I used traditional instrument pat- terns, sounds intimately linked to oriental instruments, all the while using my electronic touch composed of drone/ ambient and sound distortions. This is the result of a year of reflection and increased exploration of new frontiers in the studio, which has gradually evolved into a desire to make an album concrete. Recording, mixing and mastering were once again handled by Yuri Pierini, whose work helped define the raw but melodic sound of the trio. The influences remain similar too, rooted in garage rock, power pop and DIY energy. What changes, perhaps, is the songwriting: the new songs feel more reflective in tone. Even the brightest and most open moments carry subtle traces of melancholy, small shadows hiding beneath the surface. For SNÜFF, the DIY spirit remains central to everything they do. In today’s collapsing record market, DIY practices are often a necessity rather than a romantic choice. But for the band it is also about intention and shared decisions. Each step is shaped through discussion and the meeting of different sensitivities within the trio. DIY, for them, is not about rigid rules or obsessive control. It is about care and attention, about staying involved in every part of their artistic path. Honest, slightly crooked, melodic and raw in equal measure. FFO: Shannon & the Clams • Sheer Mag • early Pixies • Screaming Females, and all the underground garage-pop-punk

This catches this Texas band in their prime…ten plus years of knocking you out…a decade deep into their history and sounding hungry as ever…hungry as hell…watch your ears, they might just chomp them off. Vital vinyl. Check it out! It's one of a kind. Some might note the 1980s influence on this band, but in the 20th century, most decades were clearly created in the previous...post-war rhythm & blues by Black artists (along with a bit of the hillbilly of the 1940s) created the sounds of the 1950s...nearly anything in the 1990s had been done (better?) in the 1980s...and while the 1980s had many things going on, beyond hardcore and hip-hop, a dominant sound helped define the decade, and that sound had been created the decade before...not just with the underground bands (because it's hard to argue influence if few knew of the music) but with well-known artists like Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, Sparks, Nerves, Kinks, Tubeway Army, The Cars, Talking Heads, Cheap Trick, Reed, Iggy, Bowie, Devo, Blondie...and to me, more than the 1980s (or even the 1970s via the 1980s), Drakulas maybe sound inspired by some of those originators of the 1970s...without sounding at all retro in any way...they charge ahead...and while plenty of examples exist, for punk rock, it's not so common that a punk band creates fictions and imagined histories so elaborate that they read like a novel...maybe risky territory for a punk band from Texas (or anywhere), but when you take risks and pull it off, it hits you like a hammer...so crank it, and pound them spikes in my chest. This catches this Texas band in their prime…ten plus years of knocking you out…a decade deep into their history and sounding hungry as ever…hungry as hell…watch your ears, they might just chomp them off. Their influences are vast—dispatched with more playful ease than a trio of string instruments is typically approached with, and just as likely to be found in the cloud-obscured mountains of Donegal, the low-rent cacophony of a midwestern basement, or the revelatory expanse of the Nurse With Wound list as in the storied halls of the academy. Touchstones and areas of interest aside, the main thing that Johnson, Kohl, and Stewart engage with in BODY SOUND is listening and reacting.

“Improvisation has a special capacity to facilitate a kind of sonic intimacy,” says Kohl. “We're making choices together in the moment. We're creating time together before thought enters the equation. It's an incredibly intimate and intuitive space to share, and feels like the heart center of this music and this practice.”

The trio’s approach to improvisation is very much embedded in and informed by their Chicago music community. The city’s ongoing improvised music tradition, which can envelop every genre imaginable, is one where a working musician’s ideas can evolve at a near-constant pace and where anything can be explored in the name of sound. And with sound, there’s always space to consider.

Where will the improvisation take place?
How will that space shape the sounds being made?
How will that sound resonate in the dim light of a small neighborhood bar?
How will it sound in the chromatic refractions of an ornate church?
Can it feel different-yet-equally perfect?

For Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, and Macie Stewart the answer to the last question is yes, definitely.

Stewart: Our quest as a crew is to explore space and every iteration of what that can mean, be it physical space, emotional space, sonic space, etc. Space is an instrument.

Johnson: It’s more than the acoustic properties of the recording spaces. Our bodies, emotions, and relationships show up in those spaces with affordances and limitations for the music each time. We are vibrating beings, sensitive and expressive, an amoeba of physical and psychic pressures with specific resonances in time and space.

Kohl: The space we’re in always feels like a collaborator in this trio more than in other contexts. I can always feel us all responding to where we are and the resonances that live there.”

On BODY SOUND, the trio worked with International Anthem engineer and album co-producer Dave Vettraino to translate the sonic specificities of three recording locations: International Anthem studios on Iron Street (Chicago), Shirk Studios (Chicago), and Boyd’s Jig and Reel (Knoxville, TN, as part of Big Ears Festival). Vettraino also brought a deep knowledge of tape manipulation and a willingness to experiment. “All it took was for one of us to say, ‘What if that was a loop?’, and he was already setting up the reel-to-reel,” says Johnson of the album’s post-production, which leaned heavily into their shared love of saturated tape sounds.

That trust, it seems, was already there. In addition to the communal criss-cross inherent in sharing their Chicago home base, the trio worked with Vettraino on Stewart’s 2025 solo effort When the Distance Is Blue. It was her debut on International Anthem but far from her first appearance in the label’s catalog as a player. Ditto for Kohl and Johnson, whose collaboration and friendship with the label goes back years. Taken as a whole, we could argue that this most recent collaboration, the tape-manipulated fried beauty documented on BODY SOUND, has been a long time coming.

In the context of this work, tape sound is much more than a mixing treatment or a production tactic. Here Johnson, Kohl, and Stewart are using variations on the medium to edit and reshape the pieces themselves, employing multiple analog tape machines to reimagine their improvised material into meticulously crafted compositions (“another layer of improvisation,” says Stewart). It’s all a response to the spaces they were originally engaged with, and the use of a highly physical medium like analog tape deepens the spatial engagement of the trio’s work to striking, playful, and organically psychedelic effect.

The resultant BODY SOUND is deep, melancholy, and triumphant, coming across like a kind of lost or amalgamated folk music. It’s certainly part of an ongoing creative continuum, even boasting track titles adapted from Yoko Ono’s classic book of text scores Grapefruit.

The album’s opener “dawn | pulse” puts a morning drone at the threshold of their sound world. This undulating slow roller is a free time drift of bowed tonal clusters respiring in long, melodic swells, and unfurling among wordless singing. Despite the time marker in the title, this piece feels suitable for any part of the day—the morning stretch skyward, the afternoon ambling respite, or the late-nite chillout. Both majorly serene and deceptively avant garde, “dawn | pulse” is a perfect entrée into BODY SOUND.

“laundry | blood” begins with a near-waltz percussive tumble created by a tape loop of Kohl’s barrette-prepared cello. Its soft and eerie triplet propels a deep and snarling viola-cello-violin drone forward à la the doomiest moments of the Berlin School canon or the repetitive outsider glory of Tony Conrad & Faust's Outside the Dream Syndicate. It’s a darkly cinematic take on the ambient ideal for the scarcely visible slow-moving night train chug. You can almost see it roll by.

Some moments feel intentionally disconnected from the performance, instead tied more closely to the concept of LP format listenership: the disintegrated melodic pumps and clomps of “chewing gum”, the body shaking radiator hiss come-apart of “snow | touch”, the otherworldly bass and sub-bass of “stone | piece”.

Across the album’s 11 tracks, each piece manages to keep a foot in both worlds. “burning | counting (sleeping)” begins abruptly with massive bursts of heavily-bowed sawtooth strings looping in real time, creating a near-synthetic feeling. Deep stutter-step freneticism, tape-manipulated and rendered into overlapping moments of dense psychedelia give way to an oncoming long-note tranquility—an improvised cacophony evoking some long dissipated storm-paced Irish folk drone more so than a New Music exercise or a study of Kronos / Reich.

And that seems to be the story with all of the material within BODY SOUND. It’s music with inexplicably broad appeal while maintaining a sort of mysterious outsider quality. Johnson, Kohl, and Stewart have created a stunning album—an exquisitely textured, spatially vivid, wordlessly expressive, sonically multitudinous collection—that manages to decode a slew of high level concepts while clearly and directly speaking to the human impulse. Out of Rome’s underground, Weird Bloom have spent the past years on a relentless European touring run, shaping a sound built for impact. The band operates as a six-headed live force, locked into volume, repetition and physical momentum. That energy sits at the core of the record, channeled into repetition, distortion and fractured hooks. Melodies surface through the noise, and the whole structure moves with the logic of a ritual built on volume and persistence. The band’s glam DNA remains present, reshaped into something rougher and more immediate with a DIY sensibility that keeps every element slightly off-centre and alive. Wrong Time, Wrong Place stands as a record shaped by the road, carried by a band in constant motion, and driven by a clear instinct for impact, pressure and presence. Welcome to the wreckage."

In Europe, order from Wild Honey.

releases May 6, 2026

All songs written by Weird Bloom except for Devil On The Hill written with Matteo Caminoli and Self Nature written with Don Bolles (Hammered Satin / The Germs)

Weird Bloom are Luca Di Cataldo, Adriano Bartoccini, David Comanducci, Mattia Micalich, Lorenzo Masini, Edoardo Elia

This album was recorded in six days at Pom Pom Studio (Rome) by Edoardo Elia
Produced by Luca Di Cataldo w David Comanducci
Mixed by Danilo Silvestri
Mastered by VDSS Studio
Artwork by Luca Di Cataldo
Background photos are 100% vegan and were taken by Eliana Giaccheri
Additional musicians are Giampaolo Speziale, Victoria Reed, Martino Petrella, Marco Di Napoli (Mad Rollers)

FIVE BUCKS / POO POO TALKS – split LP
GREEN NOISE EXCLUSIVE CLEAR VINYL.
IMPORT: WILD HONEY RECORDS (ITALY)
split w/ Five Bucks by Poo Poo Talks
split w/ Poo Poo Talks by FIVE BUCKS
Italy has been quietly building its own restless, DIY undercurrent. Formed in 2022, the all-female quartet have quickly carved out a space for themselves in the city’s ever-restless underground, channelling garage punk grit into something hook-heavy, immediate and unmistakably their own. Their debut album Static captures that ascent in real time. It’s a record that hums with tension and release, where blown-out guitars meet sharp melodic instincts, and where dual vocalists Jamie Radu and Vera circle each other with a restless energy, trading lines, clashing perspectives, then locking together with intent. The effect feels instinctive rather than constructed, as if the songs are unfolding mid-conversation, half-confession, half-confrontation. There’s a tactile sense of place running through the album, the kind you can almost hold in your hands. Montreal after dark, streetlights refracted on wet pavement, cheap beer gone warm, the quiet comedown after the noise. That atmosphere seeps into Static, grounding its punch and propulsion in something lived-in and recognisable, rather than nostalgic for its own sake. Across the record, Taxi Girls lean into a palette that pulls as much from classic rock’n’roll attitude as it does from punk’s raw economy. Big choruses cut clean through the distortion, never losing their bite, while the band’s instinct for rhythm keeps everything moving with a sense of purpose. It’s a sound that nods to the lineage of The Donnas, Joan Jett or Bikini Kill, without settling into pastiche, driven instead by a clear sense of identity and momentum. Lyrically, Static reveals a band unafraid to sit with discomfort. Themes of love, loss and mental health run throughout, threaded with reflections on postpartum depression and the strange gravitational pull of nostalgia. Yet the record resists collapsing under its own weight. What emerges instead is a throughline of self-realisation, a gradual turning outward, where vulnerability becomes a source of strength rather than retreat. That tension between fragility and force is where Static finds its core. It’s a debut that feels both raw and deliberate, capturing a band in the act of defining themselves, not after the fact. There’s catharsis here, certainly, but also something celebratory in the way Taxi Girls push forward, claiming space and meaning it. Having already shared stages with the likes of NOFX, The Hives and Billy Talent, and earning early support from figures such as Iggy Pop, Taxi Girls arrive at Static with momentum behind them. What the album makes clear is that they are not simply riding that wave. They are shaping it. With Static, Taxi Girls step fully into focus. The world could collapse tomorrow (seems probable) and with the rest of us hysterically running around, hands to the heavens, The Nits would be gathered in some cave banging on rocks, strumming rubber bands and putting each other in stitches. 'Cartoon' is littered with classic sound effects swiped from the songs source material, which feels perfectly at home amongst this setting. Even at their most introspective, on song such as 'Waiting Around' and 'Gimmie a Break', the sounds are more suited for the beach than the funeral parlour, and simplicity is still the order of the day. We don’t hear a guitar solo till album closer 'City Line', most of the songs are two to three chords, and the choruses are generally a group chant sure to stick in your skull and crack you up. Itchy & The Nits have spent the last two year’s honing their craft while touring across the US, EU and Japan. In 2020, guitarist and songwriter Jeff Poot practically died. He was found unconscious in his car, parked with the motor running. He’d been there for hours. Jeff suffered a serious brain injury and had half his skull removed. Doctors literally called him a miracle man for pulling through. He had to relearn everything from walking to eating… to sleeping. And somehow, after all that, Jeff started a new band and came back with one of the strongest albums of the year. A lot of their songs grapple with Jeff’s recovery, but other songs are just rippers about stuff like punk houses, getting records in the mail, and shitty landlords.

If you know Jeff, you know he’s a force in the Boston scene. He’s been in great bands like Witches With Dicks, Brain Killer, Sunshine Ward, and many others. He’s also a zine maker and photocopy savant. For Cigarette Camp he teamed up with Uncontrollable Frank (Orange Whip, Ancient Filth, Funeral Cone) on bass and drummers Keith Henderson (Shorebirds) and later Jamie McBaby (Awful Man). Among the rare records high up on the wall—all of them too expensive for us to casually afford—was The Flyboys 12” EP, the first release on Frontier Records that had somehow evaded our awareness. Its bright red and blue cover with silhouetted warplanes remained a mysterious relic staring down at us, until we finally asked to hear it on the store’s turntable. I remember being instantly transfixed by its manic jackhammer rhythm in tandem with pop sheen. Songs like “I Couldn’t Tell,” with delicate harmonies colliding with their pummeling buzzsaw riffs, others with space-age synths driving mini-epics like “Picture Perfect.” Like a lost band that seemed destined for the infamous Beach Blvd. compilation with their brother band The Crowd, but perhaps zigzagging too erratically to be captured into any regional scene.

Despite us being second or third wave punkers, The Flyboys somehow felt like our own personal discovery. But because it was the pre-internet era with no easy way to find any details about them, we’d just ask our friend to climb up there and put the record on every time we came in, until those seven songs became part of our collective DNA. Eventually we found out they were the same band backing up Chris D. on the scorching debut Flesh Eaters 7” (another rare record we revered), so John “Jon Boy” Curry and his crew became cemented as essentials to our gang. And although The Flyboys were mainstays at clubs like The Masque and The Hong Kong Café in the late ’70s, they were one of those bands that got pulled under history’s riptides because of oddly timed happenstance, internecine sabotage, or cliquey associations (or lack thereof).

Three years ago, I met John Curry by fateful accident, really. How many musicians have more than five LPs in them that aren’t shameful at the end of the run, where it’s instantly recognizable as them, and their fire’s still burning unexpected holes in your ears? It’s a rarified place, especially in punk, where the narrative is often, “Their first 7” ruled. They sucked hard after that.” It’s like zines, in a sense. Pretty much anyone can do one. Or a handful. And I applaud the effort, but let’s see how you’re doing when you’ve released your hundredth. When you’re no longer shiny. No longer young. We also talk about the unexpected death of Rick Froberg. The unparalleled grief and pain of losing a lifelong musical partner, the lingering effects of COVID still felt today, and John’s bold agreement to my assertion of him being the GG Allin of ketchup, mustard, and relish. –Todd Taylor

One Punk’s Guide to Volunteering at an Animal Shelter
By Jennifer Federico

Throughout the time I’ve been volunteering at Los Angeles city animal shelters, I’ve realized a lot of people have no idea how they work or what happens inside them. You don’t know until you know.
Nonetheless, when talking to people, or being on the receiving end of their anger, I’m frustrated with some of the misconceptions and straight up falsehoods that people carry with them—and, unfortunately, spread—related to animal shelters.

Although I’ve been volunteering in Los Angeles, California for eight years and volunteered in Oakland for a year before I moved down here, these are the only places where I’ve volunteered at an animal shelter. They began recording the album in 2023 but the international tours caused delays, as did the departure of original bass player Jack Kong in early 2024. New bass player Ethan Stahl (formerly of UK band Chubby and the Gang) came on board a year ago after Jack helped the band finish the tracking process. Initial album sessions took place with Paul Maybury of Rocket Science at his A Secret Location studio, with subsequent tracks recorded with Matt Blach of the Murlocs at Gizz Studios and, in January of this year, with Robin Mukerjee of TV Colours. The band, which features drummer Nadine Muller sharing lead vocals with guitarist Carey Paterson together with guitarists Joseph Imfeld and Austin Haire as well as new bass player Ethan, is known for its powerful three-guitar frontline and melodic twin lead guitar. Band members have recently started spreading themselves out into other bands as well, with Nadine and Ethan joining Josh Hardy of The Chats and The Unknowns in Loose Lips, Joe in The States and Austin in The Judges and his own solo venture, Ozzie Hair.

released 2026

Berliners S.U.G.A.R. are back with their kick-ass trash-compactor lick-laden punk rock n roll, loading it up and riffing it into action. -- winch
S.U.G.A.R. - III by S.U.G.A.R. Instead of tuning to fixed pitches, players adjust their physical proximity to shape the pulse: closer to slow it, farther to quicken it. The piece unfolds as a fragile, collective resonance that often feels as if it rises from the air itself. This exploration, which began with a question about attunement, revealed its irrational zone, a field of resonance where two slightly different frequencies meet and form a third, pulsating sound between them.

The piece operates within this narrow interval, not too far, not too close, producing slow acoustic beatings that vibrate inside the range of human alpha waves. Between the two original played tones, a third tone appears, a sound born out of the relation itself. This emergent voice becomes the sonic manifestation of the relation. The composition, developed in close collaboration with the Berlin-based Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, divides the octave into fifteen unequal parts, positioning the musicians as living group organisms in motion. Each gesture creates delicate changes in time. This type of work demands radical attention and patience within playfulness, as each player tunes their instrument not to fixed frequencies, but to the beating of proximity. To quicken the pulse, they move apart; to slow it down, they move closer.

The result is a piece that listens to itself, breathing through the bodies of its players. At times, the sound seems to emanate not from the instruments but from the air itself: a shared, fragile resonance. Composed and recorded during a time of profound global unrest and war, this work stands as a quiet act of resistance, a music of care and listening amid violence and despair.

released June 5, 2026

Recorded at DOCK 11 EDEN***** 12 – 16 June 2023
Rehearsed in Universe
Played in Victory over the Sun, 2026

Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop
Rebecca Beyer, violin
Mia Bodet, violin
Anna Faber, violin
Mari Sawada, violin
Ildiko Ludwig, viola
Yodfat Miron, viola
Isabelle Klemt, cello
Boram Lie, cello
Sophie Notte, cello
Fatima Agüero, bass
Recording and mixing: Daniel Meir
Text editing: Noa Shuval
Graphic design: Avi Bohbot
Photography: Yael Bartana
Producer: Adi Nachman
Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop Production: Volker Hormann, Michael Hohendorf
Showcase Beat Le Mot: Production: Olaf Nachtwey

Big thanks to Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Showcase Beat Le Mot, Von Krahli, Yoav Beirach, Shai Ben Zvi, Nadia, Gal, Billy, Lev, Esti and Yaki Dunietz

released May 8, 2026
black vinyl
PNW HC (Spokane)
It's A Setup is:
It's A Setup by It's A Setup
Hayes Noble - Guitar/Vox
Mason Bytnar - Bass
Parker Bytnar - Drums

Drums, Guitar, & Vox recorded at Spokane Falls Community College by Steve Gamberoni, Alex Beliaev, Alex Cover, Alam Estrada, Zayn Kennedy, & Ryan Marshall
Bass recorded at Leadmine No. 4 by Hayes Noble

Mixed by Hayes Noble at Leadmine No. 4
Mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air

All songs written and performed by It's A Setup
*Song #6 written in collaboration w/ Everett Noble

NM. never played. minor wear to jacket.

Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, and Macie Stewart are a trio who utilize string instruments, voices, and manual tape effect processing to craft compositions from alternately tranquil and disquieting improvised music.

More specifically, are you there yet? There being the inflection point where the urge to recede into the blissful innocence of youth is in a constant tug of war with the inescapable pull of conscious adulthood. Where the joys of June and July descend into the autumnal weight of August and September. Are you at the point where you look around at the chaos and confusion swirling through our collective psyche and say, “It can’t get any worse than this,” or do you think, “This too shall pass”? Are you ready for Big Changes? Because Adam Sturgeon is. Over the years, Anishinaabe musician and artist Sturgeon has undergone a metamorphosis, shedding old monikers and reclaiming heritage. In 2021, the collective formerly known as WHOOP-Szo became Status/Non-Status as part of Sturgeon’s ongoing exploration of the complex roots of his family history. Together with Zoon’s Daniel Monkman (who makes a guest appearance on Big Changes), Sturgeon introduced the world to OMBIIGIZI in 2022 via their Polaris shortlisted record Sewn Back Together. Regardless of which project Sturgeon is working on, though, the one thing that doesn’t change is how he treats it: like family, protecting it at all costs. Every reinvention, every reckoning, every return leads back to the same role: provider, protector, father. Big Changes comes from living through what Sturgeon describes as “a war on people and their ways of being” while engaging in the everyday domesticity of dropping the kids off at daycare, heading into work, doing chores around the house, and figuring out how to survive “what is beginning to feel like a real apocalypse.” Inspired by his in-the-moment work with OMBIIGIZI, and with over 40 rough song ideas on hand, Sturgeon recruited Dean Nelson (Beck, Thurston Moore, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks) and Matthew Wiewel (of Deadpan Studios and engineer of Status/Non-Status’ previous album, Surely Travel) to build a home studio in the old church he lives in with his family in London, Ontario. Everything on Big Changes “Is centralized around our Monday morning recording sessions,” he says, “and this routine of caring for my young family in a disintegrating and tough city.” For Sturgeon, Big Changes also reflects his lifelong dialogue with duality, a dichotomy “…felt through the contrast of being a mixed person,” who sees “racism perpetuated against people more visible than myself, while also not feeling like I’m Indian enough.” The record tussles with that uneasy and impossible balance of simultaneously walking in two worlds with conflicting values. It’s less a statement of intent than a lived reflection, one that acknowledges tension without resolving it. “I don’t feel conflicted about where I stand, but I’m not sure I’m always seen,” Sturgeon says, adding that, “[on Sewn Back Together, OMBIIGIZI] found balance in the dichotomy of being damaged and using it as a tool to move forward. Big Changes, however, is foreboding and inquisitive about what is to come.” The song “Big Changes” brings these big ideas and concepts down to street level, reflecting the daily realities of life just outside Sturgeon’s own front door. “This song is about my hood, where I live and raise my family and what I see when I walk out the door,” he says, describing a neighbourhood “mired by gaps in the system” and burdened by housing crises, addiction, and lateral violence. Caught in the crossfire between bureaucratic inaction and a community’s will to survive, “Big Changes” expresses how people are forced into change simply to keep going, whether that change leads somewhere better or somewhere harder doesn’t really matter. What matters is endurance, adaptation, and the resilience to find ways to live with what’s left. “Bones” looks backward to understand and forward to heal. Sturgeon calls it “another dive into and through the past to see where we have come and what is still very much out of our control,” tracing how the wounds of colonialism and the weight of history continue to echo through generations. The song is like a time capsule love letter to the next generation of Indigenous youth, who have inherited the burden of truth and reconciliation from systems they never built, carrying responsibilities born of oppression they never asked for. Though most of Big Changes took shape in Status/Non-Status’s former church-turned-home studio, the album’s thematic crux originates with a song written shortly after the release of 2019’s Polaris Music Prize long-listed album, Warrior Down. “Bitumen Eyes” is a “post-colonial rock odyssey” in two parts. “Truth and Reconciliation / is out of the land and into the pocket / of an old white man,” sings Sturgeon on the reflective first half, as the music swells to match his rising delivery. “Black snake in a locket / with its bitumen eyes that only sees profit,” he declares, confronting the commodification of sacred ground. The song’s final lines—“What of the water?”— are a lament and a demand, a reminder that for Indigenous peoples, the preservation of land and water is also the preservation of self. “Bitumen Eyes II” answers the question not with words but with its raw, explosive, and urgent off-the-cuff arrangement that, by Sturgeon’s account, “really pissed off our neighbours with how heavy we were playing.” Despite its title, one thing that Big Changes doesn’t mess with is the music. Status/Non-Status hold fast to their intuitive and fluid style, their musicianship grounded in connection, familiarity, and an overarching trust in the power of their glorious noise. If anything, Status/Non-Status is more refined on Big Changes, summoning a sound that’s deliberate while retaining the untamed energy that first inspired them. Crunching guitars clock the daily grind of the nine-to-five on opening track “At All,” while bursts of ’90s indie-rock energy collide with sugar-coated power pop melodies on “Peace Bomb.” Ominous shades of gothic blues hang in the air on the title track, while the yin and yang of male and female harmonies (supplied by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and Rachel McLean) on “Blown Again” temper abrasion with warmth. On “Basket Weaving,” a collaboration with Odawa poet and artist Colleen “Coco” Collins, contemplative acoustics and ambient synth textures intertwine with anthemic rock flourishes in an exploration of “ancestral experience of reconnection.” The influence of Canadian noise-rock pioneers Eric’s Trip runs like an undercurrent through Big Changes, especially in its community-minded spirit. That lineage comes full circle on the delicate lullaby ballad “Good Enough,” featuring Eric’s Trip Julie Doiron. “Working with Julie Doiron, my teenage hero and favourite bass player,” says Sturgeon, “is something I could only ever dream of. I don’t take accomplishing my dreams for granted,” he adds. “I am just so lucky Julie is such a giving and wonderful community member.” At its core, Big Changes is an act of community-building. Though its songs focus on reckoning, reflection, and resistance, the album derives its strength from the people who contributed to its creation. Alongside Sturgeon, there is a host of both long-time and new collaborators and friends—like Eric Lourenco, Jessica O’Neil, and Kirsten Kurvink Palm—as well as an extended circle of artists (including Steven Lourenco and Sunnsetter’s Andrew MacLeod) expanding Status/Non-Status into an every growing collective of artists that embodies the push and pull that animates the album itself: the tension between consistency and change and living in solitude and solidarity. Big Changes is about survival, but also about making connections in order to endure. It is the big noise we make together when the world feels like it’s falling apart, and the harmony that comes when we keep time with one another.

released 2026

Recorded at The Former First Spiritualist Church
Recorded and Mixed by Dean Nelson
Additional recording by Adam Sturgeon, Matthew Wiewel and Dany Placard
Mastered by Kristian Montano
Photography - Natasha Roberts
Design and Layout - Black Stevenson
Text - Bennie Allain

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/1427/files/status_abd5f12d-6e4d-418d-b574-cec35a7a22ac.jpg?v=1781573270
morris-hunter-mountain-of-youth-nowhere-nw-signed-new-lp
Mountain of Youth – Nowhere, NW [SIGNED] – New LP

After everything is said and done with regard to the path each of us chooses, we are all just passengers, willing or unwilling, floating to a final destination...enjoy the ride.
Nowhere, NW by Hunter Morris / Mountain of Youth

We were told “All that glitters isn’t gold.”
But we started digging anyway
It only made us bolder
We were sold ‘til gravity took hold
But we were sinking anyway
We’re only getting older

Fault lines don’t care about the time zones
Or continental divides
Don’t lie, just tell me where the time goes
And tell me why

We’re just stowaways

released May 15, 2026
Hunter Morris - Lead Vocals, High Strung Guitar
Phillip Brantley - Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
Nick Robbins - Drums, Electric Guitar
Jojo Glidewell - Piano

Field Commander Ali is the solo project of Ali Mollica, a folk song person living on the South Coast of NSW, Australia . The Next From Field Commander, her new record and second under that taken name, was recorded in her bedroom in Stanwell Park, a beachside town surrounded by bushland. Here, where the Great Dividing Range meets the Tasman Sea, Mollica worked quickly in the early part of 2025, utilising little more than a classical guitar and a 4-track tape recorder to execute her vision. The result is a truly beguiling Australian folk record.
The Next From Field Commander by Field Commander Ali
With a voice that balances understated vulnerability with determined stoicism, Mollica describes everyday scenes, passing interactions and the moments that follow moments between people, all with an astonishing clarity of expression. Full moons are felt but remain unwitnessed, great loves lean into praxis or strain against it, and time is a character that watches quietly on all the while. Despite its modest conception, both the songs and recordings are possessed by a unique density. Layered vocals are used undramatically but effectively. Conversational asides seem to open outwards like leaves, and offhand remarks reveal themselves to be quiet realisations through subtle repetition. There is an intimate spaciousness within these songs too, with shuffling pages, creaking chairs, and distant whistling all entering the sonic sphere. The spirit of folk song clairvoyants like Bridget St John, Anne Briggs and Maxine Funke may be sensed throughout, while Michael Hurley’s ‘Wildegeeses’ is given a faithful, though suitably idiosyncratic, re-reading. A tradition is being channeled here, though ultimately what you are hearing is the emergence of a distinct new voice. As such, The Next From Field Commander moves with a meandering yet captivating immediacy, clear and self-assured, while remaining deeply receptive to the world and all the things in it - ‘still reaching out, still finding out’. As Mollica notes herself: "My songs often express the literal goings on in my life – the lyrics are raw and unbridled (and maybe a bit unhinged, too); but underneath this immediacy is a heavy hum that I think sounds like not knowing. How I wish to know!" If knowing remains beyond us, the process of trying to work it out is compelling as ever. released 2026. All songs written and recorded by Field Commander Ali, except "wildegeeses" (Michael Hurley)

Musicians:
Ali Mollica (& Neve Ireland plays percussion on the first track)

Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk
