A gig that was proof of how music can grow organically, by itself, once it has taken root in the heart of its people. VÅNNA INGETS music speaks volumes. It was clear from the opening track of "Allvar" and even more so with the band's second album. Produced by Jari Haapalainen (THE BEAR QUARTET, KAJSA GRYTT, INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, ELDKVARN...) in legendary "Varispeed Studios" where THE HIVES recorded most of their records, the band recorded everything in the best, the old school way... drums, guitars, organ, bass and vocals live straight down on 2" 16 ch tape. Where "Allvar" found power in its urgent and relentless delivery, "Ingen Botten" is a more nuanced affair. Sharp guitar riffs and shimmering organ melodies are woven together with an attentive and dynamic rhythm section. The band has also taken down the tempo in places and left room to move within the arrangements. But above all , there is a refined approach that goes beyond merely changing for the sake of change. VÅNNA INGET knows where they stand and nurture their songs to a maturity that makes them unique in a meeting between raw, punkish nerve and melodic sensibility. They possess the ability to turn claustrophobic themes of confinement and desperation into something that feels uplifting and liberating.
Above all, Karolina Engdahl's vocals have grown to reach even higher levels of poignant intensity. She sings with a powerful, yet brittle, force. "Ingen Botten" fulfils the high expectations surrounding Vånna Inget during the two years since their debut. The Cowboys grow up! And they grow in number too, with CHRIS KRAMER Kramer (NOBUNNY/SLUSHY) joining the brilliant MARK MCWHIRTER for a killer guitar team. Vocalist/songwriter KEITH HARMAN alters his whooping nasal-punk a bit, with a more naturalistic approach when it fits the mood. His songwriting skills are mighty. ZACKERY WORCEL (bass) and JORDAN TARANTINO (drums) provide a solid, relentless groove. There are 16 hooky gems in this new LP. To compare the Cowboys’ songs to Pete Townshend and Ray Davies was no casual thing up front. Check 'Doghouse Rag' for primo late-60s Kink-kwality pop. Then there’s the insanely hooky 'Some Things Never Change,' with its nod to early 70s Sparks. This song should be a smash hit RIGHT NOW! And dig 'Bodie, Don’t Jump' in all its bubblegum glory! The deceptively short 'Deuce' with its 70s-style pop exploding into VU-like noise, etc. It’s very cool to see a modern R&R band progress in the true sense of the word--to mature and seek new horizons. I’ve personally seen them when they opened the very first show by the reunited Gizmos in 2014, and then when they played with us again in Chicago 2017, to this new album. It’s an impressive climb. Please love them. In exchange for your heart, they will give you sixteen songs from their new album, which show off songwriting and musicianship not often seen in the world of underground "punk" music that they spin through. This is really a misnomer, because The Cowboys are not punk, and they're not rock, and they're not country. They are the distillation of five hopeless romantics' love of music channeled through the well-oiled machine of seven years of experience as an independent band. They are Indiana's best kept secret, so get in while the getting's good.

"The album runs all across the board with genre and style. You can find Brian Wilson's 60s pop, Billy Joel's storytelling, Sheer Mag's 70s riffs, and even the best song ever to have not been written by Bruce Springsteen. The magic of it, though, is that each of these outings across America's history of rock music is not just a mimicry of a style. They all sound distinctly Cowboys. This is a testament to their skilled songwriting, Keith Harman's punk-by-way-of-country voice, and probably the band's time spent slinging covers early in their career. Their goal is not to fit a genre, it's to play the best song they can.

"And songs they have a-plenty. The album starts with the one-two punch of the punk-by-way-of-a-high-school-dance number, “Open Sores,” and the driving “Stillborn Genius”. This is a bit of a feint, because they immediately slow it down on the 60s pop crooner, “Take My Flower and Run,” and the piano ballad, “Doghouse Rag,” which escapes the danger of feeling trite by the sheer magic of Harman's vocal talent. This pattern of hop-skipping around tempos and genres continues throughout, and the songs blaze by with an average run time of two minutes a pop, all of which makes a strong case for this being the best front-to-back album of 2019.

"The best of these songs create truly exceptional experiences out of seemingly disparate parts. The chorus of “Female Behavior Book” is absolutely electric with Beach Boys-esque melodies and a driving punk rhythm section. Album closer, “Deuce,” takes The Strokes to a field party at a friend's barn and dips it in aching teenage nostalgia. The finest track of them all, though, is the afore-mentioned Bruce Springsteen rocker, featuring, of all things, a saxophone. We are writing 2018 and we started 1998, this is the blueprint and the easiest shooting-fish-in-the barrel of an autobiographical ALIEN SNATCH! release. We would have released this PHONE JERKS LP any year of out label history, but where have they been the last twenty years? If Greg Lowery would run RIP OFF Records instead of real estates, this would be his condo of choice! Their power pop origin and band name phone schtick is highly reminiscent to ring-ring BUSY SIGNALS to MARK SULTAN´s BBQ taking a message to hang BLONDIE after the beep. Phone Jerks have released an album? On Alien Snatch Records?! One of my favorite bands put out a record on one of my all-time favorite labels, and nobody knew anything about it until a week ago?! Now that was a fiercely-guarded secret! Respect! Alien Snatch Records has been setting the standard for what a punk rock label ought to be for 20 years now. From assembling a roster including the likes of the Kidnappers, Real Losers, Fevers, Yum Yums, Minds, and Leg Hounds in its early 2000s heyday to releasing brilliant music by current-day bands such as Freak Genes and The #1s, Alien Snatch has remained a go-to for any fan of garage-punk and power pop. Moncton, New Brunswick's mighty Phone Jerks could not be a more fitting addition to the Alien Snatch family. Their debut LP hearkens back to countless beloved garage-punk LPs of the '90s and early 2000s. And I gotta tell you the thing is absolutely KILLER! Upon hearing "Nothing There", you just might find yourself convinced that The Rip Offs have gotten back together! Alien Snatch honcho Daniel has astutely pointed out that he could have released this album in any year of the label's history. These tunes are that timeless. Of course Phone Jerks sound like a band that could have been peers with Loli and the Chones, The Metros, Teengenerate, etc. Yet they also align perfectly with modern-day greats like Gino & The Goons and Sick Thoughts. This, my friends, is garage-punk the way it ought to be: trashy, lo-fi, and intentionally devoid of originality. Why are there not more bands like this in 2018?! Being four upstanding Canadians who value your hard-earned dollar, Phone Jerks have delivered almost entirely brand-new material for this debut album (along with covers of "Revolution" by Australia's X and "Violence, Anarchy, Baby, Mother, Daddy-O, Dig" by Newfoundland punk legends Da Slyme). No tracks from the Goodbye Boozy 7" have been repeated, and only two songs re-appear from the band's demo tape. The instant you dig into "Bitchiker", you will find yourself fondly recalling a time when every new Rip Off Records release was an event worth celebrating. And come on: how can an album that begins with a song about killing someone not be the best record of the year?! These songs are all so ripping and catchy and tremendously fun to listen to. This is an album that you just have to crank super loud. And half the fun of this record is going through it track by track and asking, "Who are they ripping off here?"! The fact that Phone Jerks have three different lead singers makes it all that much cooler. Emily, Tyler, and Brian each bring something unique to the table (and you know, they all seem intent on smashing that table). The production (kudos Dave Belliveau and James O'Toole!) is spot-on for what budget rock ought to be. You know how modern-day reviewers are so fond of using "crackling" as an adjective? This album is crackling. Literally. So why aren't there more bands like Phone Jerks in 2018? I don't know, but maybe there will be after their debut album makes the rounds! Canada is ahead of the curve as always (especially in Moncton, where they observe the Atlantic Time Zone). Under the name Holy Sons, as well as with bands Om, Grails, and Lilacs and Champagne, Amos harnesses boundless sonic textures to embellish delicately crafted songs, he plays the bulk of the instruments and sings the majority of the vocals throughout the album, and is joined on a few pieces by drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth). His music balances cues from classic and indie rock traditions with tenderness and sense of foreboding through unparalleled artistry. Holy Sons’ first double album Raw and Disfigured showcases Amos’ mastery of songcraft through a seemingly impossible combination of subtle yet potent gestures, bold arrangements, and resolute vulnerability. As he backs up, the beauty comes forward. most jazz just really ain't my bag so I’ve never spent much time with his albums but you'll find me on the floor near the front of the stage at the funked out workouts (and reflective passages) of this live shows, and this album warms my inner spaces like flames in the fireplace warm the cold interiors of a house on a December night. While folks who know jazz can probably make comparisons and pick out many influences, the influence of music of Quincy Jones, MFSB, Grover Washington, Al Green, and Isaac Hayes seem to make their way into the grooves. He's also keen enough to bring some Chitown into the sounds, and the influence of Curtis Mayfield (and probably some other Windy City musicians) seem to be present. The Vince Guaraldi influence comes out and helps makes this perfect for the winter months: like soundtracks of Guaraldi, this album captures the hope, joy and melancholy of the season. Beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable, this perfect for that last album of the night (or year) as you think about the day and slip into slumber. -- winch (green Now, on his soul-baring solo debut Luca, the Texan and The Black Angel’s singer journey is taking an equally hypnotic detour along the wild trails of his indigenous homestead. Driven by the force of nature, each phase of life is celebrated through songs of love, hope, human connection whilst navigating perils of modern society and tentatively facing the darkness. It’s a record fuelled by memories of an upbringing in the strange, unique paradise of his father’s plant nursery in Seabrook, Texas by the waterfront of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Native American sounds that would drift through the garden’s hidden speakers, ricocheting off multi-coloured pottery mazes of curiosities from across the world. Casting shades of deeply personal wide-eyed innocence and the darker realms of paranoia, Luca has its sights set on the near and distant future. Angular guitars and sharp synth notes float atop a raw rhythm section, while Lira Mondal's effervescent vocals truly define Sweeping Promises' sound. Not so much in the literal sense — although, yes, sometimes in the literal sense — but in a thematic one. Singer Zach Otto writes unflinchingly about personal shortcomings and toxic character flaws, and the toll of leading a selfish life. He’s an absolutely rabid presence. If Stephen King’s Cujo fronted a band, it might sound something like this. And while the band (which includes Harrison Colby, Connor LaMue and Gregg Twigg) plays this music for thrills — every song is short, fast and ripping — they never romanticize its subject matter. Otto’s brutish growl only emphasizes how grotesque the sentiments driving these songs are. The result is a pointed inversion of punk’s rebel tropes, a takedown of the id-driven mindset that rock ‘n’ roll has historically glorified. For every badass raising hell, Otto’s lyrics remind us, there’s some poor soul on the receiving end of it. Sex Scenes’ new album invites listeners to laugh at humanity’s worst instincts, and maybe even identify with them a little. First off, this is very audibly (and thrillingly) a punk rock record. 'Glitch' and 'Danse Sauvage' are sure to set crowds into a frenzy. Angela and Dave take turns adding vocals across the album's 10 tracks, sometimes combining to the listener's delight like on the prickly chorus of 'Immerse'.‍ Angela's bouncy, sometimes creeping vocals are unstoppable. They spark flames on 'Touch Too Much', inspiring me to go out into the city streets wearing a snakeskin leotard in order to climb a sky scraper while screaming "NOW IT'S TIME FOR A TOUCH TOO MUCH YEAH." Angela also pounds out rhythms on a minimal floor-tom + snare setup. Her vocals and drums combined are enough to start a stampede. Once you bring in Dave Grolsch's hot-rod guitar the Earth begins to rattle. 'Rock and Roll Specimen' sounds like someone strapped Chuck Berry to a jetpack and launched him into the stratosphere. 'Immerse' is like the creature from the black lagoon was handed an electric guitar and an overdriven amp. A highlight for me is 'What's Yr Problem'. Hearing the riff is is like getting slapped in the face by an electric eel. Towards the end of this song, the song is deconstructed into base elements as it tangles with hydraulic robot noises. Then horns proudly announce the return of the fully fleshed-out chorus before the song sputters out into static echoes. It's an epic battle between a rock & roll deity and a gigantic space robot (I would watch that movie). Faster than you know - we became brothers and sisters from other mothers and misters (Must be that 'way too close to Equator' vibe our origins have in common), shared the stage several times with Tanning Bats and always shared the common devotion to 'kill from the heart' On one other of these grey boring days at the end of the year, here in Berlin, if the sky could speak, it would literally be yelling again and again - "This is going nowhere" (huh and look at us now). I get a very surprising call that very quickly snaps me out of the monotone fatigue, it's my friend Angela from Nunofyrbeeswax, who's also based in Berlin (thank god im not innit alone) and she's telling me that they are done recording their new album she told me about recently. luckily enough on that same phone call I'm asked to join and co-produce their wonders while im mixing it too. Familiar names will come up when you’re listening – Joy Division, Bauhaus, Iceage when they were good, Clan of Xymox in a brick fight, etc etc – and they out-pace and out-intense ‘em all. But ultimately Droids Blood uphold the fine traditions of all their city’s best punk by sounding like no one other than themselves.
