The Cleveland, OH-based trio of Bob Pfeifer on guitar vocals, Myrna Marcarian on piano/organ/vocals and drummer Ron Metz certainly created a unique sound, one that’s hard to pin down, even today. There’s an obvious love of the Velvet Underground but I also hear garage rock of the 60’s and some snarls of the punk scene that was just getting started. The way these three (with a rotating cast of bass players) blended all of these elements into this spell binding stew is, well, unique and spell binding. They set the tone from the get go with the incredible opener “(say no to) Saturday’s Girl’ and then rip right into the classic title track. The label's first release was the New Age Steppers' single for "Fade Away" (a brilliant, reverent remake of a Junior Byles song), which made a reappearance on the ad-hoc group's self-titled debut LP. Released in early 1981, New Age Steppers features contributions from well over a dozen post-punk and reggae scenesters and, like the following Action Battlefield, the record epitomizes the spirit of the exciting late-'70s/early-'80s crossbreeding that took place between punk and reggae. Central to this record, Style Scott of the Roots Radics and George Oban of Aswad provide most of the rhythms, and the originals were penned predominantly by Sherwood and Scott, with the occasional outside contribution factoring into the whole. The Pop Group's Mark Stewart pipes in with "Crazy Dreams and High Ideals," a winding, warping dub composition filled with random surges of snare drums, searing, trebly effects, and crazy vocal tricks -- Stewart seems to be yelping from the bottom of a well one moment, and then suddenly you'll feel as if you need to wipe his spittle off your ear. Ari Up's relaxed vocals highlight some of the album's most song-based material; both "Love Forever" and the aforementioned "Fade Away" feature galloping pianos and thick, rhythmic bases that Up merely sails along with. The remainder of the record is comprised of instrumentals that throw all sorts of manipulations and funhouse oddities into the mix. The best of the bunch is a dub of Viv Goldman's "Private Armies," which treats a melodica (?) so heavily that it resembles a violin. Solid songs, excellent playing, infectious, live off the floor, 2 track jamspace demos. They had to be heard. And now they can. Hosehead Records and Neon Taste Records in conjunction with the band are co-releasing Easy Money's demo LP with both singles for your listening pleasure and we guarantee you it is worth the price of admission.

FFO Pointed Sticks, The Heats, Cheap Trick and Kidda Band.

Clean, the – Boodle Boodle Boodle [white & black swirl vinyl 40th anniversary Peak edition w/ zine] – New 12"

2021 reissue of 1981 12" EP.

What can be said about The Clean? So began Obviously Five Believers, who in turn became The Subterranean Hawks, before settling on The Hawks. Adored by most who saw them, they recorded constantly, spawning one highly collectable single, ‘Words Of Hope’. They lasted from ’79 until Christmas ’81 “falling apart in a myriad of acrimony,” as Duffy wrote in 1984..Years passed with the various members each finding degrees of success: Duffy solo, and with the Lilac Time; Kusworth with Nikki Sudden and numerous other bands, often alongside current Black Bomber Twist. In 2019, when Duffy and Kusworth last met, Duffy, as custodian of The Hawks’ ‘tape archive’, promised that the recordings would one day be released. Sadly this was not soon enough for Kusworth who tragically passed away last year. Duffy has remained as good as his word, however, in bringing these ten songs to release, in honour of his friend. Having languished on cassette for 40 years, they’re now set free, sounding the best they’ve done since the day they were recorded, thanks to the judicious mastering of Grammy-winning engineer John Paterno. ‘Twas ever thus. They were the perfect group. While they didn't reach the same levels of acclaim as the Talking Heads, the Slits, or even more immediate peers like DNA or the Bush Tetras, the Dance created a hybrid of high-tension sounds on the same level as all of those bands that was evident from their first self-produced, self-released 12" EP, 1980's Dance for Your Dinner. Compilation release Do Dada collects that EP as well as alternate mixes of songs from later records, non-album tracks, and other unreleased material. The frenetic energy of the band's first four songs is almost uncontainable, from the eerie falsetto vocals and slippery bass line of "She Likes to Beat" to the caustic funk push, unexpected violin/percussion breakdown, and constant unhinged vocalizations of "Do Dada," a song emblematic of the anything-goes stylistic approach of the N.Y.C. scene the Dance were part of in the early '80s. There's an extended mix of the slick, slightly gothic groove "In Lust" (taken from the band's 1981 debut LP of the same name) as well as the dubby swells of non-album B-side "Dubbin' Down" and two versions of the previously unreleased "Into the Future," an emphatic and chaotic original mix and a sample-heavy mix by Arthur Baker that sounds almost unrecognizable from the first. The material on Do Dada draws from every phase of their brief lifespan and offers a great idea of how their sound changed and held on to its core elements as they burned quickly and ferociously.

It’s 1980 in Orange County, California, and PUNK ROCK has been scorching the ‘burbs for a few years. Eddie Joseph has been on the Southern California scene the entire time, plotting his poisonous rock’n’roll maneuvers since the mid 1960s when he began playing in garage bands. Eddie had been honing his skills on roots music and swinging teenbeat well in advance of his foray into a new, seedy, violent punk blitzkrieg. There’s a master plan at work here, and it involves select players depending on which direction Eddie needs to bleed out of his system. The recruitment of Mike Patton and Matt Simon of OC legends THE MIDDLE CLASS get Eddie and the Subtitles rolling for a slew of shows with comrades BLACK FLAG, ADOLESCENTS, CIRCLE JERKS and every other degenerate crew in the radius. A DIY imprint called No Label Records is formed (with literally NO LABELS on the vinyl!) and the first single “Fuck You Eddie!” is unleashed. Recorded in Fullerton by Jon St. James at his legendary Casbah studio (THE VANDALS, SOCIAL DISTORTION, BERLIN), these sessions also yielded a handful of tracks that would appear on the exceedingly rare “Skeletons In The Closet” LP (No Label Records, 1981). “Zombie Drug Killers,” “No Virgins In Hollywood,” and “American Society” appear here as the opening trio on this newly re-sequenced reissue.
EDDIE AND THE SUBTITLES "Skeletons In The Closet" LP by Eddie and the Subtitles
Geza X is also on board to produce a handful of tracks with peripheral Subtitles including Nicky Beat (GERMS, WEIRDOS) among the sessions’ players. The results here are another manifestation of Eddie’s one true love. Even as a punk allegiant, songwriting, sound and style are the priority. The dusted and dark goth-pop of “Magic” and “Stream of Consciousness” are crucial to the plot, setting a unique tone that works in a sea of one-dimensional scene releases, taking full advantage of Geza’s synth-mimicking microtonal guitar techniques. A tribute to Dave Dacron, chief miscreant of Dangerhouse Records’ RHINO 39 is also set to tape as consolation to X, as Dacron’s 16 year old life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident in 1980. But the party rocks on with covers of “Louie Louie” (also appearing on the elusive “Fuck You Eddie!” single) and “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” as a testament to Eddie’s obsession with the timeless now-sounds of his delinquent adolescence. Friends and fellow freaks Jon Blair (of surf cats Jon and the Nightriders) and Bobby Paine (later of rockabilly hepsters The Paine Brothers) lend their own song-smithery for four more originals: “Boppin’ Little Bobcat, ”“Treat me Right,” “Gina” (covered in 1984 by Josie Cotton and again in ‘89 by Stray Cats) and “Your Head’s In The Right Place,” respectively. “Skeletons In The Closet” remains an unusual and rare artifact in the ashtray world of punk, DIY and outsider music, and Slovenly Recordings is blasted to present it to the world one more time.

released July 1, 2022

Black vinyl.

First-time reissue of Slugfuckers' Transformational Salt, originally released on Dogfood Production System in 1981. This new album follows on from Soul Jazz Records' earlier highly successful 'Hustle: Disco Reggae' and features reggae covers of classic songs by Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, The Isley Brothers, Candi Staton, Curtis Mayfield and more as performed by Derrick Harriott, Devon Russell, Hortense Ellis, Glen Adams, Dave Barker and others. The lineages of American soul and disco music on the one hand and Jamaican reggae on the other are so intertwined that its unsurprising that disco reggae – or reggae disco if you prefer – is such a winning and straightforward combination. American and Jamaican music has been influencing each other back and forth for many decades, and is one reason that the music of Diana Ross, Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Brothers and numerous other US soul artists is so widely appreciated in Jamaica. // The most-straightforward definition of ‘Disco Reggae’ is to describe it as American disco and soul songs covered by reggae artists. But the relationship is binary – this is no mere subservient island appreciation of North American dominant culture but instead an example of the interweaving thread of Jamaican and American music that travels back and forth between the major cities of Kingston, London, Toronto, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. // Having said that all of the songs featured here are indeed cover versions of (or at least heavily based on) US soul and disco tunes. Curtis Mayfield, Diana Ross, Earth, Wind & Fire, Archie Bell, The Dramatics, Michael Jackson – the work of these artists resonated around the world and Jamaica was no exception. // This album is released as a one-off limited Sun Yellow coloured vinyl gatefold double LP edition + download, with full sleevenotes.

Hopi native Bruce Hamana recorded his psychedelic loner-folk classic Hamana almost entirely by himself. Here, she is joined by an all-star cadre of veterans, including saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Kenny Barron, and bassist Buster Williams. Also lending his warm support is her father, saxophonist Sonny Carrington, who jumps in at the end for a jovial take on Sonny Rollins' "Sonny Moon for Two." Although essentially her debut album, TLC & Friends was never widely available, recorded primarily as a showcase for the Medford, Massachusetts-born jazz prodigy, who was by then already a student at the Berklee College of Music. Most people would be introduced to Carrington either by her more commercial-leaning 1989 studio album, Real Life Story, or her much lauded work for artists like Wayne Shorter, Cassandra Wilson, and Mulgrew Miller, among others. Of course, by then she had developed into a highly adept crossover star, just as likely to lay down a clipped funk groove as a swinging cymbal rhythm. TLC & Friends takes you back to her nascent early days of blowing sessions when Carrington was clearly trying to prove her mettle against the hard bop jazz tradition. Of that she leaves no doubt, tearing into standards like "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "Seven Steps to Heaven" with the muscular ferocity of Art Blakey, her crackling cymbal pushing Coleman to ever throaty heights. Particularly exciting is her one original composition, the Latin-tinged "La Bonita," whose dusky, minor-key melody nicely evokes the noir-ish '70s post-bop of artists like Woody Shaw and Art Pepper. She also takes a joyously kinetic solo on another Sonny Rollins classic, "St. Thomas," revealing just how much of a percussion virtuoso she already was as a teenager."

"At the age of 5, she sat in with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the very first musician to let her stand on stage. Initially dubbed Nic Beery and The Zits, the group quickly shortened things to The Zits while rehearsing and playing a mix of basement parties, high school events, and community centers. Within a few months, The Zits had a solid repertoire of punk originals and covers, which included The Ramones and The Undertones (see track 5 for a great version of "Can't Get Over You"). Inspired by a classmate who had pressed a solo 45, The Zits pre-sold copies of their very own single, and booked time at Eastern Recording in Glen Burnie, Maryland to record their two strongest tracks. Produced by Scott Watson of regional new wave act The Intentions, the two tracks - "Sick on You" and "Beat Your Face" were quickly mixed and sent off to be released as a 45 on singer Nic Beery's own Olympic Records. Both tracks are total teen punk hits with great snotty vocals, crunchy guitar, keyboard, and some of the best dry heaves ever committed to tape! The Zits may have not had the sex or the drugs, but they certainly tackled the rock'n'roll better than most other class of 1981 bands can claim. We stayed with them on a houseboat on the Thames at Cheney Walk, Chelsea and their manager Rob Warr arranged for us to go in and record whilst they were out at a Madness/Specials gig in Camden.

"You" was supposed to be the first recording but it wasn't happening so we changed tack and recorded both songs in about 8 to 10 hours. We had only been together a few months and done about 3 or 4 gigs by this time. Rob took the tapes to EMI who were paying for the studio but they passed - no surprise there - so Rob went to Geoff Travis at Rough Trade. Geoff came to see us at The Global Village (later Heaven) and we met him afterwards and agreed to a deal on a handshake.

The single came out in December.

John Peel was given a pre-release copy and he decided to play it twice that night. The next day we got a call asking if we'd like to do a session for him - yes please!! Then, we were off and running.

"Delta 5" and "Make Up" included on this CD are from that session of February 1980. We recorded a follow-up, "Anticipation" / "You" in February 1980. We were gigging more often at this point and "You" turned out pretty well. More gigging in Europe and the UK; around 1980 - 81, we played quite a bit at The Lyceum in London and shared the bill with The Gang of Four a few times, Echo and the Bunnymen, B52s, Specials, Teardrop Explodes and U2 to name a few. We toured with The Gang of Four and Pere Ubu in 1980.

In September 1980 we did our second Peel session, which included "Triangle," which is included on this CD. Later in September 1980 we went to the USA.

We played New York and all along the East Coast. Then we went West, and "Shadow," "Circuit," and "Journey" are all from a show we did at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley, CA. Back to England in October and we recorded "Try"/ "Colour" with the Bad Manners horn section who we had met at a festival In Finland. In February 1981 we toured Holland and Belgium. In March 81 we signed with the Pre record label in April we went into Rak Studios in St John's Wood to record an album. Rak was Mickie Most's studios and The Animals, Hot Chocolate and Sweet had recorded there.

We experimented quite a bit on the album and perhaps we should have just recorded the songs as they were - the session versions included here are more a reflection of how we were live as they were all recorded quickly in one or two takes.

None of us really liked the title of the album but it was a compromise - I think we argued quite a lot back then. We did a UK tour culminating in a headline gig at The Venue London. We even had a horn section including Rico on trombone.

We went back to the USA for a few shows on the East Coast in May and came back to England in June. We recorded "Innocenti," "Train Song," "Final Scene" and "Singing The Praises" for a Richard Skinner session in July 1981.

The album came out somtime late in 1981 and we went to Holland in October - I decided it was time to leave when we got back - I think Julz and then Kelvin left and Bethan & Ros made one more single with new personnel before calling it a day in 1982.

The early days were the best and although we did argue a lot, (what band doesn't!), we also had a lot of laughs - for a couple of years we got to play live and make some records, and then that was enough.

Alan Delta 5

say no more...

Original Sufferhead begins with a minimal and otherworldly improv with a Fela’s new band, Egypt 80, before building up into a bold, intricately structured Afrobeat anthem decrying the situation of the masses in Nigeria. “Let’s sing a nice song together,” Fela suggests, as the chorus parallels the agile melody of his of sax. Formed by four young, teenage women in 1975; they started playing shows in 1976, in one of the toughest climates to get booked for bands playing original material. The Welders bonded over their love of The Monkees, The Beatles and early glam rock. The comedy of the National Lampoon Radio Hour and the Marx Brothers were just as big of an influence.

The Welders played several shows in the St. Louis metro area and eventually caught the attention of a local photographer and newspaper owner. He financed a recording session in 1979, with plans to release a four song EP. The newspaper folded before the release could happen, and all that survived was a cassette copy of the recordings.

The Welders continued for a couple more years after recording the EP. They had brief line up changes, and added an organ which shifted their sound more towards a '60s garage pop sound. They were ahead of their time again, pre-dating most of the neo-garage explosion of the '80s. By 1981, the band had moved on to other interests.

In 2010 BDR Records (a sub-label of Rerun, designated for St. Louis area artists) issued that previously unreleased EP. The EP was well received worldwide and has been sold out for several years. This new collection includes a newly remastered and improved version of the 1979 EP tracks, along with other studio, rehearsal and live recordings. The LP includes a large, six panel insert filled with amazing photos of the band. The first pressing has a limited number of 100 blue vinyl copies.
