From a young age, Angela was immersed in music, listening to The Doors, 2Pac, and Queen in her father's car, while her mother played Samba and Salsa. Her brother, Brandon, introduced her to new artists and classic records from Stones Throw, sparking their songwriting journey together. Angela followed her passion for music early on, expressing creativity through songwriting, piano, and guitar. Her debut record, 'Introspection', a collaboration with Adrian Younge, was released in 2020. At 17, she joined The Midnight Hour, Younge’s group with Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Creating her own music, Angela wanted to honor her roots: her father arrived in Highland Park from Mexico in the '70s, where he met her mother, of mixed Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage. Childhood walks down Figueroa in Highland Park with her grandparents left a lasting impression. 'Descanso' marks a new chapter for Angela, reflecting on her upbringing, memories, and the theme of love in its various forms. Written with her brother, the EP’s title means "to rest" in Spanish. Angela explains, “Rest is necessary for growth, it allows time to digest experiences and feelings, and helps me better understand them.” 'Descanso' showcases both vulnerability and strength, offering comfort to herself and others.

The Indonesian composer and performer, Peni Candra Rini, who specializes in traditional, neotraditional, and experimental music from Java releases her new album Wulansih. FFO: Arooj Aftab, Anoushka Shankar, traditional Indonesian gamelan music.
Wulansih by Peni Candra Rini

the Indonesian composer and performer whose musical practice encompasses a wide range of traditional and experimental Javanese styles, announces her new album Wulansih (July 12, 2024) via New Amsterdam Records. Austin: The title track kicks things off as spiraling guitars jingle-jangle across rippling piano notes, thumping bass and a clackity backbeat. The melody and arrangement conjure up comparisons to the Byrds, Big Star and The Replacements, but by now, those influences have been baked into Luther’s musical DNA. The lyrics offer a nuanced narrative that explicates that first frisson of instant attraction: “Hitching a ride on the outskirts of town, sun-dappled in gold, as the dusk looms, we’re strewn in our room and our bodies enfold, these are the days when all things amaze and no one gets caught, these are the ways we laze in the daze, neck-deep in a thought.” Just ahead of bridge, guitars idle and the beat drops down to a chunky cadence as this newfound romance goes off the rails: “Buried alive on an all-night drive so late, staring ahead, wearing our tread, we wait, we wait, we wait.”

Although Luther’s feet are firmly planted in the 21st century, he spent his childhood soaking up the music of ‘60s and ‘70s. So, it’s no surprise that a couple of tracks here draft off a blueprint created by L.A. bands like Love, The Merry-Go-Round and The Byrds. “Downtown Girls,” which is also the album’s first single, is simply irresistible (but not in a louche, Robert Palmer way). Jangly, 12-string guitar partners with boinging bass and a cantilevered beat. Lyrics spin the familiar yarn of the outsider longing to sit at the cool kids’ table: “I stumble up to the busy street, the locals reek of cheap-cut meat, neon strangers pass in a dance, the downtown girls just laugh and dance. The sunny melody belies the lyrics’ diffidence. By the break, bendy guitar chords uncoil, bordered by stinging electric riffs that mirror the the lyrics’ angsty leitmotif.

If The Byrds and The Kinks ever collaborated on a song, it might sound something like “Right Way.” Ringing guitars chime atop spidery bass and a rat-a-tat beat. Sagacious lyrics explore the emotional duality, that see-sawing sensation that charts the highs and lows of love: “It’s the light of the door that opens on you like a grin, and there is nothing more than to be consumed from within,” versus “It’s the death of a dream that startles your heart in the night, and the breath of a scream will fill you as you wake in fright.”

This record is magnificent front to back, but the best tracks hopscotch across both sides. On “All The Ways,” querulous guitars are tethered to loping bass lines and a galloping backbeat. Lyrics offer a bitter treatise on infidelity: “A broken vase, a broken vase of rain, and a broken vow, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ himself couldn’t save you now.” But by the chorus it’s unclear as to who is at fault: “All The Ways I might have loved you can’t save me now.” Willowy acoustic notes dovetail with caustic electric riffs on the break underscoring what Jimi Hendrix once labelled “Love Or Confusion.”

Then, there’s shimmery “Wanna Be Your Lover.” Pealing guitars repeat a magical cluster of chords, bookended by buoyant bass lines and brawny backbeat. Sharp and succinct lyrics cut to the chase: “It’s the way you look when you’re not alone, it’s the kind of thing where you know it’s wrong, oh I wanna be your lover.” Beatific harmonies ahh-ing and sighing behind each verse, coupled with a sunshiny early ‘70s guitar solo, manages to downplay the lyrics’ licentious intent.

Modal guitars intwine, lining up with wily bass lines and a tambourine shake on “The Midnight Flame.” Intricate lyrics paint a vivid portrait of a chance encounter: “I caught your eye in the madding crowd, the clouds were draped in danger, the scream in our hearts couldn’t cry out loud, we were like one perfect stranger/An owl in the eves watched over the scene, the Chinese lanterns gently swayed drunk on love that punctures the spleen, I started to dance as the requiem played.” As serpentine guitars snake around lilting, Parisian accordion runs, it’s immediately apparent that this chance encounter has forged a symbiotic connection: “For all that is light in the sun, and all that is right on the run, I built up the will to taste a tear, and you, you responded in kind, with your soul, body and mind, and we beat back the fear to dream our days and burn the midnight flame.”

Finally, the aforementioned “Sing This Song” is equal parts Punky and melodic. Cascading guitars are anchored by stuttery bass lines and a speed-shifting beat. Even as this shared madness threatens to get out of control, the bond remains unbreakable: “We’ve got a poem in our hearts, let the words resound, we’ve got a ballad in our souls keeping us spellbound.” Luther’s vocals phase and shudder on the chorus as fluttery guitars accelerate through the arrangement’s hairpin turns.

The record takes a Psychedelic trip on both “And Ever” and “Tu Es Donc Je Suis.” The former is a drowsy dirge powered by lysergic guitars, murmuring keys, whirring bass and a peevish beat. Luther shares vocal duties with SBT (the artist formerly known as Sara Beth Tucek). Their blend is by turns, moody, melancholy and evocative as lyrics long for an extinguished relationship: “Smoke curling through the stale air from a single crushed cigarette, music lingers while there’s no one there, in minor keys from an old cassette.” Sidewinding guitars meander as the song winds to a close.

On the latter, wobbly wah-wah riffs lattice tensile bass, gauzy keys and a tabla-esque beat. Roughly translated, the French title means “You are, therefore I am.” Lyrics like “I wanna see, see things through the lens of your eyes, Girl, the dream that paints over all the debris.” sketch out a tableau of obsessive love. A kaleidoscopic guitar solo wraps around the break as cryptic dialogue pays homage to the French New Wave classic, “Breathless.” The final solo splits the difference between the reverse guitar loops featured on The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and the subtle sitar-riffic fills that licked the margins of “Norwegian Wood.”

The record ends on a dissonant note with “Your Reckless Heart.” Splayed guitar chords are matched with downcast bass and a tumble-down beat. Despite the lyrical sturm und drang on the verse, the romantic regret washes away by the chorus, which offers an oath of allegiance: “You believe and I will follow, your darkest dreams, my saving grace, like a pill that I must swallow, your reckless heart leaves no trace.” An incandescent guitar solo shivers and aches on the break, just ahead of piercing electric riffs. It’s a quiescent finish to a glorious album.

This is a solo record in name only, Luther, of course sang and played guitar. But he was aided and abetted by longtime compadres Jason Hiller who played bass, as well as Chris Joyner on accordion and organ. Jason Falkner (a talented singer-songwriter in his own right) also chimes in, adding synth, lead guitars and vocals.

To quote Nick Lowe, this record is Pure Pop For Now People. It is a perfect distillation of Luther Russell’s myriad influences. Glimmers of Italian Neo-Realism and French New Wave Cinema dot the lyrics. Melodies and arrangements alternate between dark and light, Noirish and effervescent. This record aches in all the right ways. And that seems to be the point. To jump-start the entire personality spectrum into action. He also contributed visual work, portions of which can be seen in List of Demands' album art. The pieces were guided by prompts from the exhibition’s curator, Asha Iman Veal, who aimed to “encourage deep thinking about parallel experiences and relationships between global artists of color and diverse Black artists.”

After the show, ESS chief engineer Alex Inglizian encouraged Locks to expand upon and record the material, and volunteered to operate the controls for the occasion. This new phase brought in a number of Locks’s go-to collaborators to bring depth and balance to the project: cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, violinist Macie Stewart, poet Krista Franklin, and turntablist / drummer Ralph Darden (aka DJ Major Taylor). The results, though, are distinctly Damon Locks. On top of that, the results are distinctly new for Damon Locks. Sure, there have been hints of List of Demands strewn throughout his catalog – the dense rhythms of his Black Monument Ensemble, the chaotic 404 cut-and-mix of New Future City Radio, the lysergic sci-fi deejay toasting of Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra, the dub-inflected post-punk of The Eternals – but this is a focused cross-section of its entirety. Arguably the most "Damon Locks" Damon Locks record to date.

His depth of experience as a mic controller is certainly on display here, but his signature vocal rhythms seem to permeate the sample choices as well. Locks’s always notable great taste, informed by years of digging in the crates, certainly brings with it a penchant for top-notch sample construction. The unsung crate-digging heroes, though, are the ones whose knowledge extends to the unclassifiable sections. The bins below the bins. These are the people who leave the shop with a stack of sermons, obscure radio broadcasts from now-defunct stations, crumbling documents of a past which remains relevant, disappearing voices for those with ears to hear. Locks has those ears, no doubt, and he definitely has those records. List of Demands utilizes samples of these Black voices of the past in a strikingly rhythmic way, often yielding much of the meter to overlapping human vocal patterns rather than entirely filling that space with traditionally “musical” sounds. The result is a sort of multifaceted, groove-focused body music executed with enough finesse to make a complicated concept seem easy.

This is our list of demands: Beauty, Form, Destiny, Love, Time, Future, and Light

The title, List of Demands, is influenced by Locks’s work in Stateville Correctional Center with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project. “In the summer of 2023 I taught a class where we developed a document that stated the desires of the incarcerated artists in the group,” he says. The group spent a summer session creating what would become the Artist Constitution, a document in which their beliefs, aspirations, and demands could be compiled, which would in turn be distributed outside the prison walls. A poster of that document is included in the vinyl edition of List of Demands.

“List of Demands is not just my list,” says Locks. “The list is in conveyance, in response, and in honor of all of those great Black speakers that turned a phrase to generate movement and change. On the heels of the news that I have to have another surgery Dave Palmer and I decided to make my 14th studio album just in case. It’s a personal journey through the American Songbook featuring reinterpretations of some of my favorite songs by Chappell Roan, Britney Spears, Randy Newman, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, The Louvin Brothers, Miley Cyrus and more. And even though this time around I’m contending with material I didn’t write, it somehow feels just like me for better or worse. It’s also incredibly expensive to make so I’m humbly asking those of you who care about the work, and anyone who would plunk down a couple bucks to have seen me live in the past few years, to get involved with the campaign to get it mixed and pressed and to your doorstep. Not only can you snag the new record, but you can cop the book, the box set, bundles of catalog vinyl, all at a steep discount. Musically, this is blown-out, grooving noise-rock in the Am Rep tradition, not too far from The Hammer Party (or the more locked-in riffage of Landed) and Cows. It’s not excessively noisy, but the primitive, laid-back riffing and caustic guitar tones are all redolent of the traditional noise-rock formula, punk rock’s greasy, sluggish offspring. Larry Joe Treadway is a capable vocalist and deserving of his two first names, sounding like he’s crashed at least one car that he was able to walk away from without a scratch. All that, and the lyrics are mostly referencing various old-timey bad-ass wrestlers, the guys whose Dark Side Of The Ring episodes were more about shooting pistols at bloodthirsty fans than wasting away on pills. The band started when Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten moved to Austin, TX in 2009, and upon meeting an incredibly diverse music scene in Texas he was inspired to form a band that would bring together all the different things he was hearing. He saw a potential for combining his own background in jazz and improvised music with experimental rock, hip-hop, electronic music, and all the things that exist in the crossover between these expressions, a playful mix that often had a cinematic flair. The Young Mothers were born, and for the first five years the band only played live, and quickly built a reputation for being an exciting act you needed to see. In 2014 their debut album “A Mothers Work Is Ever Done” showed that the live excitement could also be extended into the recording studio. Set against those respectively anxious and swaggering tracks, her voice occupies the space of an inner monologue narrating a tense walk home, and green room misogyny from a place of droll observance, a universal experience rendered in specific detail. Like its predecessors Attachment Styles and the Gender Studies EP, Something Soft was recorded by Jamie Hyland. One of Something Soft’s ghosting anthems, “1800-Call-Me-Back,” began as a joke that the band should write a football chant, but it became far more complex—the delicious balance of chaos and clarity they struck would have been impossible without time. “I Miss My Dog” is less off-the-cuff, but its meditation on grief builds up at a breakneck pace, from feedback to Keane’s drumming and singing to a conclusion that smothers that grief in bass and guitar. For those who’ve come to recognize themselves in M(h)aol’s songs, listening to Something Soft is like jumping into a long-running chat thread, full of fury and humor. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser describes the collection as “a love letter to the moments we spend in-between”—a letter realized via an intentional return to piano, her first instrument and the origin of her creative expression. Here Stewart creates a striking and cinematic work through collages of prepared piano, field recordings, and string quartet compositions, one that gives shape to a transient universe all its own while tracing the line of her musical past, full circle.
When the Distance is Blue by Macie Stewart
Long-heralded in musician circles for her versatility, Stewart stands as a distinguished, go-to collaborator across genre and style, with a collaborative CV that reads like a dream year-end list—performing strings for Makaya McCraven or Japanese Breakfast; singing harmonies with Tweedy; arranging for Alabaster DePlume, Resavoir, Mannequin Pussy, or SZA; co-leading the jagged art-rock experimentation of Finom, her duo with songwriter Sima Cunningham. This varied-yet-distinct sound has led to a name recognition that goes beyond the devoted liner note enthusiast.

“Macie Stewart has had a hand in making some of the best
tracks of the past five years transcendent.” (Pitchfork)

'When the Distance is Blue' finds her gathering those threads and focusing those sensibilities into an 8-piece song cycle. The first sessions were recorded with IARC house engineer Dave Vettraino at Chicago’s Palisade Studios in early 2023. The piano was prepared with coins and contact mics, creating harmonically and texturally rich sounds to explore and improvise alongside.

Those improvisations eventually became nestled within a growing collection of Stewart’s field recordings. 2023 was a year marked with extensive touring, during which she collected dozens of aural snapshots from airports, stairwells, and crowded markets, effectively compiling an audio journal of her travels. Weaving their way throughout the record, those recordings form a collage of sound, movement, and memory.

“I wanted to recontextualize these recordings and evoke a nostalgia for something I wasn’t able to name,” says Stewart. That recontextualization was deepened by further performances and improvisations by Lia Kohl, Whitney Johnson (Matchesse), and Zach Moore, all recorded at Comfort Station in Chicago. It’s fitting for such a fervent collaborator that these collaborations began to bring the musical scope of 'When The Distance is Blue' into focus.

“Spring Becomes You, Spring Becomes New” begins with a series of unmetered and searching prepared piano repetitions before blooming into a rhythmically pulsing waltz of ennui à la Margaret Leng Tan’s approach to the material of Cage or Crumb. Electronically enhanced sustaining notes merge with droning violins in a dense teapot upper register, then are slowly paired away to reveal the inner layer of consonance and comfort, as the metallic rhythms of the prepared piano are co-opted by pizzicato plucked strings. When the sound of the piano re-enters it’s in its natural, unprepared state and in service of a simple melody—a slow-moving earworm, the final repetition, carrying the dynamic piece to its end. “This piece reminds me of a cross country train ride through different sceneries and landscapes,” says Stewart. It’s the feeling when you’re witnessing everything pass outside your window, knowing you may never set foot there.”

What’s more, this conceptual train ride is one that touches on many of the themes throughout the record—traveling through pieces like “Tsukiji”, which consists of field recordings taken during a walk through the crowded Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, or “Stairwell (Before and After)”, a serendipitous collage of piano improvisations overlaid with vocal improvisations recorded in a beautifully reverberant stairwell in Paris, France.

In the album’s final piece, “Disintegration,” Stewart’s through-composed quartet arrangement bends and contorts in a microtonal descent. Raw harmonics scrape and pull, whistling flute-like across desolate valleys, as strings spiral into an unknown beyond. From this stripped, warped place, we face the inevitability of transformation, and embrace the possibilities of change.

'When The Distance is Blue' is a companion piece for moving through life. A source of solace when we are unsure where we will land. The album draws its title from Rebecca Solnit’s book of essays, 'A Field Guide to Getting Lost'. Stewart, too, contends with the longing for all that lies out of reach, and gives shape to that longing throughout this contemplative collection with a musical lexicon which lands somewhere between Alvin Curran’s 'Songs and Views from the Magnetic Garden' and Claire Rousay’s 'A Softer Focus'.

credits

released March 21, 2025

All compositions by Macie Stewart

Macie Stewart - piano, prepared piano, violin, voice, field recordings
Lia Kohl - cello
Whitney Johnson - viola
Zach Moore - double bass

Prepared piano with dimes, contact microphones, and guitar amp, recorded at Palisade Studios, Chicago, IL | April 2023

Prepared piano with felt recorded at International Anthem Studios, Chicago, IL | Feb 2024

String improvisations and compositions played by Lia Kohl, Whitney Johnson, Zach Moore, and Macie Stewart at Comfort Station, Chicago, IL | January 2024

Field recording for Tsukiji recorded at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan | March 2024

Field recording of vocal improvisation for Stairwell (Before and After) recorded in a stairwell at the Philharmonie de Paris in Paris, France | June 2023

Field recording for Disintegration recorded at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan | March 2024

Engineered and Mixed by Dave Vettraino
Mastered by David Allen

Bio contributions by Audrey Steiner

Album Art & Design by Zander Raymond
Additional Layout Design by Aaron Denton
Insert Photo (top) by Macie Stewart
Insert Photo (middle) by Shannon Marks
Insert Photo (bottom) by Dave Vettraino

Featuring members of Pansy Division,
Avengers, Camper Van Beethoven,
Anohni and the Johnsons,
Oranger, Enorchestra, Bomb,
and the State Band of Guanajuato.
.................
Panorama is an LGBTQIA+ album
Panorama is a bilingual Spanish/English album
(Side A is in Spanish, Side B is in English).
.................
Recorded in Leon, Guanajuato with a cross section of notable US underground music stalwarts and emerging Mexican instrumentalists. I do love writing, but I had always thought the ability to construct a melody, framework, and communicate a sonic vision was beyond me, since I mainly built song ideas through rhythm. Somehow, writing a proper song felt beyond me. I had bits and pieces or ideas and started forming them into songs by playing the piano rhythmically, without worrying about the melodic arc upfront. Once I allowed myself to be in that position, everything just started flowing, and I felt braver in clumsily letting ideas develop. I even forgave myself for not being a virtuoso. Funny enough, that was when I found myself able to write things that were beyond my ability and increase my playing ability to match the idea. I don’t feel pressure at this point because I am trying not to have expectations. Historically, expectations have been where disappointment is born for me. While I have goals, those come from me and things I look forward to doing. Expectations, on the other hand, come from imagining outcomes beyond my actions. I always want to be careful about that.

Vida Vella is unlike anything you’ve done with Pansy Division and Avengers. Some of these songs were written as punk blasts and slowed down to allow for breath, swagger, or additional instrumentation. If a song has a decent framework at its base, it can work at 180 bpm or 80 bpm. I found that slowing things down allowed for a mood with more creative expression at this point, but always with some sort of message that is both vulnerable and empowering or encouraging, which is what I took from the songwriters of the bands I have played with. Inviting a group of Amer-Indie stalwarts and Mexican folkloric and orchestral musicians really made the record. Part of the process was my writing and setting forth the demos, then standing back and letting the individuals add their signature approaches. Co-producer Reuben Butchart really shone in his role of orchestration, encouragement, and guidance, while joining me in letting the players be who they are and acknowledging that everyone was invited for a reason and given trust to shine. I am Mexican, but I grew up on the border. It is referred to as “cultura fronteriza.” It takes pieces from both languages and is in a constant state of extracting resources from both sides of the border and perpetually translating. This was important to keep. Interestingly, I felt like I sang and engaged differently in each language. The language evokes a different sense of self. Spanish words tend to end in vowels and evoke a more romantic and reaching effect, while English is more consonant-heavy, which feels more precise but also more guarded.

‘Panorama’ boasts an extremely well-stacked cast of players from some highly regarded bands like Camper Van Beethoven, Anohni and the Johnsons, and the State Band of Guanajuato. While the phrase can conjure moments of shock and surprise, Narvaez, however uses the phrase as a foot lamp illuminating a path towards momentary transcendence - a sudden or gradual process of skin-shedding of former selves and past lives. j.o.y.s., as an album, reconciles with the past before blissfully stumbling into something new.

The music on j.o.y.s. follows a similar serpentine path. An album comprising 9 songs that represent the culmination of countless hours of experimentation and collaboration that went into the recording process. This consisted of Narvaez living in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles using a spartan set-up of electric guitar, a few pedals and a laptop and Narvaez’s longtime friend and collaborator Justin Gaynor contributing pedal steel from his apartment in Crown Heights in Brooklyn. The synchronicity not lost on the two, the theme of travel or trekking is prominent on the album - both in the physical sense and across the ribbon of memory that shape our identity.

To that end, Narvaez’s friendship and collaboration with Justin Gaynor (who releases music under the name Bestamo) started in High School in Piscataway, New Jersey, extended into the heady days of early aughts Brooklyn and continued even when Narvaez moved across the country. The two would dedicate Fridays to improvising and exploring new sounds together through video chat - bending time around them to keep their collaboration alive. A Tim Hecker show and Relatives in Descent by Protomartyr were pivotal gifts from the universe that would encourage Narvaez to turn these improvisations with Gaynor into a fully fleshed record. This led to Narvaez seeking out Sonny DiPerri, whose production credits include julie, Wisp, DIIV, Emma Ruth Rundle, my bloody valentine as well as Protomartyr’s Relatives in Descent to mix j.o.y.s. and serve as the resident mentor / spiritual advisor. During these sessions Narvaez would use this opportunity to understand how DiPerri worked, why he liked what he liked and why he made decisions during production. Following this tutelage, Adam Gonsalves was brought on to master the record for vinyl.

While the pedal steel is prominent, j.o.y.s., as a project, is more in conversation with shoegaze and noise than what has recently been deemed ambient country. Heavy brutalist slabs of noise, swirling feedback create the sound bed of these songs. Gaynor’s pedal steel on this album operates as important connective tissue as both the road and the traveler between the light and shadow zones. Drones are wrapped in distortion, processed just below the threshold where we’d throw the word “harsh” around. Rather, there is a delicate dance between Gaynor’s top-rope pedal steel lines - always sweet and always just a bit mournful - with Narvaez’s ringing bass notes and noise chatter. The two tread around each other warily - the push and pull creating positive tension that is necessary in anything deemed “ambient”. Listen to “heights” as an excellent example of this, or the way “lee & leo” lets those notes hang in the air while Gaynor’s pedal steel rises to catch them.

The light can’t ignore the dark. Outside of Sarah Turbo's caustic vocals and a few minimal overdubs, the band recorded the album live in the basement of the old Klement’s Sausage Factory; colloquially known as The Meat Locker. By limiting the amount of studio post-production on the album, Sick successfully captures the immediacy, ferocity and danger of the band’s performances. While Turbo’s lyrical topics cover everything from relationships and workplace drama to what happens to your consumer products when you die, the band tears through 9 songs in a brutal 15 minutes.
