Critics were quick to take notice of the band's 2004 self-titled Dirtnap debut. Pitchfork proclaimed "this is no fishnet-hawking electroclash fashionista rock; besides having more sexxx appeal than both Coreys combined, The Girls've got chops like Ralph Macchio" while OC Weekly described the band as "Early-Cars meets Richard Hell and The Voidoids synthed-up garage punk that any fan of The Briefs, The Spits, or The Lost Sounds (R.I.P.) would gravitate to." Shannon Brown and guitar-slasher, Zache Davis, survived member changes to lead ?Griff? (bass/back up vox), Derek Mason (keyboard), and Elie Goral on drums into brief and concise displays of new-wave/punk excellence. THE GIRLS, who has at one time or another had members of the Briefs, Spits, Catheters, Steve E Nix And The Cute Lepers, delve even deeper into their well studied set of influences and have emerged with Yes No Yes No Yes No. These 10 twitchy new wave power pop gems continue THE GIRLS? worship at the feet of Richard Hell and The Voidoids, the Cars, Stiv Bators and Devo while venturing into the jagged pep pill-sped abstractions of Wire. The band again enlisted Martin Feveyear (Briefs, Epoxies) to press the buttons at Seattle?s Jupiter studios. From the quirky whirling synthes of ?Where Wolves Drink? and ?Who Are the Forgetters? to the rowdy punk-pop of ?Not I,? Yes No Yes No Yes No captures the energetic hooks and unique anxiousness of the band?s much-heralded live performance which has seen them share stages worldwide with the likes of Graham Coxon, the Black Lips, the Detroit Cobras and the Briefs.

NEW. Lower Berth is comprised of songwriting prowess backed by killer riffs, infectious melodies, an impervious rhythm section, and absolutely no filler and fluff. The final product is 13 tracks of stick-in-your-brain groove that varies from stomping anthem (e.g., "One Step Behind") to DANGERHOUSE or BUZZCOCKS-esque pop genius (e.g., "Buried Alive"). ИO///Sé mixes a wide array of disparate influences and creates something familiar but original. The scheduling of the time allotted for Hue Blanc’s Joyless Ones doesn’t impede them from making great original post modern garage rock (yes, I just made that genre up). Trust me the reason you might not be familiar with HBJO is because they are cleverly hidden behind the East Town Mall, excuse me in one of the most northern outposts of humanity in the great state of Wisconsin (I must remind everyone Wisconsin was on the winning side of the Civil War). HBJO fly the flag of ROCK without borders. I really believe at times their music takes over and they are all just around for the ride. Well at least for me that is how I feel every time I see them live. Never fails I go "Jebus Christ I forgot how great these guys are" and then I go into a trance mesmerized by their tribal forrest beat (not a reference to Mike Zink’s dad). Two LPs and a handful of 7 inch singles later, the band has come a long way but are still, at its core, a few friends having fun. 2017 sees the band set to release its third LP Good Night, Tomorrow. The record is a progression both musically and lyrically from their older material while still maintaining the hook-centric philosophy of their previous releases. The band has become legendary in Vancouver for wild shows and gruff but catchy punk rock melodies. It draws from classic punk roots like the wiry pop of The Buzzcocks and the gravely anthems of Stiff Little Fingers, but has a unique West Coast approach that would align itself with the catchiest of the Lookout! or Dirtnap Records catalog. Though none of the band’s songs overstay their welcome, you’ll find yourself humming one of their hooks days after seeing them play or hearing the record. Recorded with Jesse Gander (Japan-
droids, White Lung) in Vancouver at Rain City Recorders, the record shows an organic growth from the power pop of their previous two albums. Guitarist and singer Adam Solomonian’s voice is gruffer from playing hundreds of shows, and you can see a richer appreciation of the group’s influences such as Jawbreaker and the Replace-
ments at play in the song writing. Tony Dubroy’s solid bass lines and Macey Budgell’s heavy drumming combine to form a powerful rhythm section that perfectly complement Solomonian’s simplistic-but-pointed guitar playing. Everything from the Sonics, 13th Floor Elevators, The Rats, The Wipers, Devo, Black Sabbath, Big Boys, Zero Boys, Pagans, The Avengers, Wire, Plasmatics, Butthole Surfers, Minutemen, Rezillos, 60's girl groups, 50's rockers, on and on and on. But there is something more than that, too. Their tuneful hooks take hold of you, drag you deep into their bleak and feral songs and threaten to tear you apart once you’ve been captured. Their music is simultaneously melancholic, frantic, and joyfully danceable. It’s wild and new and something wholly of its own. The energetic melodies that blast through ALLVARET’s new album are simply mind-blowing. This Swedish punk band 2nd album may just be one of the best things that have ever been produced in the history of Swedish melodic punk rock. The anthemic vocals of Sushila are the perfect balance of aggression and sincerity, while the predominantly choppy guitar chords and the drumbeats keep up the motivating energy that drives their music. The ten short and catchy songs that make up this album are simple yet powerful, and the beginning of each new track jolts the listener back into their music. At first, the inability to understand their lyrics may seem jarring to the foreign listener. However, after listening to the entire album a few times, I forgot they were even singing in Swedish! The surf-rocky guitars and snappy punk drumming release sustaining energy, while the passionate tone of the harmonized male-female vocals, at times angry and at times melancholic, create the perfect blend of hooks that will grab you and lead you into a place set up by this musical phenomenon. To End All Worth, the band’s debut album, is the culmination of years of basement-forged craftsmanship, when few were listening but the rats in the walls. The hard work the band put in hammering out these songs has manifested in a record that is beautiful and lasting, as sure of itself in its instrumentals as it is neurotically self-critical in its lyrics. This is a style of melodic punk rarely played anymore—raw, imperfect, threadbare, dizzying, sincere—passed over in favor of the fest-ready, social-media savvy, astroturfed pseudo-grunge that passes for “indie punk” these days. The politics on To End All Worth are deeply rooted in interconnected, intersectional experiences, and grapple with the personal pain of gender issues, race, class, and family— but you wouldn’t know it if you weren’t paying attention. The band churns out unapologetic outsider anthems in the tradition of CRASS records bands, with flashes of the angular iconoclastic wit of Flux of Pink Indians or Poison Girls juxtaposed against the jarring and heavy guitar textures of Profane Existence style crust punk. It’s the appropriate tone for Pandemix’s incisive social commentary. On the album closer “Column of Light,” they offer a thesis: “May every breath I ever draw be used in condemnation.” Vocalist Shannon Thompson's breath finds well deserved targets at nearly every lyrical turn.
