Bras builds on the foundation of previous records, quite frankly it blows away anything else the band has done to date. If that scares you, it shouldn’t, because this is pretty badass. That this is a Japanese band is kind of mind blowing. He was responsible for the recording and production of this album, which took place in Tokyo and Denton, Texas, along with Fumito Yamazaki, a member of the band. Now that we have your attention, let's talk about Never Bloom, the second album by Yusuke Okada, Fumito Yamazaki, Masashi Watanabe, Miso Takaoka and Takahide Maruyama, released by one of our new favorite labels, ALIEN SNATCH! RECORDS. After the first surprise when seeing the Japanese roots of the band, it takes a few seconds of "Feel Okay" to realize that those musical roots come from across the world, clinging to American music at its best. What at first glance appears to be just a garage band, is far more than that. Following a plethoric start, with a cheerful garage-pop, a southern touch and a piano giving it a perfect sweet twist, bringing back memories of The Strange Boys, in “Flowers” they show us their most brazen side. Garage punk à la Dead Ghosts or Black Lips, with vibrant guitars that intertwine Okada’s raw and raspy voice, adorned by vocals that elevate the song to a higher dimension. In a perfect album, despite having only 8 tracks, could not miss that moving ballad, sung from the depths of the heart, "Last Song". After hearing "this is the last song, 'cause I wanna die", one sighs with relief when "To The Moon" starts, another delicacy, another perfect combination of contagious rhythm, distant guitars and psychedelia that takes you to a walk on the moon, which links to "Strange Patterns" without blinking, adding an organ like fallen from heaven. By now you may have noticed that this has nothing to do with what Jeff Burke usually does, so what? The B-side will only reaffirm your faith in them or will make you believers once and for all. "With The Devil" is one of the most brilliant tracks of this particularly bright Never Bloom, with a more furious tone, faster, approaching punk without leaving the chapel, with that constant and magic echo. In "You'll Never Know", more organ, more psychedelia, setting the perfect soundtrack for a trip into the wilderness with your pocket full of peyote, and immediately we stumble upon the mega-harmonious garage of "Who Wants To Buy My Soul", gorgeous, bringing us tears of joy remembering what Harlem did a few years ago, giving a golden finale to a remarkable second reference.

RAZORCAKE (US) APRIL 2014
Unusually mid-paced power pop from Tokyo, Japan. Whereas you have acts like Gentleman Jesse And His Men or the Reigning Sound mixing in bouncy numbers alongside their slower ballads, nearly all of eight songs on this platter stay on course with a slow and simple pace. The dreary vocals don’t do much to help get me psyched on this record, which is a pity because the moments that do rock are overshadowed by the laid back nature of the rest of the tracks: sort of like drinking a six pack of beer and only getting a buzz from two of them. Tinges of this new direction were scattered through their recent split with NOTHINGTON (Asian Man Records, 2013), but this recording session definitely explores new musical avenues and influences; and yielded something leagues apart from their last full length, "Victoria" (2012). Much like you can follow the (musical) progression of hugely successful bands like WEEZER, BUILT TO SPILL, or GREEN DAY, this album allows you to gain a deeper understanding of a band that may not have left such a multi-dimensional impression with their first few releases. This band certainly has grown and evolved, and the men have as well. The spectacular songwriting that DTS has consistently pumped out will never stop, and it's refreshing to see that unlike so many bands, they're building upon it, not rehashing it; and not just giving fans a familiar, calculated new release to get bored with quickly. It's exciting to know these guys are still in their early 20's, and have so much more to offer as well... It's a fair assessment that lots of DOWNTOWN STRUTS' fans will absolutely love this right out of the package; and it will have to grow on others. Staying true to the passion that DTS have for life, friendship, and making top-quality tunes, this EP really shows how diverse one band can be, and how their message and angst can manifest itself many ways! Take a chance on this EP - you'll be glad you did!

"That album rules!" -- Seth P.
Lower Berth by ИO///sé

"13 new power-packed punch tracks from this incredible American punk band (now based in Portland/Oakland). Lower Berth is comprised of songwriting prowess backed by killer riffs, infectious melodies, an impervious rhythm section, and absolutely no filler and fluff. The final product is 13 tracks of stick-in-your-brain groove that varies from stomping anthem (e.g., "One Step Behind") to DANGERHOUSE or BUZZCOCKS-esque pop genius (e.g., "Buried Alive"). ИO///Sé mixes a wide array of disparate influences and creates something familiar but original. There are elements of old classics like WIPERS and X (Australia) along with newer bands like RED DONS, THE ESTRANGED, and MARKED MEN. If you are familiar with the first LP, Lower Berth will feel like a natural progression. If you’re new to the band, welcome and enjoy. Amid these grooves there are nuggets aplenty from the hot rodding rubber burning scowling and smoking hot ‘let’s go to the church’ – a blistering cover of a (I’m embarrassed to admit unfamiliar) lost gem by the hit here grilled, souped up and fitted with a full on kick ass V12 grind much reminiscent of the Mono Men at the height of their powers to the slinky and demurred 50’s shoo bop of ‘punch me in the face’ rethreaded here with a killer Thunders / Palladin like vibe that tailgates their rendering of ‘love is strange’ – this album just doesn’t understand the notion of disappointing. ’darkest sunshine’ is ablaze in howling harmonicas from out of which the sounds of frenetic and frenzied riff scowls surge to a dirty, raw and primal coda that heads might imagine being the sound of a rabid Baby Woodrose with a rocket up their back pipe. And just when you think it can’t get any better the subtly sexy ’let me breathe’ saunters in with the ghost of Link sitting on its shoulder to cook up a wig flipping strut gouged blues shimmy. Add in to the mix the previously mentioned ’pretty horse’ which still sounds to these ears like a kooky kaleidoscopic 50’s bubble grooved haze refracted through an Elephant 6 collective lens by Olivia tremor control and neutral milk hotel under the ever watchful eye of the mercurial Meek whilst ‘jail inside your heart’ is just pure classic era lazy eyed Neil Young. All said best of the set by the merest whisker is the opener ’Sister Maree’ – I kid you not when I say I’d sworn I’d died and gone to heaven upon hearing this for this honey swoons and kicks with such honky tonk flair as to have you thinking it was the Small Faces channelling Dylan. Make no mistake, though: Bad Sports are not a “retro” band. Constant Stimulation is simply a timeless-yet-modern masterpiece, that sounds like it could have come out of just about any era of rock, but is also as NOW as anything else currently out there.

Their history with its Texas peers of the same ilk paired along with their time spent in projects like OBN III’s, Radioactivity, Wax Museums and VIDEO (among others), has served Bad Sports well. They’ve honed themselves into being a complicated and calculating rock machine instead of just a talented party band, dishing out fuzzed-out fury, chugging chords and yelled vocals. Now, there’s a little more finesse and more care taken to let Neeley’s words and voice ring out; as close to sing-singing the band has come on a record.

There’s a general nimble brightness to the production, throughout. Gone are the days of fuzz and total distortion making the songs into jumping fleas from one track to the next. Adding a little pacing and extending their palette - the lazy chug in “Everything We Wanted” is fed by ample tremolo and loiters in its own 90s slacker rock vibe while “Ode to Power” and “Constant Stimulation” could be intertwined among the tracklists of the newest Rolling Blackouts C.F. or Shame records - equalizes things a bit because the main chunk of this record is straight-up punk, fed on busted pieces of guitar strings and broken drumsticks. It’s lean and tough.

2012’s King of the Weekend and 2013’s Bras was love (and lack thereof)-focused, covered in equal parts, sweat, lipstick, beer, grime and glitter. Granted, there are little flashes of heartbreak thrown in on Constant Stimulation, but not quite like before. This record broils and stews over a response to the modern world and its eroding and addling effects, kicking its lyrics out to be heard clearly. No track exemplifies this better than the title track on which Neeley sings, “I need constant stimulation in my ears and in my eyes or I don’t sleep at night…deprivation chambers only worsen my dreams.” Maybe this more spaciously spare sound is their response to that veritable constant stimulation. It was due, at least in part, to the band’s main songwriters, ALLISON CRUTCHFIELD and KYLE GILBRIDE, ending their romantic relationship. But when the band found themselves in a room again years later, the conversation turned back to Swearin’. They realized that what they all wanted was to not just play shows, but to make a new record. They wanted to do something that reflected the people they’d become during those intervening years. Before long, Crutchfield and Gilbride had a new batch of Swearin’ songs, ones that meshed with the sound they’d originally developed together but boldly pushed things forward. Fall into the Sun is a Swearin’ record that doesn’t try to obscure the passage of time but instead embraces it. Listening to Fall into the Sun, Swearin’ is a more confident, collaborative version than the one people first came to know. Crutchfield and Gilbride always had an innate ability to mirror the other’s movements in songs, but here, they build a focused lyrical perspective across their songs, one that’s thankful for their past, but looks boldly toward the future.
Fall into the Sun by Swearin'

SHIPPING NOW!!

Track List :
1. TAD – Jack
2. Cherubs - Shoofly
3. Laughing Hyenas – Wild Heart
4. Die Kreuzen – Gone Away
5. Killdozer - Lupus
6. The Crucifucks - Wisconsin
7. Cosmic Psychos – Dead Roo
8. Young Fresh Fellows – Sittin’ On A Pitchfork
9. The Fluid – Our Love
10. Gumball - Accelerator
11. Urge Overkill - Faroutski
12. The Singing Irishman – Balloon Man

Description:
American Noise: Vol. 2 is the anticipated second limited edition vinyl release soundtrack companion to The Smart Studios Story, a groundbreaking documentary about the history of Madison, Wisconsin’s Smart Studios and its role in recording and supporting DIY/independent music in the Midwest.

They’ve apparently got better things to do than name their albums, and considering the crisp, hardcore-influenced garage-punk they’re doling out, I suppose I can’t complain. Much like their debut, I’m reminded of Video, as well as Career Suicide and Carbonas, maybe a little Dead Boys too, but there’s no confusing Moral Panic with a band that existed decades ago. They’re tight and to the point, and while they may lack the bite or individual edge one might associate with a group released by Total Punk or Feel It, Moral Panic run through their set with confidence and skill. The only thing I’m waiting for is some distinguishable aspect to Moral Panic’s songs, of which there currently really isn’t, but perhaps distinction is not their goal so much as tough, workmanlike garage-punk. To their credit, the song “Flower Violence” has a chorus of “so sick of this flower violence / just want some power violence”, which may be the first instance of a garage-punk band celebrating Man Is The Bastard and Crossed Out in song. It’s a start! PAGANS (deren „Not now no way“ wird hier gecovert), DEAD BOYS, DICTATORS und Co. wurden wiederholt in diesem Kontext bemüht, die Wiederholung macht den Vergleich nicht lahmer oder unzutreffender. The band picked up a new rhythm section in the interim, adding Clinton Bell and Dylan Prosser, which may account for increase in density. The core duo of Predrag Delibasich and Lee Jenkins remain, slashing strings and barking mad poetry, in a thrashing, slamming, stinging continuum between Wire-ish post-punk and Clash-like clangor. Landscapes of Merriment is Zerodent’s best so far, and that’s saying something. I first caught up with Zerodent during our first Bandcamp feature (we’re working on another now), and observed of the Soulmender EP that “the temptation is to compare them to blunt and basic outfits like Eddy Current Suppression Ring, the punch and hook of these three cuts links them back to angry, funny, tuneful British punk like the Buzzcocks and Half Man Half Biscuit.” Landscapes explores rougher territories, still tuneful but more bruising. The recoil from these guitar licks kicks like machine gun butts. You can get a long way on a riff and some adrenaline in this sort of music, but Zerodent goes beyond that with actual hooks and even, sometimes, melody, though often expressed through the instruments rather than Jenkins spoke-sung, workingman’s rants. The double-timed drumming and ringing guitar chords of “Stay In,” recall the sweat-soaked anthemry of the Marked Men. There’s a song in there, even if it’s hammered to pieces by aggression, and you can hear it in your head when it’s over. “Perpetual Obligation” has the same kind of melodic heft, a tune that gives shape to its rattling, battering assault. Even the super-jacked, close to hard-core “It Was Never Meant to Be,” buries a hook in its juddering onslaught, and good luck trying to get it out once lodged. This is not to minimize the sheer, onrushing exultation of a punk band on its game, punching out violent tumults of guitar, bass, drums and shouts. Zerodent does that really well. But when you come out, covered with lacerations, spilled beer and anomie, you have a song in your head, too. Score. On Alien Snatch Records?! One of my favorite bands put out a record on one of my all-time favorite labels, and nobody knew anything about it until a week ago?! Now that was a fiercely-guarded secret! Respect! Alien Snatch Records has been setting the standard for what a punk rock label ought to be for 20 years now. From assembling a roster including the likes of the Kidnappers, Real Losers, Fevers, Yum Yums, Minds, and Leg Hounds in its early 2000s heyday to releasing brilliant music by current-day bands such as Freak Genes and The #1s, Alien Snatch has remained a go-to for any fan of garage-punk and power pop. Moncton, New Brunswick's mighty Phone Jerks could not be a more fitting addition to the Alien Snatch family. Their debut LP hearkens back to countless beloved garage-punk LPs of the '90s and early 2000s. And I gotta tell you the thing is absolutely KILLER! Upon hearing "Nothing There", you just might find yourself convinced that The Rip Offs have gotten back together! Alien Snatch honcho Daniel has astutely pointed out that he could have released this album in any year of the label's history. These tunes are that timeless. Of course Phone Jerks sound like a band that could have been peers with Loli and the Chones, The Metros, Teengenerate, etc. Yet they also align perfectly with modern-day greats like Gino & The Goons and Sick Thoughts. This, my friends, is garage-punk the way it ought to be: trashy, lo-fi, and intentionally devoid of originality. Why are there not more bands like this?! Being four upstanding Canadians who value your hard-earned dollar, Phone Jerks have delivered almost entirely brand-new material for this debut album (along with covers of "Revolution" by Australia's X and "Violence, Anarchy, Baby, Mother, Daddy-O, Dig" by Newfoundland punk legends Da Slyme). No tracks from the Goodbye Boozy 7" have been repeated, and only two songs re-appear from the band's demo tape. The instant you dig into "Bitchiker", you will find yourself fondly recalling a time when every new Rip Off Records release was an event worth celebrating. And come on: how can an album that begins with a song about killing someone not be the best record of the year?! These songs are all so ripping and catchy and tremendously fun to listen to. This is an album that you just have to crank super loud. And half the fun of this record is going through it track by track and asking, "Who are they ripping off here?"! The fact that Phone Jerks have three different lead singers makes it all that much cooler. Emily, Tyler, and Brian each bring something unique to the table (and you know, they all seem intent on smashing that table). The production (kudos Dave Belliveau and James O'Toole!) is spot-on for what budget rock ought to be. You know how modern-day reviewers are so fond of using "crackling" as an adjective? This album is crackling. Literally. So why aren't there more bands like Phone Jerks? I don't know, but maybe there will be after their debut album makes the rounds! Canada is ahead of the curve as always (especially in Moncton, where they observe the Atlantic Time Zone). With me poised to name an Alien Snatch release album of the year, it sure feels like old times! On her first release for Mint Records, Edmonton’s Cassia Hardy blazes through riff-wielding indie-rock symphonies for anyone striving to stay alive and create a brighter future. By sharing her own journey towards hope, she hopes to light a path for anyone lost in the dark. As Hardy explains in its liner notes, “this record is dedicated to decolonial activists, anti-fascist agitators, prairie queers fighting for community and a better life.” Since Wares’ origin as a solo project, Hardy’s guitar skills have taken centre stage. Learning how to play thrash-metal solos provided her with the instrumental ability to create emotionally riveting songs, rising to meet the intensely personal lyrics about her life experiences. While the Flying V hasn’t left her hands since the days of playing riffs by Megadeth and Metallica, she learned to meld these six-string pyrotechnics with loud-quiet-loud dynamics into a sound that feels vibrantly original. Previous Wares releases have flickered with a slow burn, yet Survival lights the fuse from ominous to explosive in its first sixty seconds. This change in mood can be credited to the past year of touring across Canada with the stalwart live band of keyboardist Jamie Mclean, bassist Matthew Gooding, and drummer Holly Greaves, who also perform throughout the album. Their arrangements are meticulous, while Hardy’s production alongside engineers Mason Pixel and Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) refine these songs into crystalline clarity. Hardy’s dramatically enunciated vocal delivery has earned comparisons to Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, but she draws more inspiration from Arthur Russell and cult Albertan queer-punk group Fist City. Her sonic imagination travels far beyond overdriven shredding, from the swooning acoustic guitars of “Jenny Says” to the Hold Steady-style organ-rock of “Surface World.” The result is 2020’s answer to Against Me!’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues or G.L.O.S.S.’s Trans Day Of Revenge with a far wider musical range.

• Riff-wielding indie rock symphonies from Edmonton’s Cassia Hardy
• Produced with Mason Pixel and Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung)
• For fans of Arthur Russell, Fist City, Destroyer, Against Me!’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues and G.L.O.S.S.’s Trans Day Of Revenge
• No export to UK / EU and Canada

Recorded mostly at Bikini Bottom by Mason Pitzel
Mixed by Jesse Gander
Mastered by Ryan Morey

Cover by Kira Buro
Photo by Josh Bookhalter and Charlie Paget

Cassia Hardy: Vocals, guitars, keys, percussion
Jamie McLean: Keys, backup vocals
Matthew Gooding: Bass
Holly Greaves: Drums, percussion, backup vocals
Mason Pitzel: ‘Drums’

Love and thanks to: Ann & Cecil Hardy, Niko Stratis, Jesse Northey, The SMF, The Aviary, The Empress, The Quiltbag, RCYK, Mustafa, Marlaena, Jessica, Trevor McNeeley, Leila Sidi, Mal & Trev, PJ & Erin, Cat & Jaye, Andy & Liz, and everyone who’s hosted us, shared a stage with us, and helped us out on the way.

This record is dedicated to decolonial activists, anti fascist agitators, prairie queers fighting for community and a better life.

Thanks for listening.

all rights reserved

"Execütors- All Against All LP. Bubbling up from the toxic smokestacks of New Jersey comes the east coast's newest shit-makers Execütors. These guys sound like a scummy hammer and sickle thug-punk band coming straight outta the UK in the early 80's. While the band were writing the album they became fascinated by the Mars One program- a global project which aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars.Applicants are offered a one way ticket- never to see earth again. This fascinated Holly and David who drew parallels between this mission and their own isolation as a band.Continuing the heaviness of " This is Eggland" "I am Moron" brings more depth to their sound bringing with it a mix of heavy psych, pop and strangeness. Some songs flicker between an earthly realism and the otherworldly loneliness of a one way space mission. While in contrast, Insect Repellent launches a gonzo-style attack against the middle classes and Bearpit questions the essence of working class freedom. With no booking agent, manager, record label or publisher The Lovely Eggs are truly independent. And support for them is snowballing. They are selling out bigger and bigger venues and more eggheads are joining them in their crusade against bullshit. The Lovely Eggs say it how it is. They've never been afraid to swim against the current and now they've got an army of fans behind them.Don't miss out on the most collectible record of the year! Never played. "After four self-released cassettes, Montréal's premier art-punk/neo-proto-punk band Protruders makes its vinyl debut with a 25-minute 12-inch of very groovy sounds. The sound is a bit clearer and maybe a little beefier—some of the noise gives way to a more relaxed and expansive approach. The psych quotient is higher. But the heart of the band is still beating for the sort of raw open-minded non-generic punk that once came from the likes of Rocket From The Tombs, Swell Maps, Dead Moon, Dancing Cigarettes, etc. “Fruit Hang” has a perfect mid-70s style garage feel—like a Boston pre-punk band tearin’ it up at the Rat! This could be the hit, kidz! Skronky sax gives “Hydrophytol” a kinda Hawkwind/no-wave feel. And dig “No Stone”—a slower one, catchy as hell—I swear it could pass for an outtake from the Saints circa 1978. Solid—another hit! At five minutes, the title track stretches things out a bit. This one has a definite Ubu/Voidoids vibe—nasty angular spazz-punk with a little more sax blat added. Very nice guitar stuff happening here. We get some weirdo HC action on “Stabilizer” and more hot guitar squiggles. “Tax 101” is maybe a “typical” Protruders song—that means good! “Wrong Way Sign,” pushes things over the six-minute mark, with a strong psych-punk feel (Wipers?) and some totally swell rock-jam stuff at the end. Wow. This record is a significant step for the band and an impressive way to start their vinyl career as they gain the higher visibility they deserve. I thought to myself, ‘Howard Grimes is the rhythm of the city.’ My next thought was, ‘That sounds like a title track.’” Conjuring up his own unique musical mélange –a sweet spot where the sound of Sun blues, Stax soul, and Hi R&B all meet – it’s a record steeped in the geography and culture of Memphis, which Keith has called home for the last 15 years. “The vibe came about organically from playing Beale Street and Graceland and working with horn sections more frequently the last few years,” says Keith. Keith’s fifth solo album – and his first self-produced effort – 'The Rhythm of the City' finds him expanding his approach on a horn-heavy 10-song collection that’s in thrall to the classic sounds of Bluff City soul and rock and roll. The Rhythm of the City was recorded to tape at Electraphonic Studios, and engineered by Keith’s frequent collaborator, Scott Bomar (bandleader of the Bo-Keys, Don Bryant producer, and film composer for Dolemite Is My Name). “Rhythm confidently stakes its claim as Keith’s best album, with a mix of stinging love songs (“How Can You Walk Away”) halting heartbreakers (“I Don’t Wanna Know”), bluesy rambles (“If I Had Money”) and deep soul explorations (“How Do I Say No) that feel like instant classics.” (Bob Mehr, author, Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements)

For fans of: Reigning Sound, Stax Records, Wilco, Chuck Prophet, Sun Records, Motel Mirrors.

released 2021

All songs written by John Paul Keith except "The Sun's Gonna Shine Again", written by John Paul Keith and Scott Bomar.

Produced by John Paul Keith
Executive producer: Ronny Russell
Engineered by Scott Bomar and Adam Hill and mixed by Scott Bomar at Electraphonic Recording, Memphis, TN
Mastered by Jim Demain
Horn arrangements on tracks 1, 2, 7, and 9 by Art Edmaiston
Horn arrangements on tracks 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 by Marc Franklin

John Paul Keith: vocals, guitar
Tierinii Jackson: vocals
Tikyra Jackson: vocals
Matthew Wilson: bass, vocals
Danny Banks: drums, vocals
Al Gamble: organ, piano
Marc Franklin: trumpet
Art Edmaiston: tenor saxophone
Kirk Smothers: baritone saxophone
Archie “Hubbie” Turner: clavinet

Graphic design by Christopher Capelle
Cover photograph by Jim Herrington
Back photograph by Matthew Wilson
Interior photographs by Max Kaplan

Tierinii Jackson and Tikyra Jackson appear courtesy of Southern Avenue Music.

Formed by Stevo Atambire and produced by Wanlov (Fok’n Bois) and Percy Yip Tong, Alostmen’s music is based around the Frafra traditions of the kologo, a stringed lute, using traditional instrumentation in entirely new ways. “I like to force my instrument to work,” explains Stevo. “I’m a yout’man and into rap, reggae, Malian music. Maurer, Fernandez, and his girlfriend Corey were enjoying a Sunday afternoon boat ride in the swamps of Xochimilco, Mexico City, and Maurer was fascinated by the rough and tumble trajineros who expertly manned their hand-painted gondolas in the canals. Over a bottle of ice-cold Don Julio Blanco, Maurer and Fernandez envisioned a plot where a lovelorn working-class trajinero must commit crimes to keep his upper-middle class fresa girlfriend happy. Loosely based on the plot of Emilio "El Indio" Fernández 1943 film Maria Candelaria, our protagonist commits a crime of passion and ends up in jail. He makes a plea to himself for his own happiness and survival, a passionate cry of "Ni Carcel/Ni Ella/Ni Nerds" which translates to "Not jail, not her, not nerds." (The Mexican Spanish equivalent of nerds, ñoños, is sung on the final word of the song.)

Maurer has been a student of the Spanish language for a couple of decades with stints living and working in both Spain and Mexico. Now, the band has returned with their third full length, Buds, an album three years in the making that find the band deftly maintaining their endearingly steadfast identity while also reckoning with the inevitability of change. Made up of brothers along with their childhood friend, Ovlov's musical DNA is rooted in the kind of familiarity that can only come from real friends playing together. It's largely that chemistry that steers the band's approach: if it doesn't feel right for everyone, don't do it. Their inclinations paid off with both of their full length albums, AM and Tru, both release impossible to keep on the shelves and constantly going out of stock upon repressing. Ovlov manage to gain more followers with every passing day, just by making albums that people relate to. Buds maintains Ovlov's undeniable gift for buoyant melodies but with a more world weary approach. The album finds the band turning to their music to make sense of life, relationships, what's worth holding on to and what needs to be left behind - all housed within the band's signature cacophony of Big Muff pedals and infectious hooks. The album finds the band stretching out in new directions, taking different approaches to their songwriting and welcoming guest vocals from Jordyn Blakely (Smile Machine, Stove), Alex Gehring (Ringo Deathstarr), and Erin McGrath (Dig Nitty). But in the context of former Ought frontman Tim Darcy’s latest project, the economic term speaks to an artistic outlook as well. Joined by fellow ex-Ought bassist Ben Stidworthy and drummer Evan Cartwright (U.S. Girls, The Weather Station), the trio’s debut album addresses modern anxieties wrought by technology in a world on the brink, bringing their imagistic worldview to the present. Cola’s sleek sound fits in with the melodic side of contemporary post-punk, with sharper hooks and more succinct songwriting than the members’ past work. What remains is Darcy's charismatic spoken-sung drawl, picking up right where his last band left off. Before announcing their split in 2021, Ought refined their approach to contemplative, cathartic art-rock across three albums. On the quartet’s emotionally raw 2014 debut, Darcy’s voice strained like a young David Byrne searching for something to believe in. By 2015’s Sun Coming Down, their songs grew longer and their lyrics more repetitive, with the snarled delivery of Mark E. Smith. Darcy tried out a Roy Orbison quiver on his 2017 solo album, and on Ought’s final LP, he was accompanied by a 70-person choir. No such embellishments appear on Deep in View, as the three musicians strip their songs to skeletal essentials.

In that sense, Cola has a few things in common with the Smile, the Radiohead side project featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. Both bands formed in the shadow of their members’ better known projects and emerged with a familiar, streamlined sound. “So Excited” was the first song that Darcy, Stidworthy, and Cartwright wrote together in late 2019, its choruses ringing with the disaffected catchiness of the Strokes. After the pandemic hit, their in-person recordings were replaced by file trading over Google Drive, though it’s impossible to tell the difference. Sandwiching the meat of the song between off-kilter instrumental passages, “Fulton Park” touches on feelings of disconnection. As its choruses fall apart, Darcy sings about being “pulled over for imitating landscapes,” an imaginary world he escaped to during his loneliest moments in lockdown. Darcy’s lyrics have always been concerned with human connection, but these songs were written from a more reclusive perspective than Ought’s grandiose epics. “Mint” describes his solitary experiences making tea, dusting his record shelves, and pacing the halls. It feels like both a cry for help and an admission of self-sabotage when he sings “I’d call someone/I don’t call anyone.” On “Water Table” Darcy sounds just as alone, becoming one with technology while he stops worrying about going extinct. Cartwright’s caveman drum beat, without the use of cymbals, leaves a lot of space for the lyrics, as do his martial snare rolls on “Gossamer,” propelling one of the album’s most evocative lines: “I feel abrasions like a seawall feels the rain.” It’s interesting to hear the multiple demos of “Degree,” which Cola have released alongside the album version. The twinkly guitar riffs that made it to the final cut are undeniably pleasant, but I found myself wishing they would have kept some of the droning organs, echoing drum machines, and sputtering breakbeats that appeared in earlier renditions. The uniformity of the album’s first nine songs becomes clear by the time they reach closer “Landers,” switching out their minimalist rock arrangement for moody pianos and soft drum brushes. Cola haven’t reinvented the wheel, but these subtle experiments suggest they still have boundaries to push."

Deep in View is the debut album from former Ought members Tim Darcy (vocals, guitar) and Ben Stidworthy (bass) alongside Evan Cartwright (drums). Titled after philosopher Alan Watts’ anthology of the same name, the record is built on a foundation of elegant guitar grooves and knotty rhythms, offering commentary on modern life and technology through curious lyrical vignettes, where quotidian objects and scenes are never just as they seem. Deep In View is equally a product of introspective songwriting as it is a consideration of the abstract landmarks of an increasingly media-mediated society. It also presents the most concise and melodic songs Darcy and Stidworthy have written to date. “I love when I find a record that has many different angles from which it can be approached,” Darcy explains. The band’s affinity for polysemy is first-and-foremost a chord struck in the name Cola, which most obviously is the fizzy beverage that Darcy deadpans is ”bound by laws older than man to poison most ordinary life on earth” in closing track “Landers”, but also can be traced back to a term in poetics as well as an acronym about social security that refers to “Cost of Living Adjustment”. Cola is also about drinking in the endless crispness of a streamlined (and streamed) world, and the often unsettling sense of satisfaction and emptiness that subsequently sets in. Fundamentally, this record is about passion and what happens to a person when they find themselves increasingly encountering a passionless landscape of consumption. This peeling back of layers is integral to both Cola’s mindset as well as their worldview, which despite a claustrophobic time in the making sees them joyfully exploring new realms as musicians. Cola started collaborating in fall 2019 when Darcy and Stidworthy, both formerly of Ought, reached out to their friend Cartwright, who they had frequently met on the road while he was drumming with various other projects. “It wasn’t the post-Ought band right off the bat,” Darcy says, “we really just took time to enjoy the process of collaborating and writing songs together.” The band’s organic chemistry solidified quickly after a few sessions of jamming in-person. Then, as the pandemic began, they were forced to decamp and write songs separately. Working in solitude ended up becoming a “defining color as well as a barrier” to the album, says Darcy. He notes that he wrote the lyrics to “Fulton Park” as a “dream landscape”, a sort of alternative to the frustration and depression he was experiencing at the time. The imposed isolation of writing at home led Stidworthy (who helped compose the album’s guitar parts and plays the piano on “Landers”) to “create little worlds with the songs”. The keen brushstrokes of all three members combined feels languidly tactile, replete with profound meaning that is almost archeological in its sense of economy and personal touch. This sense of relaxed exploration could only occur because of the mutual trust between the trio: Stidworthy adds, “I could go really far in cultivating a mood for a demo and send it to them and know that it could only improve.” Meanwhile, Cartwright (who also plays guitar on the project and coded Supercollider synth parts in the studio), found that he was subliminally incorporating drum ideas and patterns from when he first started playing as a teen, embedded deep in his muscle memory. The resulting record delights in its aversion to superficiality. Although Darcy’s characteristically wry voice remains front-and-center, shifting from decisive to distressed and detached, his lyrical invocations remain only the first key to a much more intricate universe of sound and longing. Individual tracks often feel like small revelations, and each element contributes to a streamlined and yet poetically expansive set of meanings, as the rhythms of the punchy and exuberant guitar parts, urgent basslines, and unexpected drum patterns all tangle with each other in an elegant dance. Much greater than the sum of its parts, Deep in View is an album of artful and energetic post-punk that sparks novel interpretations with every listen, like an object that takes on new shape with each angle from which you hold it. credits released May 20, 2022 Written by Tim Darcy & Ben Stidworthy Supercollider, Guitar (Blank Curtain) & Drums by Evan Cartwright Guitar, Vocals and Lyrics by Tim Darcy Bass, Guitar & Keys by Ben Stidworthy Recorded by Valentin Ignat Mixed by Gabe Wax Mastered By Harris Newman Artwork & Layouts by Katrijn Oelbrandt

“I love when I find a record that has many different angles from which it can be approached,” Darcy explains. This discovery would be distilled down to the best of these recordings and eventually released as a 2CD set titled Preludes released on May 1, 2007. When the album was released it featured sixteen unreleased recordings from Zevon's personal archives, as well as six never-before released songs and a five-part 2000 interview with KGSR's Jody Denberg. This release will be pressed for the first time on black vinyl. This double LP set features all of the exclusive bonus tracks as well as a beautiful 20-page perfect bound book, all packaged in a hardbound slipcase. released May 2022
Preludes by Warren Zevon
