All 11 songs are exceptional, from both a performance and compositional point of view. Ray Manzerek’s production is more akin to hard rock bands than their earlier punk works, but the songs still pack quite a punch. Before the recording of the album, singer Exene Cervenka’s sister was killed by a drunk driver, and the band decided to work out their grief in the music, as evidenced by two of the album’s best tracks: the melodic “Riding With Mary” and the vintage ’50s sound of “Come Back to Me.” The highlights don’t stop there, however; also included are the Led Zepplin’esque “The Hungry Wolf” (an early video favorite of MTV), the accelerating “Motel Room in My Bed,” the rocker “Blue Spark,” the spacious title track, and the album closer “The Have Nots.” Again, Cervenka and John Doe supply some great vocal harmonies (perhaps the only punk band to ever do so), while Billy Zoom shows off great rockabilly chops throughout. Under The Big Black Sun is one of the quintessential rock records from the ’80s.” – G.Prato

Recorded 1980 - 1998. Released 2018.
White vinyl LP stuck in a Warholian package with removable sticker and liners by David Fricke!
I'm Sticking With You: An Introduction To Moe Tucker by Moe Tucker

Diminutive perpetual heartbeat of the Velvets!

The unmistakable beat of the Velvet Underground was malleted out on the unconventional kit of Moe Tucker. The Early Days of Hip-Hop 1982-84 is a new book published by Soul Jazz Books/Records featuring 300+ pages of stunning photographs documenting the rise of hip-hop in the early 1980s, by French photographer Sophie Bramly. With an introduction by Bill Adler and additional text by Fab Five Freddy, Grand Mixer D.St, Rahiem of The Furious Five, Arthur Baker , Zephyr, Muhamad of The Magnificent Force, Lady Pink , Mister Freeze of The Rock Steady Crew, Patti Astor & Slick Rick. Sophie Bramly lived in New York during this period and became firmly embedded in the emergent scene. The book features many stunning, intimate images of a star-studded roll call of legendary hip-hop figures, all of whom were only just getting known or in their ascendency. These include Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmixer D.ST, Jazzy Jay, Red Alert, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, Lisa Lee, the Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys and more. Bramly knew that hip-hop was becoming a cultural force rather than just a musical fashion, and spent many hours photographing the four essential elements of this new world: emcees, deejays, graffiti artists and breakdancers. Legendary graffiti artists are captured at work and play, such as Keith Haring, Dondi, Futura, Phase One, Zephyr and Lady Pink, and breakdancers including members of Magnificent Force, Dynamic Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew. Sophie Bramly is a French photographer who moved to NYC in 1982 aged 22 and for two years documented the burgeoning hip-hop scene. She returned to France in 1984, bringing a number of US hip-hop artists to Europe, and in 1987 moved to London to host/produce MTV’s first ever hip-hop show, Yo! MTV Raps. She lives in Paris and her work is featured extensively at the exhibition Hip-Hop 360 at the prestigious Philarmonie de Paris, France/Dec 21–Aug 22

vinyl: VG

sleeve: VG-

American Worker Review by Alex Henderson: "In 1980, the BusBoys sent shock waves through the music world with their song "KKK," which found members of a mostly African-American band singing that they wanted to "join the Ku Klux Klan and play in a rock & roll band." Of course, no one in the BusBoys really aspired to be a Klansman -- they were actually ridiculing institutional racism and asserting that if African-Americans were good enough to pay taxes and fight in the Vietnam War, they shouldn't be excluded from any part of the American dream, including the white-dominated rock & roll field. Unfortunately, a few simpletons took their lyrics out of context and assumed that the BusBoys were self-hating blacks, but to anyone with half a brain, it was clear where they were coming from. After using shock value and humor to get their anti-racism, pro-working-class message across on their first album, Minimum Wage Rock & Roll, the BusBoys brought an equally sociopolitical agenda to their sophomore effort, American Worker. This likable, if uneven, LP ranges from political offerings like "American Workers," "I Get Lost," and the reggae-influenced "Opportunity" to less provocative, more mainstream pop/rock fare such as "Last Forever" and "Heart and Soul." Regrettably, this 1982 release was the BusBoys' last album on Arista (they wouldn't record another album until the late '80s, when they shifted their focus from rock to synth-funk/urban contemporary). The BusBoys had a lot of potential, and it's unfortunate that they didn't fully live up to it. But despite their imperfections, Minimum Wage Rock & Roll and American Worker are fun albums that deserve credit for taking some risks and making some sociopolitical statements that needed to be made."

Artist Biography by William Ruhlmann: "The BusBoys were a Los Angeles-based rock & roll band made up of five African-Americans and a Hispanic who played satirically upon their ethnic origins in songs with titles like "There Goes the Neighborhood." They were formed in the late '70s with a lineup of brothers Brian O'Neal (keyboards, vocals) and Kevin O'Neal (bass, vocals), Gus Louderman (vocals), Mike Jones (keyboards, vocals), Victor Johnson (guitar), and Steve Felix (drums). Essentially a novelty act, they nevertheless impressed listeners with their energetic bar band rock. They reached their peak of national exposure when they appeared in the 1982 Eddie Murphy film 48 Hrs. Their two Arista albums reached the charts, as did the 1984 single "Cleanin' Up the Town," which was featured in the film Ghostbusters."

Manufactured By – Arista Records, Inc. The music is like a lens through which Otto views the world, always slightly askew and irrevocably warped.

RECORD STORE DAY 2022 RELEASE
LIMITED TO 2,000 COPIES WORLDWIDE
LIMITED TO 1,450 COPIES IN NORTH AMERICA

INCLUDES:

No Mistakes* (2:19) • What About My Engine Rebuild* (2:58) • At The Water* (1:41) • Learn Greek In Greece* (4:52) • Public Eye* (4:02) • My Generation (Townshend) (2:11) • Ghost Boy** (2:56) • Retread** (3:40) • Lady In Cement** (3:55) • Young** (2:54) • Who Are The Flowers From** (0:58) • Drive** (4:24) • Fly Line** (1:51) • Slut** (1:50) • Amgonna Kaar** (4:58) • Our Secret** (2:30) • The Man With The Flashlight** (2:55) • Fake** (2:53) • Looking Back*** (4:04) • Scrap Heap (2:35) • Ghost Boy Instrumental (2:43) • 283 (1:03) • County K (2:22) • Fun To Be Fake (2:05) • Kids In Kanvas (1:17) • A Light In A Line (0:53) • Meat (0:59) • Sing Along (1:08) • Wong Family (3:23)

*Originally issued on Learn Greek In Greece (Control Records 01, 1980)

**Originally issued on Ghost Boy / Fake (Hasch Platten KIF 005, 1983)

***Originally issued on Musik Für Dich (Hasch Platten KIF 006/7, 1984)

L'emblématique album ’83 de formation minimal-synth montréalaise IKO a 40 ans! While they didn't reach the same levels of acclaim as the Talking Heads, the Slits, or even more immediate peers like DNA or the Bush Tetras, the Dance created a hybrid of high-tension sounds on the same level as all of those bands that was evident from their first self-produced, self-released 12" EP, 1980's Dance for Your Dinner. Compilation release Do Dada collects that EP as well as alternate mixes of songs from later records, non-album tracks, and other unreleased material. The frenetic energy of the band's first four songs is almost uncontainable, from the eerie falsetto vocals and slippery bass line of "She Likes to Beat" to the caustic funk push, unexpected violin/percussion breakdown, and constant unhinged vocalizations of "Do Dada," a song emblematic of the anything-goes stylistic approach of the N.Y.C. scene the Dance were part of in the early '80s. There's an extended mix of the slick, slightly gothic groove "In Lust" (taken from the band's 1981 debut LP of the same name) as well as the dubby swells of non-album B-side "Dubbin' Down" and two versions of the previously unreleased "Into the Future," an emphatic and chaotic original mix and a sample-heavy mix by Arthur Baker that sounds almost unrecognizable from the first. The material on Do Dada draws from every phase of their brief lifespan and offers a great idea of how their sound changed and held on to its core elements as they burned quickly and ferociously.

Originally released on Posh Boy in 1982

Tracks B2-B4 are bonus tracks not on the original release.
Released in conjunction with the Johanna Went exhibition "Passion Container" at The Box Gallery, Los Angeles.
Includes download card for WAV version of the album.

Hyena by Johanna Went

Jazz organist ‘Brother’ Jack McDuff (born Eugene McDuffy in 1926 September 17, 1926 – January 23, 2001) was second only to the infamous Jimmy Smith in terms of fame and the impact he made with the King of keyboard instruments - the Hammond B-3 Organ. Live At Parnells’ is made up of 15 tracks selected from a week-long engagement in June 1982, featuring Danny Wollinski on sax, guitarist Henry Johnson and Garrick King on the drums. His rock-solid basslines and blues-drenched solos are balanced by clever, almost pianistic melodies and interesting progressions and phrases. McDuff began as a bassist playing with Denny Zeitlin and Joe Farrell. He studied privately in Cincinnati and worked with Johnny Griffin in Chicago. He taught himself organ and piano in the mid-'50s, and began gaining attention working with Willis Jackson in the late '50s and early '60s, cutting high caliber soul-jazz dates for Prestige. McDuff made his recording debut as a leader for Prestige in 1960, playing in a studio pickup band with Jimmy Forrest. They made a pair of outstanding albums: Tough Duff and The Honeydripper. McDuff organized his own band the next year, featuring Harold Vick and drummer Joe Dukes. Things took off when McDuff hired a young guitarist named George Benson. They were among the most popular combos of the mid-'60s and made several excellent albums. McDuff experimented with electronic keyboards and fusion during the '70s, then in the '80s got back in the groove. While his health fluctuated throughout the '90s, McDuff released several discs on the Concord Jazz label before succumbing to heart failure on January 23, 2001, at the age of 74.

CURRENT RAGE – "The missing musical link between Athens and Atlanta. To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the out-of-print forgotten classic, Propeller Sound Recordings is set to release and remastered and expanded edition of "Seven Songs". While songs like "The Seventeen Forever" had the pace of L.A. punk, the band clearly didn't have an interest in the skull-bludgeoning impact, though Quercio brings in some fun snarl on "Grimly Forming." A slew of the songs had already been attempted in earlier versions, giving the group a chance to punch them up and around a bit for these takes. "She Turns to Flowers," "Going Home," and "Happen Happened" all benefit in turn, finding Quercio in at once strong and light voice -- his best area contemporary might have been Peter Case, though Quercio has a dreamier, wistful feeling in his vocals in contrast. Like many psych revival records, it's interesting to hear both the similarities and differences with the past -- while Quercio clearly knows his trippy guitar tricks, Troy Howell's drums kick through just a little more strongly in a clearer mix than many '60s forebears tried. The keyboards throughout from Quercio and Gregg Gutierrez add extra giddy fuel and flavor, a welcome merriment.

originally released December 1, 1985

Dick voice/words
Bruce guitar/voice
Grant bass
Trotsky drums
<iframe style="border: 0; Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hip-hop on vinyl, featuring some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA between 1979-83. // The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More, through to rarities and little-known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school. // The deluxe 3xLP + 7" single comes with extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. // It features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly, one of a very select group of photographers who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip-hop in NYC. // These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. Where the first DJs – Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa – were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first pre-sampling rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes. As Chic’s ‘Good Times’ was to ‘Rappers’ Delight’, the songs here feature then-current dancefloor hits such as the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’ or Cheryl Lynn’s ‘To Be Real’ while MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique new sound. // This new Soul Jazz Records collection celebrates these first old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.

PROGROMO was a short lived brain child of Bernd Zimmermann, the mastermind of bands like ADD, DEUTSCHDENCK and ISOLIERBAND. It didn’t even seem akin to such ‘82 punk classics as the Circle Jerk’s Wild In The Streets, the Descendents' Milo Goes To College or Fear’s The Record. And it sure as hell didn’t sound like the Clash’s Combat Rock. Rather, Condition Red, the debut album from New Orleans punk band Red Rockers, echoed the power, aggression, and highly charged political anger of the Clash’s early work. And deliberately so. Eventually, the Red Rockers joined their inspirations on a few US tour dates, showing audiences how the Clash used to do things as they leaped about in spray-painted shirts before hammer and sickle-festooned amps, screaming about “Guns Of Revolution.” Both Creem and Rolling Stone featured them, the latter beknighting them “the American Clash,” telling of plans to tour Cuba and release a vicious new single called “Voice of America.” The song instead surfaced the following year as a B-side to massive MTV pop hit “China,” an echo of what Red Rockers had been just the year before and were no longer. "The missing 24” master tapes were found in a garage by Johnny Colla from (Huey Lewis &) The News at Sandy Pearlman’s estate sale. Once the movement had lost its mainstream popularity, only those who really wanted to be a part of it were left. Gone were Vivienne Westwood’s brilliantly offensive torn t-shirts, now it was more likely an all black uniform with striking symbols of peace and anarchy painted on the garments. The imagery of Crass and Discharge was the uniform of choice. But where was the sense of humour? Although Crass did use a lot of humour to make their points, so many people missed the joke. They were not the usual early eighties punk rock band, not quite falling in with the anarcho punks due to their melodic music, nor did they fit in with the Oi! Crowd, as their lyrics detailed more than football, fighting and alcohol.

The lyrics are one of the best things about this record, the well read band wrote very well informed and incisive lyrics, with a wide range of subjects. This may lead people to believe it will be an equally frightening listen, however, the Subhumans have a keen ear for melody as well as damning riffs. One minute the melody is slow dark and frightening, the next fast paced, righteous and furious. This fits the subject matter perfectly, fast minor chords with anxious lyrics concerning Lucas’ smoking habits one minute, and terrifying warnings of a nuclear holocaust the next.

The record begins with the ominous ambience of an empty wasteland, with the sound of a falling bomb, before the crash however the music begins with muted chords and the unforgettable chorus of “So long to the world, that’s what they said, it’s 1984 and it’s all gone dead”. Each song tears straight into the next, which unusual for early 1980s anarcho records, which often feature television and radio broadcasts between their songs, on this record, the Subhumans make their point just using their lyricism and fast paced punk rock music.

The highlights of the record are “Minority”, “Mickey Mouse Is Dead”, “Subvert City”, “No” and “No More Gigs”.

Minority makes an anxious attack on majority rules, angry that most of societies decisions are made to benefit the majority who don’t even understand the issue. This goes straight into the ‘’Dun dun dun dun’’ guitar intro to ‘’Mickey Mouse Is Dead’’ with Lucas’ angered chant tearing over the top, then the guitars thrash onwards at blistering speed, with lyrics concerning the tampering and over serious explanations of cartoons, this then builds up to the chant of “1 2 3 4 Look what you’ve done to Mickey Mouse” usually the tune of “We don’t want your ***ing war” this is an example of the way Subhumans were a bit too serious for most of the anarcho crowd.

“Subvert City” is the most obvious nod towards Orwell’s 1984 novel. ‘’Borrowing’’ its riff from The Vibrators ‘’Troops Of Tomorrow’’ it is a narrative tale of those who fight for liberty now, will control with fear in the future, set in the midst of a nuclear holocaust, ‘’Subvert City’’ remains one of Subhumans finest moments.

“No” begins with the ever memorable opening line of “No I don’t believe in Jesus Christ, cos my mother dies of cancer when I was five. No I don’t believe in religion, I was forced to go to church when I was five” the common punk rock subject of religion, getting a good hateful once over. The song doesn’t stop there though, continuing to disregard the police, fashion, the system and it’s media. Like a continuation of “Minority” this is written as a response to claims of “It’s not that bad” and “You’ll grow out of it”, something many punks believe they will NEVER do.

“No More Gigs” is the records ultimate statement; it’s a vicious attack on straight society. Long before bedroom recording became an aesthetic choice, R Stevie Moore built a legend of pop experimentalism, home recording, and mystic curmudgeonry. Equal parts songwriter, improviser, composer, producer, filmmaker, artist, and comedy writer, the self-taught Tennessean polymath has released hundreds of homemade albums since the '60s--and inspired a thousand times more. Rather than pose and slither in the music biz, Moore opted for a more genuine life and a spot on the staff at legendary indie radio station WFMU, sharing Bedroom Radio with the world. His independent streak extends to his record releases, the R. Stevie Moore Cassette Club successful and long-lasting enough that it became the R. Stevie Moore CD-R Club. By refusing to settle into any one genre or style, Moore has always dedicated himself to eccentric ideas and passions whether around the world or focused into his home. And as Moore now eases into a well-deserved retirement, ON EARTH stands as a powerful statement, an intimate companion, and a goofy guide through a storied career. Ranging all the way back to 1976's classic Phonography, the double-disc retrospective collects a full suite of dazzling power pop, psychedelia, and indie rock, and opens the gateway to the ultimate cult DIY hero.

VG/VG (Nice copy)

Some group from California going globe-trotting, offering songs from Serbia, Russia, Norway, Romania, Palestine, Brazil...swing, ragtime, Yiddish, Appalachian, Mexico, Ohio, "Orange Blossom Special," the "Charleston"! Whoa! 1982.

Formed in the northern industrial town of Stoke on Trent in 1977, Discharge changed punk with its distinctive brand of hardcore, making minimalist music with distorted guitar, drone-like bass, shouted anarchist themes and propulsive drumming, known as D-Beat.
