The Goodnight Loving Supper Club is another milestone in that legend, expanding on their already classic sound of country- and folk-laced rock ‘n roll by forging head-long into psychedelia, surf, spaghetti western, and anything else exotic enough to send your neurons into an electrified dance of pop induced pleasure. With this their new album, GOODNIGHT LOVING follow in the footsteps of The Great American Rock & Roll Bands (ie. Like all great bands around for more than an album or two, they're maturing and pioneering, effortlessly weaving in ideas from unlikely sources to color their songs in ways that seem strange at first, but then obvious upon reflection. This is immediately apparent from the moment the needle drops, moving brusquely between 60's British invasion-style psychedelia and twangy folk melancholy, to jangly barnstormers and songs of dark, bittersweet paranoia effortlessly and naturally. Along the album's path we are treated to brief forays into tragic 50's pop a la Del Shannon, Ennio Morricone on Mars instrumentals, nods to Roger Miller, and sugary, mind-warping harmonic Nuggets.

Having toured Australia, Europe, and North America and released a string of full lengths and EPs, GOODNIGHT LOVING are prolific without sacrificing quality and consistent without stagnating. DIRTNAP RECORDS. The Steve Adamyk Band are a bunch of obnoxious, rowdy, "kids" from Ottawa, Ontario. While the name would automatically draw comparison to a blues, jazz or rock band given the layout, make no mistake; the Steve Adamyk Band are a punk band. The SAB play trash-pop inspired by seventies punk, the skinny tie bands of the eighties and nineties garage rock. From the ashes of Million Dollar Marxists (Gearhead Records) and Sedatives (Deranged Records), the group was born out of necessity - a whack load of orphan songs with no band to call home. Frustrated playing in bands that would eventually call it quits, Adamyk formed a band that could have an endless timeline, even if the name is outside of the standard band name zone. Releasing two European singles before their first live performance, the SAB would go on to unload 4 seven inch singles and an LP in 2010. The self-titled LP in question sold out its initial pressing in three months and received rave reviews, including being hailed as Ben Weasel's favourite album of 2010. The following year, the SAB toured Europe, performed at SXSW and recorded their sophomore LP "Forever Won't Wait" to be unleashed by Portland, OR's Dirtnap Records closing in on the end of the year. The current lineup was cemented when Drew Fredrichsen (Leg Hounds, Jetty Boys) took over on guitar and backing vocals. The band released its debut single, "Beat Beat Beat" b/w "Crybaby", on Bachelor Records in 2009 and a year later issued its full-length debut Sweet Songs of the Sugar Stems on Bachelor and Dusty Medical Records. Those of us who'd been long awaiting an heir apparent to The Shivvers and Nikki and the Corvettes literally jumped for joy when we heard Sweet Songs, spending the subsequent months dancing in the streets and angrily rebuking local radio stations for failing to play "I Gotta Know". Released at the tail end of 2012 by Screaming Apple Records (Germany) and Dream On Records (Japan), Can't Wait now gets an American release on Dirtnap. This terrific LP shows "growth" in all the best ways. Without abandoning its signature honeyed melodies and high-spirited candy pop style, the band has made a more mature and consistent album that's definitely its best to date. The production has been stepped up another notch, and every song sounds like a hit. If you missed the singles "Greatest Pretender" and "Like I Do", they're here in all their infectious glory. But it's the more melancholy tracks that really showcase Betsy Heibler's development into one of the finest songwriters working today. Songs like "Make Up Your Mind" and the gorgeous "Love You To Pieces" are steeped in the timeless traditions of Brill Building and British Invasion pop, yet feel entirely fresh in the year 2013. Even when the songs themselves are not exactly happy, there's something about the Sugar Stems' music that just makes you feel good. No sophomore jinx here, folks. The band began in New Orleans in 2009 when Louie (Royal Pendletons, Persuaders, Kajun SS, etc.) and his guitar slinging pal Julien Friend recruited drummer Aaron Hill and bassist Bennett Bartley. A 7" on Douchemaster Records and tours of the Midwest, the West Coast, and Europe followed soon after. Benny Divine (Wizzard Sleeve) replaced Bartley on bass shortly after the release of the band's debut album Painted White in June 2011. With its lineup solidified and a rougher sound cultivated, the band was just starting to hit its stride. Last year's superb "(I'm Gonna) Love You Back To Life" EP on HoZac was a brief taste of what Missing Monuments were capable of, and now the band truly delivers the goods on its sizzling second LP. The words "power pop" always seem to come up whenever Louie Bankston is involved, and not without good reason. But that's just one element of many in what proves to be a righteous mix of sounds.

Missing Monuments play gritty rock n' roll with a distinctly Southern flavor - blending in hints of pop, garage, soul, oldies, and even hard rock. Songs like the fireball opener "Answer The Call" and the storming "Crash Landing" capture the unrelenting two-guitar energy of the band's live shows, while "Super Hero" is just the latest in a long line of perfect Loomis pop gems. Whether they're getting you up and dancing ("Another Girl") or breaking your heart with ballads ("Tru Luv"), Missing Monuments have the chops and the songs that cannot be beat. And lyrically and vocally, this is some of the most passionate and personal material Louie has turned out in years. Produced by the Marked Men's Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke, Bras is a major departure from the '77 pop/punk feel of 2011's terrific Kings of the Weekend. This time the band brings a tougher, harder-edged sound and takes on a wider variety of musical styles. While still very much in the classic vein of Texan garage/punk, Bad Sports are also bringing to mind the heyday of New York City punk. With hints of Dead Boys snarl, Dictators thump, and even some artier Lou Reed/Television leanings, this record finds the trio refining its songwriting chops and rocking harder than ever. The album's got a little bit of everything - from booming Cheap Trick style power pop to straight-up catchy garage punk to grimy proto-punk not far removed from Orville's other band OBN IIIs. And while Bras builds on the foundation of previous records, quite frankly it blows away anything else the band has done to date. Scorching tracks like "Washed Up" and "Race To The Bottom" beg to be played at obnoxiously loud volumes, while "Nothing In This World" might be the best pop song you hear this year. something equally stunning. Frontman and chief songwriter Jeff Burke (The Marked Men, The Reds, The Potential Johns) has certainly done more than enough to earn that kind of expectation and pressure. But Silent Kill, which finds Burke backed by Marked Men compatriot Mark Ryan and two-thirds of Bad Sports (Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford), does more than merely match the virtues of its self-titled predecessor.

Radioactivity's first LP was rightly hailed as a sort of sequel to The Marked Men's remarkable run through the first decade of the millennium, and while Silent Kill bears the unmistakable hallmarks of that band's tightly wound "Denton sound," Radioactivity can now lay claim to a sonic territory of their very own. Burke's distinctive hooks dig as deep as ever, but the scope of his vision has expanded, and now that the Burke/Ryan/Fried/Rutherford all-star team has had some time to cohere, Radioactivity can do all sorts of damage in less than thirty minutes.

Although the twelve songs on Silent Kill abide one strict rule--providing garage punk pleasure at all costs--Radioactivity bend that mandate in myriad ways. I had a guy wonder to me, once, whether we all didn't have big record collections so we'd know what to do; I told him if anything it was so we'd know what not to do, but that's not it either. It doesn't matter what your music brings to mind if that's all you're out to do- bring what's already out there to the mind of your listener. How cheap to exist as only reference, when you know that doing so will allow the gaps in your bargain facsimile to be filled in by your listeners' old favorites, playing on the jukebox of the mind while your pseudo-irony-dipped cassette reels around the boombox fountain. Shakespeare even said "There is nothing new'' quite a while before Superchunk ripped him off so why force it? We're all bound to similar sounds and states, a finite set of whatever rules we oh-so-inevitably choose, made infinite by the powers of imagination and music and love and hate etc. One foot in front of the other, then - one note, one step, one explosion and how that forces you to react to just that last and that possible next, how to prepare with only what we have in front of us, our minds and vicinities cleared by the resultant possibilities. We'd all play jazz for sure if we hadn't been ruined by TV. Our whole lives lived punk in some way, each of us in our own interpretation. Obviously the music follows.
