Like all great bands around for more than an album or two, they're maturing and pioneering, effortlessly weaving in ideas from unlikely sources to color their songs in ways that seem strange at first, but then obvious upon reflection. This is immediately apparent from the moment the needle drops, moving brusquely between 60's British invasion-style psychedelia and twangy folk melancholy, to jangly barnstormers and songs of dark, bittersweet paranoia effortlessly and naturally. Along the album's path we are treated to brief forays into tragic 50's pop a la Del Shannon, Ennio Morricone on Mars instrumentals, nods to Roger Miller, and sugary, mind-warping harmonic Nuggets.

Having toured Australia, Europe, and North America and released a string of full lengths and EPs, GOODNIGHT LOVING are prolific without sacrificing quality and consistent without stagnating. Kenny Herzog wrote in CMJ that the band has "“incredible songs, smart lyrics, smart style and, above all, a sense of fun and ‘fuck it, let’s just play’ recklessness.” Those blessed with hearing The Goodnight Loving Supper Club will be introduced to the soundtrack of this season and beyond, hooked from opening melody to the last note's reverb, coming out of the melodic euphoria only to flip the record over. This is “summer on a porch, sipping beer at dusk” music of the highest order. The Goodnight Loving Supper Club was recorded by Justin Perkins at Howl Street Recordings and The Mystery Room in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and will be released on Dirtnap Records.

All copies with come postcard/download coupon.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/1427/products/Goodnight_Loving_The_-_The_Goodnight_Loving_Supper_Club.jpg?v=1570855594
autistic-youth-idle-minds-lp
Autistic Youth - Idle Minds - New LP

Autistic Youth: Idle Minds lp by Autistic Youth
Long awaited 2nd album from hardworking PDX youngsters, following up their classic "Landmine Beach" LP, as well as singles on Black Water, Rock Bottom, Taken By Surprise, and more.

Driving, melodic punk/hardcore (but NOT "melodic hardcore" if ya get the distinction) with dark, swirling undercurrents. DIRTNAP RECORDS. The Steve Adamyk Band are a bunch of obnoxious, rowdy, "kids" from Ottawa, Ontario. While the name would automatically draw comparison to a blues, jazz or rock band given the layout, make no mistake; the Steve Adamyk Band are a punk band. The SAB play trash-pop inspired by seventies punk, the skinny tie bands of the eighties and nineties garage rock. From the ashes of Million Dollar Marxists (Gearhead Records) and Sedatives (Deranged Records), the group was born out of necessity - a whack load of orphan songs with no band to call home. Frustrated playing in bands that would eventually call it quits, Adamyk formed a band that could have an endless timeline, even if the name is outside of the standard band name zone. Releasing two European singles before their first live performance, the SAB would go on to unload 4 seven inch singles and an LP in 2010. The self-titled LP in question sold out its initial pressing in three months and received rave reviews, including being hailed as Ben Weasel's favourite album of 2010. The following year, the SAB toured Europe, performed at SXSW and recorded their sophomore LP "Forever Won't Wait" to be unleashed by Portland, OR's Dirtnap Records closing in on the end of the year. More touring and releases are currently in the works for 2012, as it doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/1427/products/SAB72_6e298314-f40d-42f6-9830-0a260c6d5ed9.jpeg?v=1409862291
mean-jeans-on-mars-lp
Mean Jeans - On Mars - New LP

Mean Jeans - On Mars by Dirtnap Records
"Portland's premier party punks The Mean Jeans return with their long-awaited follow up to 2009's Are You Serious! The band played its first show in May of 2008, and originally featured Zach Byrne (Goodnight Loving) on guitar. The current lineup was cemented when Drew Fredrichsen (Leg Hounds, Jetty Boys) took over on guitar and backing vocals. The band released its debut single, "Beat Beat Beat" b/w "Crybaby", on Bachelor Records in 2009 and a year later issued its full-length debut Sweet Songs of the Sugar Stems on Bachelor and Dusty Medical Records. Those of us who'd been long awaiting an heir apparent to The Shivvers and Nikki and the Corvettes literally jumped for joy when we heard Sweet Songs, spending the subsequent months dancing in the streets and angrily rebuking local radio stations for failing to play "I Gotta Know". It was perfectly appropriate, then, that the title of the band's long-awaited sophomore album would be Can't Wait. Released at the tail end of 2012 by Screaming Apple Records (Germany) and Dream On Records (Japan), Can't Wait now gets an American release on Dirtnap. This terrific LP shows "growth" in all the best ways. Without abandoning its signature honeyed melodies and high-spirited candy pop style, the band has made a more mature and consistent album that's definitely its best to date. The production has been stepped up another notch, and every song sounds like a hit. If you missed the singles "Greatest Pretender" and "Like I Do", they're here in all their infectious glory. But it's the more melancholy tracks that really showcase Betsy Heibler's development into one of the finest songwriters working today. Songs like "Make Up Your Mind" and the gorgeous "Love You To Pieces" are steeped in the timeless traditions of Brill Building and British Invasion pop, yet feel entirely fresh in the year 2013. Produced by the Marked Men's Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke, Bras is a major departure from the '77 pop/punk feel of 2011's terrific Kings of the Weekend. This time the band brings a tougher, harder-edged sound and takes on a wider variety of musical styles. While still very much in the classic vein of Texan garage/punk, Bad Sports are also bringing to mind the heyday of New York City punk. With hints of Dead Boys snarl, Dictators thump, and even some artier Lou Reed/Television leanings, this record finds the trio refining its songwriting chops and rocking harder than ever. The album's got a little bit of everything - from booming Cheap Trick style power pop to straight-up catchy garage punk to grimy proto-punk not far removed from Orville's other band OBN IIIs. And while Bras builds on the foundation of previous records, quite frankly it blows away anything else the band has done to date. Scorching tracks like "Washed Up" and "Race To The Bottom" beg to be played at obnoxiously loud volumes, while "Nothing In This World" might be the best pop song you hear this year. Elsewhere, "Get You" and "Terrible Place" manage to satisfy the fan base even as they push the band's sound to the next level. Along with his bands Mike Rep & The Quotas & the seminal (Ohio) True Believers, he was also a a cohort in the 90's Columbus "supergroup" Ego Summit among a plethora of other Ohio band involvements. While some bands lose track of their own soul in forced attempts at progression, and others risk diminishing returns by simply treading the water of their earlier work, 2014 finds the Real Kids negotiating this path beautifully. Boasting both the raw energy and tough hooks of 1977 and the matured chops and expanded palette of frontman John Felice's “Nothing Pretty” LP, the dozen songs on this disc settle easily among the band's best work. Producer Rick Harte guides with an expert hand, integrating Hammond organ and pedal steel seamlessly into a full yet suitably unpolished whole, and the songs run the gamut from quieter but intense ballads like a definitive new “Common At Noon” and a sublime take on Jonathan Richman's “Fly Into The Mystery” to fast-paced rockers like “All Night Boppin'” (powered along by highly caffeinated barroom piano) and of course the instant classic title track, a high-energy gem anchored by the sort of classic Boston punk rock'n'roll riff that made this band's name. So, what to say about Shake…? It doesn’t suck! But is that really something to say, when the first thought that came to my mind was “this doesn’t suck?” Really, it’s reductive and oafish of me to write that, but I did think those thoughts. The recordings are good and warm, a much better mix than on the Down to You EP from 1999 (something about the drums on those recordings will always bother me). John Felice’s voice has held up pretty well. He was never a good “singer,” but that’s not the point. It’s just that sometimes I feel he’s reaching for notes he can’t hit. What Felice really is is a good songwriter: the man can write a hook, he’s got a signature guitar sound that any Real Kids fan can pick up on immediately, and he does the heart-on-sleeves thing but doesn’t make it feel cheesy. There’s an updated version of “Common at Noon,” slowed down and with extra instruments that improves on the original. How do you just keep writing great songs after all these years, straight from the gut, right from the heart. Mostly originals, a few covers from ‘66 - ‘67 (Elevators, Prunes, Satans), tons of moods and tempos, rocking and soulful, great as a grin from a girl on the corner, of course coming out of the 60s but never reeking of a stale museum, fresh as a breeze out the window of your old Mopar...the Kostelich/Kastelic/Kerr/Hohn/Hutchings connection, locked like a wrench on the rock and roll engine...humming like a slant six in a 1966 Barracuda...no wonder Fred Cole told me to listen to their records...I'd like to notch back the hands on the clock of time and put together a triple header with Reigning Sound, The Cynics and Dead Moon. Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones have been toiling away for eleven plus years in Kewaunee County (the entry way to Door County). The members of this band all have their hands full with life and devote time to their art when time permits. The scheduling of the time allotted for Hue Blanc’s Joyless Ones doesn’t impede them from making great original post modern garage rock (yes, I just made that genre up). Trust me the reason you might not be familiar with HBJO is because they are cleverly hidden behind the East Town Mall, excuse me in one of the most northern outposts of humanity in the great state of Wisconsin (I must remind everyone Wisconsin was on the winning side of the Civil War). HBJO fly the flag of ROCK without borders. I really believe at times their music takes over and they are all just around for the ride. Well at least for me that is how I feel every time I see them live. Never fails I go "Jebus Christ I forgot how great these guys are" and then I go into a trance mesmerized by their tribal forrest beat (not a reference to Mike Zink’s dad). The spirit animal of HBJO is Bigfoot and like Bigfoot these favorite sons of Algoma may be sighted rarely (and sometimes falsely) but always sighted with an impact. What kinda blood courses through the veins of this animal? That science knows nothing about. I will tell you it is the color of Pabst and it is full of The Cheater Slicks, Sonic Youth, Bauhaus, the Scientists, the Cramps, Mudhoney and yes even the Replacements. You argue with the Replacements? I submit to you the last track of “Stoning Josephine”, “Rock of Stability”. That's where I hear the Replacements.
