While we may never know all we wish we knew about the man behind the music, we can finally complete the picture of his work. And what tunes they are. How Much Longer Must I Wait? Singles & Rarities 1965-1972 collects all of Lee Moses’ non-album singles and B-sides, plus three never-released tracks together for the first time ever. Most of the material here pre-dates 1971’s Time and Place, reflecting his initial bid for stardom via a series of now-legendary 45s recorded with Atlanta producer JOHNNY BRANTLEY. As for the unreleased recordings—much like the man himself, little is known about them. What remains is an oeuvre that has become synonymous with raw and emotionally charged Southern soul. His recordings in the late 1960s as well as his 1971 LP Time and Place, are highly regarded within the deep soul genre. Life and career Lee Moses was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended Booker T. They became a popular live act in the Atlanta area, and were at one time the house band at the Royal Peacock club.

Moses moved to New York City in the mid-1960s, where he worked as a session musician and recorded with Johnny Brantley, who co-wrote and produced his first single, "My Adorable One", in 1965. In 1966, he co-produced, with Johnny Brantley, several tracks by a virtually unknown Jimi Hendrix at Abtone Recording Studios in New York City. The tracks were later released as a 4-LP box set titled "The Genius of Jimi Hendrix". In 1967, he recorded three singles – all commercially unsuccessful – for the Musicor label, including "Bad Girl," and an instrumental version of The Four Tops' "Reach Out, I'll Be There". He also recorded a version of "Dark End of the Street", issued by Gates Records (probably in 1969). Moses' guitar style has been described as "funky" and likened to that of Jimi Hendrix, a contemporary of his on the club scene of the mid-1960s. He has also been praised for his "rough and powerful deep soul singing style". In 1970, Moses released a single, "Time and Place", on the Maple label, a subsidiary of All Platinum Records. This was followed by a nine-track LP of the same name - also produced by Brantley - that included his versions of several classic songs of the period including "Hey Joe" and "California Dreaming". The album featured several members of The Ohio Players, as well as Moses' own band, the Diciples (sic). Although the album has since been described as "a revered and highly sought-after lost treasure for deep soul fans and collectors," it was a commercial failure at the time. Moses also worked with fellow Atlanta native The Mighty Hannibal on his 1973 album, Truth. He returned to Atlanta in the early 1970s, and continued to perform locally, but did not record again. Skip started writing songs as a teenager building levees and roads, got to recording in 1931, a bad time for selling records with the country suffering from the Great Depression and of course black people of the South facing a mighty load of suffering before, during (and after)...those times might have reduced a huge percentage of the population down to a pair of stained overalls, but for folks like Skip those old overalls was nothing new, the pain coming through his music clear as an ambulance siren on a Sunday morning. If you listen to any haunting music today, or any form of blues, it might not have been directly influenced by Skip James, but it was very likely influenced by someone who was influenced by him. After finding no success with his 1931 recordings, James stopped recording and while sources give different accounts of his life, he worked various jobs and reportedly led the choir at a church and became a preacher. For the last five years of his life, he was rediscovered, found by John Fahey, Bill Barth, and Henry Vestine and bought to the attention of musicians around the world with new performances, reissues and new recordings. It’s easy to claim integrity when you come from privilege (and judge others who need money to rise out of poverty) but the integrity James showed during his rediscovery was inspirational. Because of this, his name might not have become as known as some, but musicians took notice and his rediscovery drastically and forever changed the face of American music. — winch

Artist Biography by Cub Koda

Among the earliest and most influential Delta bluesmen to record, Skip James was the best-known proponent of the so-called Bentonia school of blues players, a genre strain invested with as much fanciful scholarly "research" as any. Recruiting guitarists Johnny Echols and ex-Byrds roadie Bryan Maclean, bassist Ken Forssi and drummer Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer, Love began recording their eponymous debut LP in January 1966. Their first single, Bacharach/David composition "My Little Red Book," spotlights an insistent, menacing riff that sounds nothing like what their contemporaries were committing to vinyl. Other cuts highlight the writing talents of Lee and the band members, notably on Lee's anti-drug essay "Signed, D.C." and Maclean's "Softly to Me." Also included is their version of the rock standard "Hey Joe," rivaling The Leaves' hit version for power and sporting some lyric alterations. The group, which lived communally at the time in a house formerly owned by Boris Karloff (they are pictured in the house's garden on the LP cover), quickly coalesced into one of the West Coast's most influential and exciting groups; here is where it all began. Their "Hey Brother" LP, which had been recently released in America, gained the attention of promoters and music lovers alike. Within 16 days, the band performed seven concerts in small clubs such as the Maple Leaf Lounge in New Orleans and the Motor Bar in Detroit. In January 1985, the musicians assembled at the Detroit Masterpiece studio to record nine new songs for their fourth LP. There was a four week break before Kapingbdi were scheduled to tour Japan. Kojo Samuels, The Bandleader, flew back to Liberia, whilst the remaining musicians spent their spare time in the U.S.A. When Kojo returned from his travels, there were a few surprises in store. Firstly, four of the five Africans applied for Green Cards and were successful. This gained them the right to live permanently in America. Secondly, the fifth was involuntarily detained, having been arrested on drug trafficking charges. Thirdly, three of the four had married the next-best Americans in no time at all. The last was initially untraceable, but later appeared as an employee of a chicken wing stall. After nine years and three LP releases, the band came to a sudden end.

Subsequently, their tour of Japan and other concerts in Europe were canceled, as well as finalizing the work on Kapingbdi`s fourth album. Kojo rescued the 24-track tape from Detroit and took it to Germany, where it laid in his basement for decades. The breach of trust by his fellow musicians was too painful, which is why he tried to forget the recordings. Almost 35 years later, the "missing" fourth Kapingbdi album is finally released. Transferred directly from the master tape at Tonmeisterei in Oldenburg, then mixed and mastered at Audiomoto Studio in Berlin. To this day, it features the last recordings of the band. The cover photo, which was shot in Detroit, was to form part of the design for the original release of the fourth LP. "Take A Look Outside", as Kojo says today, has become Kapingbdi`s best album. (Ekkehart Fleischhammer, Sonorama Records 2019)

From a review of a Kapingbdi concert 1984 in Detroit/ U.S.A.: A loser during the recent Montreux-Detroit Festival was the Liberian band Kapingbdi. A plumbing mishap at the Book-Cadillac Hotel necessitated a round of mid-weekend room shuffling, leaving Kapingbdi the odd band out. But the sextet, which bills itself as “African Jazz-Rock from Liberia”, was back at the hotel`s Motor Bar last weekend. Word-of-mouth brought a sampling of the curious and the cognoscenti, and the response to Kapingbdi (ka-ping-gee) was enthusiastic. The group is scheduled to remain at the hotel this weekend and next, after which its plans are up in the air except for appearances at the Liberian pavillion of the New Orleans World`s Fair in mid-October. Kapingbdi`s music? Actually some Kapingbdi pieces are strictly African and played on acoustic instruments as traditional as a horn made from a hollowed elephant tusk. Most of the group`s music is a skilful mix of traditional and more contemporary African elements that should be hard to mistake with jazz, American pop and reggae. “It`s All Africa, in some of the ways we phrase the dynamics. It`s still a kind of root”, said Samuels, 40, who sings and plays several instruments with the group. The band began to gain a reputation in Europe in 1980, around the time of the violent military coup that toppled Liberia`s civil government. One of the group`s German albums came out then, and songs like “Why I can`t get no Pay” began to get airplay, That, according to Samuels, helped establish a new wave of original Liberian pop. “The mass started really asking for originality and started to enjoy what we were doing”, Samuels said. And it looks as if the same is about to happen in Detroit. (from the Detroit Free Press, September 13, 1984)

From a review of a Kapingbdi concert 1983 in Bonn/ Germany: “Kapingbdi” is a Mende word that means “born in the night”, and the seven members of the touring band do indeed play music that could be described as “coming from the night of the venerable continent.” For two hours, an overflow crowd at the “Kulturforum” in Bonn heard various combinations of bongo and conga drums, a jazzy saxophone, and several rhythm guitars. Bandleader Kojo Samuels sang in English. He spent several years in the Federal Republic of Germany, studying music in Cologne and Frankfurt. The current performance marked the fourth tour of the group in Germany since its founding in 1978. All the band members reside in Liberia. For them, music is not its own purpose but serves to carry a message, according to Samuels, a message born of the African experience and perspective though intended for all people. Though many of their pieces deal with African life, all of them convey the urgent, moral call for more human dignity, more humaneness, for more insight throughout the world. The Liberian musicians showed complete command of their instruments. Fast rhythms, constant changes in instruments, and a melodious diversity of tunes resulted in a blend of jazz, rock and reggae which swept the electrified Bonn crowd from their seats. Many young listeners even began to dance in front of the stage. The Performance climaxed when band leader Samuels picked up the elephant tusk horn to present Liberian Folk music with an accompaniment of drummers. It was as if the soul and power of African music were being unveiled in this fascinating serenade of drums and horns.
(from the Liberian “Daily Observer”, November 10, 1983)

Photo on frontcover: Kapingbdi in late 1984 in Detroit. In fact this is one of the life-changers for me. Just looking at it and, “woah, what's she sound like?” and those guys. Back then I would go to the post office and look in phone books and write down names. Just start calling people and calling people and calling people. I got nowhere with this one except back whenever like 20 years ago, or something. The place was still there, the Tan-Tar-A, the resort in the Ozarks in Missouri where they used to play. So, I was saying, "Can you ask around? Anybody remember these people?” And nobody's heard of them. It was a long time ago. But I did get brochures for vacations there in the mail, that's all I got. But this one, the song "Voodoo Doll,” in particular, when I heard it, that was what put it all together for me. At that time, I was still heavily into garage music. It had the garage thing. I was really into space music and sort of, science fiction-y aspects and the guitar is sort of freeform reverb noise and I was really into sexy female vocalists and having those three, and having a groove sort of beat going. Not a corny song where it's going to get blown, like you have a great verse then you have a cheesy chorus that comes in that's cheap not cheesy in the correct way to make the song work. That just had it.. half this album’s like that to me, and that song in particular stands out to me. And "Funnel Of Love" also appeals to the twilight zone sort of strange aspect, which was early on a heavy thing for me – getting that twilight zone feeling when I hear a record, like I got with Peter Grudzien. Where I feel like what I imagine drugs would have done for me if it’d worked, when I was a little kid wanting to run away to San Francisco or something. Something that just seems like it's from another dimension. When I hear it. it just puts me into this almost... is my hair going to prickle up? Am I making some sort of secret mysterious contact with some lost little scene that's going on? What was that scene like? Who were the people around it? You know, what were their friends like? What did they do? Or like, was it a David Lynch type weirdness or what? So, I had that sort of thing going on. The women also cover Marvin Gaye's 1969 "At Last (I Found Love)" and a funked up version of Tammy Wynette's 1969 "Stand By Your Man." Throughout the set, the understated guitar licks help carve out a greasy groove. Apparently, they only released two albums, but you'd find these women gracing so many albums in the 1970s with their gold-plated vocals.-- winch
<iframe width="560" height="315" Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music, and predated the teaching of such The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique was unrivaled until it entered the repertoires of metal virtuosos like Eddie Van Halen, and his wild showmanship made an enormous impression on the young Jimi Hendrix.
