That precision is even more pronounced throughout ‘Pure Drivel’ as drummer\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eDave Mello\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(\u003cstrong\u003eOperation Ivy\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSchlong\u003c\/strong\u003e) has a style that feels a bit more effortless than drummers previous. If you want to see the album as any kind of ‘throwback’ beyond its songwriting, flick on a pair of deeply rose-colored glasses and pretend this isn’t a professional record from way old pros.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"That old feeling and this new fidelity is the knife that the war-disturbed veteran would use to slit their wet-nurse’s throat before escape and it is a glorious sort of violence when it works. My favorite example might be the return of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDischarge\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ecirca 2002 but, it is all the more exciting when those names we know crank out a new original, so I appreciate that this certifiable ‘supergroup’ don’t appear to be screaming ‘remember us, you fucking cunts?’ at any point. What I love about ‘Pure Drivel’ is that you’re getting a raw point of view, a personality and an attitude that persists by ‘classic’ means but isn’t a forced chunk of worship. The tracklist is a minefield for the overly serious listener and a few key moments will diffuse anyone who’d show up to a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKicker\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ealbum looking for a call to arms or revolution; Instead\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ePete\u003c\/em\u003e‘s a storyteller, a man of many gripes who’ll have just as many jokes to tell, and this comes up front with the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBiafra\u003c\/em\u003e-esque “Mrs. Arnold” and doesn’t let up ’til the excessive end of “Goodnight and Fuck Off”. That mix of California hardcore punk and UK ’82 should feel like some sort of long forgotten mid-80’s record that has been remastered for 2019 and I’m grateful they haven’t phoned in the songwriting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"I’m still an irritable shit, though, and there were a couple tracks here that I’d ended up skipping over beyond the tenth or so spin (“Goodnight and Fuck Off”, “Wankers on the Bus”). I did recognize the familiar voice as soon as the needle hit the groove. Vocalist Darrel Wojick also sings in a side project called Suede Razors, a glam and pub rock band that has released a slew of great singles that I’ve enjoyed over the last couple of years. The mission of Harrington Saints is much more straightforward. As a matter of fact, the name of the record pretty much sums it up. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\"If you’re going to call your album \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e1,000 Pounds of Oi!\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, it better have a hell of a lot of oi on it. I’m happy to report that it does. You’ll hear classic influences like Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects and the Oppressed. The title track opens the record with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e“They called us thousand pounds of oi!\/When we first hit the stage”\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. These are five good sized boys. They might be up to 1,100 pounds of oi by now! The majority of the record is political. “Red State” and “Fremont Train” take aim squarely at conservative America. As a matter of fact, “State of Emergency”, “Broken Windows”, “Now More Than Ever” and “Rise Up” are all calls to action. Harrington Saints are certainly more left leaning than many of their street punk peers. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\"“Pressure” and “Counter Attack (Bread \u0026amp; Roses Pt. 2)” offer more standard oi fare and talk about the struggle of the working man. The only light hearted song, other than maybe the title track, is “Rock-N-Rolla”. Not surprisingly, that’s the one that sounds most like a Suede Razors tune. If passionate, politically charged oi and street punk is your thing, you should definitely check out Harrington Saints. If you’re like me, it will be better late than never. While folks who know jazz can probably make comparisons and pick out many influences, the influence of music of Quincy Jones, MFSB, Grover Washington, Al Green, and Isaac Hayes seem to make their way into the grooves. He's also keen enough to bring some Chitown into the sounds, and the influence of Curtis Mayfield (and probably some other Windy City musicians) seem to be present. The Vince Guaraldi influence comes out and helps makes this perfect for the winter months: like soundtracks of Guaraldi, this album captures the hope, joy and melancholy of the season.
